Branch One Hundred and Twenty Eight
“Aren’t you going to stay for breakfast?” Jessica asked as she watched Xavier hurry down.
True to her word she had taken the week off and now she did not need to rush to the restaurant early and she resumed her duties of breakfast making.
“Jason showed up in the city all of a sudden for an important deal and I had no idea until this morning. I need to go see him” he explained.
“Oh okay don’t let me keep you waiting then,” she told him urging him to go.
“Don’t make dinner for me tonight. I don’t think I’ll be coming home for a while. I’ll need to settle him before I can sleep in peace again”
Jessica nodded. She knew about Jason coming into town. She has asked Alicia to help her out with that. She planned to get him out of the house. Although he said he had a full schedule that week he was home almost all the time and she needed him out so she could do her work in preparation for the surprise party.
Alicia had suggested that making her boyfriend come over to keep him occupied might be a good idea. Xavier values all his business relationships and everyone knows it quite well.
“Bye,” she shouted after him as he left. A grin appeared on her face. It was the day of his birthday and she hoped that whatever tactics Jason was going to use would be effective. She needed to have people going in and out of the house setting up the courtyard ready for use.
Jason had promised Jessica that he would do his best to ensure he did not come home. In his exact words, “He had been doing that for years”
“You are doing a great job with the party” Jessica heard Dawson’s voice from behind her.
Dawson had been quiet of late even when Jessica tried to make him talk. He went to bed earlier than usual and slept longer hours. He looked tired even though he had good sleep.
Jessica began to blame herself. Maybe the house was stressing him a bit too much. Maybe he should have left him at the hospital. She brought him home and she could not pay enough attention to him. She thought it might be right for her to let him return to the hospital but she did not know the best way to bring it up to him.
“You gave the task to me I have to do it well,” she said coughing beside his chair. “Dawson, are you fine? Do I need to call the doctor?” she asked concern overtaking her face.
“An old man like me is never a hundred percent healthy,” he said a cough following. “It’s normal for our people to be this way”
His voice sounded like he was trying to convince her so badly that he was fine. She did not want to push the topic because she was unaware of how sensitive he might be to the issue but she knew it deep in her guts that he was definitely not fine.
“I’ll bring you a big bowl of beef soup,” she said standing up with the apron rope falling to her sides.
“Don’t you bother, I don’t have much of an appetite these days so don’t bother”
“Which is more reasons you have to have this soup. Just have a little please” she said mustering the cutest fact she could have.
“I give in” he coughed and ended his statement with a laugh.
“Thank goodness” she muttered as she walked away.
“How is keeping Xavier away from the house going?” Alicia asked over the phone.
“It’s harder than I thought, he is always into stuff like balancing the account and making everything prim and proper but for some reason today he has been complaining so much about the meeting” Jason complained.
He had told Xavier to take a break when he complained so much during the meeting. Xavier had worn his ears off with so many complaints that Brian and Jason could not handle anymore.
“That’s why I called. What else do you think we can do to keep him here?”
“What if I come over to pitch a business? I have been trying to do so for a long while now anyways why not now?” Alicia asked.
She had been trying to expand her family business so why not now? Jason could use her friendship to take her in and she could use her pitch to keep him there.
“How do you intend to get into this place? You don’t have an appointment with him do you?”
To Alicia, it sounded like he was flirting heavily and she was not in the mood for that. She just wanted to help her friend out.
“I was hoping you could help me out”Còntens bel0ngs to Nô(v)elDr/a/ma.Org
“Me?”
“Yes you,” Alicia said after a long silence.
“And how do you intend I do that?”
“Isn’t he your friend? I expect you to use that influence to get me in” she said in a voice that what she said was supposed to be the obvious thing for him to do.
“I mean I can talk to him but that doesn’t guarantee him agreeing to the situation” Jason explained.
“Whatever you do we have to keep him there until Jessica is done and ready. What kind of surprise would it be if he found out before we could do anything?” she asked in a tone that was slightly offensive because it sounded like she was talking to a child.
“I know what you mean but don’t you think your tone is a bit off?” Jason asked.
“Oh, I’m sorry about that. I’m sorry I’m trying to help my friend”
“Alicia, Baby I don’t want us to fight about some other people who might or might not be our friends. And even if they are who cares? We should worry about ourselves” he said in one breath.
“And no I’m not saying I won’t help out. I’m just saying Xavier might not be open to the idea so we should have a plan B, C, and if possible a Plan Z too”
Alicia felt he was telling the truth but what could she do? There was no way she would admit she was wrong to snap at him while accusing him of not wanting to help out.
“Let’s try that first. Who knows it might be our lucky day”
Jason nodded to himself as his eyes closed. He was startled back to reality by a slamming of paper in front of him.
“Shall we get back to work then?”
“I have to go now. I’ll call you later”
“Bye Jason”
