Chapter 23 Have You Always Been This Popular?
Chapter 23 Have You Always Been This Popular?
Since Everly had just returned home, she had nothing much to deal with.
In the afternoon, she went to the Lamont Group with Maverick.
She hadn't got a Chinese driver's license, so it was Maverick who drove.
After arriving at The Lamont Group, she got much work handed over to her, and Maverick was also
very busy. Therefore, they didn't bicker like they did at LAL anymore.
Everly was very persistent in her work.
Moreover, she had boasted that she would never resign, so she would delve into the real work. It could
not be denied that actually she got a promotion. The Lamont Group provided good benefits.
As she thought about that, she felt more comforted.
In the whole afternoon, Jayden was busy with the handover. Thinking of her son, Everly wanted to say
something, but on second thought, she felt it pointless.
Actually, she did not have a good impression of Maverick, nor did she have a good impression of his
assistant. Work was just work. Otherwise, people would mistake her for a woman interested in
Maverick.
It was the first day of Edmond in kindergarten. In the morning, she asked Hendrix to send Edmond to
school because she needed to go to work.
Everly guessed that she wouldn't be able to pick Edmond up in the afternoon either. His classes must
have been over after she got off work.
Therefore, she contacted Hendrix and asked him to send a chauffeur to pick Edmond up.
Hendrix agreed.
Everly checked the time. At about 4:30 pm, Maverick called her and told her to be prepared for a dinner
with him in the evening.
It should be a bona fide secretarial duty this time.
Everly had no choice but to agree. She called Gloria and told her that she couldn't go home for dinner
because she needed to go to a dinner party with her boss.
Everly hadn't told Hendrix that she had become Maverick's secretary.

On the way to the dinner party, Everly and Maverick sat in the same car.
Along the way, Maverick was busy with his work and seemed to have no time to talk to her.
Everly wanted to ask him what kind of dinner party they were going to.
But he was so busy, so she asked nothing.
There was a frigid atmosphere in the car. Everly felt that working with a cold man like Maverick steeled
herself to some extent.
After half an hour's journey, the sky had already darkened by the time they arrived at the restaurant.
Everly got off the car with Maverick. The phone in her hand suddenly rang. She picked it up and found
it was an overseas call from Jack.
Everly had to answer the phone, "Jack?" She subconsciously slowed down. Jack was very busy and it
must have something to do with Edmond, so she must answer the phone.
Maverick heard her talk with someone in fluent English on the phone. NôvelDrama.Org holds text © rights.
He couldn't hear the other side. But he heard Everly say in English, "That's great. I've got a job. I'll visit
you once I have time. Thank you very much for what you've done all these years."
Then she said, "What? Really? Are you visiting China? Isn't it inconvenient for you?"
Evidently, Everly had heard something pleasant. She smiled brightly with her eyebrows curved and her
dimples showing.
Maverick stood in front of the elevator while Everly was chatting on the phone.
He looked at the smiling face reflected on the elevator door.
She had never smiled at him like this.
Suddenly, he felt annoyed.
Everly could clearly feel Maverick's discontent. She suddenly realized that she was still at work and
shouldn't make personal calls. So she immediately lowered her voice and said, "Great. See you then. I
will show you around. Well, I'm busy now. I gotta go. Bye-bye."
...
She put away her phone and the elevator door opened.
With a gloomy face, Maverick walked into the elevator silently. Everly hurriedly followed him in.
The door of the elevator closed. Everly hesitated for a moment and finally asked, "Mr. Maverick, what
kind of dinner party are we going to?"
Maverick raised his hand to buckle the cufflink.
But it seemed that he had failed. He directly raised his hand in front of Everly.
Everly was puzzled.
Maverick looked at her and said coldly in a commanding tone, "Button it up."
Surprised though, after hesitating for a moment, she reached out her hands to button the cufflink up for
him.
In fact, during her years of career, she had never done anything like this for a male boss.
To button the cufflink, she subconsciously tilted towards Maverick. The elevator was so small that she
could feel clearly his smell of masculinity.
It smelled like sea salt with a very special fragrance of tea.
She was not sure.
She could not tell what exactly it was. It reminded her of something hidden deeper in her memories.
But she couldn't remember it clearly. So she held the button between her fingers in a trance.
Maverick said in a low voice, "What are you doing? Is it difficult for you to button a cufflink?"
Everly regained her senses at once and buttoned the cufflink quickly. She raised her head, only to find
that they were standing very close.
In great shock, she looked into Maverick's dark and deep eyes.
And she could feel that smell even more clearly.
With embarrassment, she tried to step backward.
Unfortunately, however, she sprained her ankle.
'It really wasn't a good start.' Everly thought.
But a big hand supported her waist immediately.
She didn't fall down as expected, while she got closer to that cold face.
Maverick's face was very close to hers as his eyes narrowed and said in a low voice, "You're popular
among men. Is this your secret?"
...
Regardless of the pain in her ankle, Everly hurriedly steadied herself and retreated.
"I don't know what you mean. Anyway, I don't have any other intentions." She felt there were always
implications -- sarcasm, in most cases -- in Maverick's words.
She didn't know why he was so mean.
They had already agreed to let it go!
Why was he still lingering on that?
He always sneered at her by saying that she couldn't live without a man.
Damn!
She kept cursing in her heart.
Maverick looked down at Everly who seemed obedient. Actually, he knew she was rolling her eyes at
his shoes.
As Everly lowered her head, he could see her fair skin on the back of her neck.
Maverick breathed faster.
Nothing special had happened, but his heart softened for no reason.
He suddenly approached her and pushed her against the wall of the elevator. She raised her head in
panic and heard his low and hoarse voice, "Don't you understand what I mean?"
