Branch One Hundred and Thirty
“Change I need to change?” Xavier asked as he followed Jessica.
“Yes,” she answered wearily like it was a child she was fed up with.Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org exclusive © material.
“Why? Don’t I look nice in what I am wearing?” she thought he sounded like a girl who was told to change what she was wearing and had serious esteem problems.
“Well, Dawson got you a birthday suit and I am guessing it would be beautiful if you wore it”
“Are you going to dress me?” he asked as she pushed the door to the closet open.
Jessica felt flustered at his question. “Why would you ask that,” she said clearing her throat.
“Because you brought me here and now you are going into the closet”
“The only reason I came with you is because I know where the suit is. I had to hide it away from you so you don’t get an idea of the party” she screamed from inside and then merged with the suit in hand.
“Here I think it would look nice on you. Change into it I will be waiting outside” She shoved the suit on the dress hanger into his hand and made her way out of the room.
“You can take a quick shower too” She popped her head through the door. “You are the birthday boy so I’m guessing everyone would wait”
Xavier nodded. He felt grateful for her suggestion. He did feel sticky and wearing the clothes without cleaning up would make him feel weird. He entered the shower and began to think of everything.
He had never been one to celebrate his birthday. He had never done it before. The last birthday with his parents he recalled they were out of the city and then died shortly after. He always hated this time of the year because celebrating his birthday made him feel sad.
However, there was something about the way Jessica stood across from him with flowers in her hand and a huge smile across her face. There was no way he would deny that she looked beautiful but that was not it.
Something about the way she said happy birthday to him made him want to have an actual happy birthday. He knew himself too well and was shocked he did not throw a fit at the surprise.
He even saw the shock on his grandfather’s face when he accepted the flowers without complaints. He came out and did his usual routine before putting on the suit gotten for him.
“I am not a kid” he murmured as he admired himself in the mirror. He was good looking and he knew it. “But the suit is nice” he added.
“You are taking a long time,” Jessica said from the other side of the door.
“I thought I could take all the time I want since it’s my birthday?” he asked referring to what he had said earlier.
“I only said that to sound nice”
“What do you think?” he asked as he opened the door.
She blinked multiple times as she swallowed hard. She saw a halo shine at the back of his head and no it was not an illusion. She was sure she saw it.
“Black suits do the trick don’t they?” she cleared her throat and diverted her eyes from him.
“I guess you look okay”
After Jessica had awkwardly complimented Xavier on the suit that Dawson gave him she decided to give him her gift before they headed downstairs. The hardest part about the whole week was choosing a gift for him.
She barely knew him so she did not know what to get him. What compounded the situation was that he was a billionaire so she had a hard time picking up what he could not have.
“So your gift,” she said moving to the vanity table. She sat down and pulled open the drawer. “I did not know what to get you because I am not aware of your preferences and also you are rich so there is nothing I can get for you that would be worthwhile”
“Hmm?” he asked confused.
The only gifts he ever received were the ones his grandfather got him. He had always sternly warned Jason and Brian against giving him anything.
“So I git you this watch. It’s nothing expensive because I paid for it with my own card” she said standing up to face him while opening the box.
“You bought me a gift?” he asked in awe.
He hated the birthday gifting ritual but he loved her standing there telling him he got a gift from her for just being born.
“Yeah, it’s your birthday. It is nothing expens….”
“I don’t care,” he said cutting her off as he snatched the box from her.
“Oh,” she said surprised at his actions.
“Ermm,” he said clearing his throat. He was grateful for the gift but he had never received one before so he did not know how to say thank you. He wanted to but he was finding it difficult.
“What I want to say is”
“What you want to say is thanks? Well, you’re welcome” Jessica said.
“How did you know?” he asked taking a step back.
“Because gratitude is written all over your face” she teased. She saw him turn red and how a quick clearing of the throat restored him to his original color.
“Let’s not keep the goes waiting,” Jessica said as she walked to the door. Xavier pulled the watch out of the box and then put it on. He turned around and followed her.
Jessica had prepared an intimate dinner party where they all sat down and ate all evening. The people who were there were Dawson who of course was the idea box behind the party itself, Genevieve who had been of great help, Olivia who nagged about how Jessica was making a nice mistake, Alicia and Leslie who had been great help alongside their partners Jason and Burke.
Jessica had been the one to make the exotic meal displayed on the table. As they sat to eat, small talk, laughter, and gratitude flew around.
“Great job with the party, even with all this money I am very sure I can’t throw something this beautiful” Dawson said out loud with the agreement of the rest of the people.
“You flatter me too much”
