Chapter 931
Chapter 931
Franklin could tell that Sylvia thought Cristal was a nice person, so she was being quite friendly towards her. He didn't hesitate to give the two invited guests a chance.
The two were flattered and immediately expressed their gratitude. "You're pregnant, so you might not be able to eat anything too rich or heavy. Would you like some mushrooms?" Sylvia offered the grilled mushrooms to Cristal. "Can you eat these?"
Cristal took them excitedly, her eyes sparkling with joy. She couldn't believe she was actually eating vegetables grilled by Miss Andrews herself... she felt almost faint with happiness.
Suddenly, a cell phone rang and Sylvia glanced at Franklin before he walked over to take over flipping the food on the grill in perfect marital harmony while Sylvia went aside to answer the phone.
"Samuel? What's going on? What happened?"
"You mean... a difficult patient? Didn't Ms. Wolfe take care of it? Why do I have to go?"
"Don't you trust her? It's her patient; I have no reason to steal it back."
After listening carefully as Samuel explained everything in detail, Sylvia found it somewhat ridiculous. "She never said she gave up on this patient; why should I go back there now? And besides, if Alondra took over then, that means she can handle it just fine! Don't worry too much."
At this point, she had no idea who this patient was nor did she care much about what had happened.
After hanging up the phone call, Sylvia returned back to grilling with Franklin who had already finished several skewers of lamb and beef which he seasoned with cumin and chili powder.
As they cooked together, they heard familiar brakes screeching before seeing Mollie and Clare get out of their car, carrying bags filled with fruits and drinks.
"Let's refresh everyone," Clare said as they opened up their bag revealing fruits and beverages which were quickly distributed among everyone present at the gathering.
"My uncle really thinks ahead," laughed Sylvia but before anyone could say another word, Samuel called again for what seemed like an unending conversation about his medical emergency that needed attention right away!
"Samuel, I really can't come!"
"Boss, I'm begging you. Alondra really can't do it. What if the person dies on the operating table? Boss, how about this..."
After listening to Samuel's plan, Sylvia said helplessly, "Why are you so persistent? It's just a patient. And not even my patient. What's the difference between what I'm doing and being a masochist?"
"Boss, that's not how it is! Saving a life is meaningful. If Alondra succeeds in saving him, I won't take three months' salary! And if she doesn't succeed, then you can come in and save the day." Samuel was eager to see Sylvia run over and slap Alondra in the face.
He worked with Sylvia on medical forums where he earned much higher wages than he would at a hospital.
He even offered to go without pay for three months.
He didn't believe that his sincerity wouldn't move her.
However...
All he got was Sylvia's firm refusal. "I'm not going."
After hanging up the phone, she looked up to find everyone staring at her; she had become the center of attention.
Franklin looked at her with deep eyes and asked. "What happened?"
Sylvia hesitated for a moment before telling them what had happened.
"I don't want to go." This material belongs to NôvelDrama.Org.
"If you don't want to go, then don't go; it's not your patient," Franklin thought that there was no need for Sylvia to play saint because even if she did others might not appreciate it anyway.
Mollie thought about it and said. "But... what if Ms. Wolfe really does kill that patient? What will happen then? Will you regret your decision?"
She closed her lips tightly after speaking feeling embarrassed by what she said. "Miss Andrews, please don't blame me for being nosy... I didn't mean anything else."
"Sylvia," looking at Mollie's shy face," You make sense too; I'll consider this matter."
Samuel suggested that Sylvia first goes Urgford Hospital where his office is located while waiting for Alondra who may or may not be able handle things herself. If Alondra could handle things herself, then fine, but if she couldn't, then let Sylvia come as their savior instead.
Sylvia found no interest in this plan as she never wanted nor needed any competition against anyone including Alondra.
But saving live, she gazed up into sky, thinking how blue it truly was!
Early the next morning, Alondra arranged for Donovan's surgery and began preparing for it. She also called in her student Sabrina to assist.
Sabrina was thrilled at this rare learning opportunity.
At 9 o'clock in the morning, Alondra entered the operating room with several doctors and nurses. "This surgery is very important, and everyone knows how critical the patient's condition is. We must be fully focused and ensure that we succeed. Otherwise..."
Alondra's serious and cold gaze swept over everyone wearing masks.
Samuel was among the crowd, thinking that Alondra was just being dramatic.
But he didn't say anything.
Donovan was pushed into the operating room and lifted onto the surgical table. First, all of his hair was shaved off, then he was given anesthesia.
After receiving anesthesia came a difficult waiting period.
When it was time, Alondra finally picked up her surgical knife.
As time ticked by slowly but surely, Alondra's face became increasingly grimace-like.
Her hand holding the surgical knife began to tremble with difficulty - how could this be?
Looking at blood gushing from Donovan's wound left her mind blank - she had not made any mistakes during surgery; why did this happen?
"Ms. Wolfe! The patient's heartbeat has stopped without warning!"
"Ms. Wolfe! The patient's blood pressure has suddenly dropped!"
"Ms. Wolfe..."
The urgent voices around her were overwhelming; they made Alondra feel like her head would explode from all of it!
She gasped for breath before shouting out urgently. "Emergency measures needed – adrenaline injection – quickly!"
"Defibrillator!"
"Hurry!"
"We must save him!"
If this operation failed... her career would end here!
No... she couldn't let that happen!
She continued to shout. "Hurry up! We must save him no matter what!"
The atmosphere inside of the operating room became extremely tense as everyone panicked except Samuel who walked out of there straight away removing his gloves on his way out while looking through a cabinet where he found his phone to call Sylvia immediately saying. "Mrs. Maskelyne... the worst happened... I know you didn't agree yesterday... but I'm afraid we might lose him." He felt both frustrated yet regretful about what had happened since doctors are supposed to have compassion towards their patients after all...
Just as Samuel's chest started hurting due to frustration, Sylvia's clear voice came through on his phone saying. "I'm right outside of hospital entrance."
Samuel paused briefly before asking incredulously. "What did you say? I thought you couldn't come?"
"Did he hear me correctly?" Sylvia asked before hanging up the phone.
Samuel was so excited that he quickly removed his sterile gown and rushed out of the operating room. Outside, almost everyone in the Ritter family was gathered at the door. They suddenly saw a doctor rushing out and surrounded him like they had seen a savior.
"How is my husband? How did the surgery go?" Mrs. Ritter asked anxiously.
"Has Ms. Wolfe finished her surgery?"
Mrs. Ritter quickly grabbed Samuel's arm and said, "Why did you come out?"
She was anxious but could only wait outside.
"The surgery had some problems; his heart stopped beating," Samuel replied impatiently, "I'm finding an expert to save your husband!"
Mrs. Ritter's head buzzed loudly as she screamed, "What did you say?"
The rest of the Ritter family were also shocked, "How could there be any problems? Isn't Ms. Wolfe the best doctor?"
Ashlyn burst into tears and almost fainted as she cried out, "Dad! Dad! Is my dad going to die?"
Samuel sneered and said, "Ms. Wolfe has been torturing him for too long; if you don't let go now, then it really will be too late."
He broke free from Mrs. Ritter's grip and ran towards the elevator.
As soon as he pressed open button on elevator door, Sylvia walked out from inside.
The beautiful woman with clear pupils made Samuel immediately grin widely with happiness. "You're getting old; your movements are so slow," Sylvia said without speaking first.
"I'm nearly fifty years old!" He followed behind Sylvia like a puppy dog wagging its tail happily. "Miss Andrews, you should change clothes quickly and get back into surgery. The patient's heartbeat has stopped; if we wait any longer, it might not be possible to save him."
Sylvia didn't say anything but walked towards the operating room. When she saw all of the Ritters gathered around outside, she paused for a moment. Mrs. Ritter also saw her, and became even more angry, "What are you doing here?"
She looked at Samuel again who nodded obsequiously.
She became even sharper in tone, "Are you referring to her as an expert? I disagree! She must have come here to harm my husband! I don't want her!"
"If I knew that Mr. Ritter was being saved, I wouldn't have come either."
Sylvia didn't expect things would turn out this way. It really is true that coincidence makes great stories.
Speaking while opening up doors leading into operation room from inside, the situation turned tense once again...
Alondra emerged with a defeated expression on her face, looking somewhat numb. Despite all the efforts to save him, there was still no sign of Donovan's heartbeat returning, and she had to declare him gone. Every method had been exhausted, but they couldn't bring Donovan back.
"Ms. Wolfe, is the surgery over? How is my husband doing?" Mrs. Ritter asked urgently. Alondra was the best and could surely cure him!
Alondra shook her head blankly.
"What does that mean? Is he okay or not?" Mrs. Ritter stared at her anxiously.
