“You know, I’ve been eagerly waiting for this moment,” Alexander whispered, his lips grazing the tender skin of her neck, sending shivers down her spine.
Sophia chuckled softly, her eyes sparkling with affection. “I remember when I saw that interview with you in London, talking about making me your wife again. I think I woke up the whole neighborhood with my screams of excitement.”
Alexander’s laughter mingled with hers, the sound echoing through the room. “I couldn’t have asked for a better reaction, love.”
As they savored the moment together, Alexander’s expression turned thoughtful. “There’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you.”
Sophia tilted her head, her curiosity piqued. “What is it?”
“It’s wonderful to see our friends and my mom here, but I realized I haven’t had the chance to meet your mom yet.”
A pang of emotion flickered across Sophia’s features as she considered his words. “You’re right. It’s about time I introduce you to her. I also need to talk to her about some things, about my father…”
“We can plan a trip for tomorrow. Where does she live?” Alexander inquired gently, his concern evident in his voice.
“In Minnesota,” Sophia replied softly. After my father’s passing, she withdrew from everything. It was hard for her to move on, they were deeply in love. She decided to start anew, away from everything that reminded her of him.”
Understanding dawned in Alexander’s eyes as he listened to Sophia’s explanation. “I understand. Tell me more about your mom,” Alexander urged gently.
Sophia’s smile softened with fondness as she spoke. “My mom is a strong woman, Alex. She’s been through a lot, especially after my dad passed away. But despite everything, she’s managed to stay resilient.”
Alexander nodded, his admiration for Sophia’s mother evident. “She sounds like an incredible person. I can’t wait to meet her.”
Sophia’s gaze softened, a hint of vulnerability shining through. “I think she’ll really like you, Alex. You have a way of making people feel at ease.”
“I hope so,” Alexander replied, his voice filled with warmth. “I want her to know how much you mean to me, and how much I value your family.”
“Would the great Alexander Stone be anxious to meet my mother?'”
Alexander chuckled at Sophia’s playful remark, his eyes sparkling with amusement.
“You bet,” he replied, his tone light yet sincere. “Meeting your mother is important to me, Sophia. She’s a part of you, and getting to know her better will help me understand you even more.
Sophia’s smile widened at his words, touched by his earnestness. “Well, get ready then. My mom can be quite the character, but I have a feeling she’ll adore you.”
“I’ll make sure to bring my A-game,” Alexander said with a grin, pulling her closer. “But for now, let’s enjoy this moment together. Our engagement party is just getting started, and I intend to make every moment with you unforgettable.”
“God, I lived. I lived to see you finally together and engaged,” Caroline’s voice interrupted them.
Sophia laughed and hugged her future mother-in-law tightly.
“To think you both are just impossible. How long have I been trying to get you two together?”
“Well, you did it,” Sophia replied with a smile, her eyes shining with happiness.
“Don’t think it was easy for me. Both of you are terribly stubborn,” Caroline chuckled.
“The important thing is that it worked out in the end.”
“I wish you much happiness and luck. I think everything you went through showed you what a good team you are,” Caroline said warmly, her eyes filled with affection for the couple.
As the evening progressed, the party continued in full swing, filled with laughter, music, and the clinking of glasses. Friends and family gathered around Sophia and Alexander, offering their congratulations and well wishes. The atmosphere was jubilant, with everyone celebrating the love and happiness of the newly engaged couple.
Amidst the festivities, Sophia couldn’t shake the thought of her mother from her mind. As the night drew to a close, Sophia slipped away from the crowd, needing a moment of solitude. Stepping outside into the cool evening air, she found a quiet spot in the garden and took out her phone.
With a deep breath, Sophia dialed her mother’s number, her heart pounding with anticipation. As the phone rang, she hoped that her mother would answer, eager to share the news of her engagement and reconnect with her after so long apart..
“And that’s if she’s not my beloved daughter,” her mother’s voice hummed cheerfully.
“Hi Mom, how are you?”
“Wonderful. I signed up for a literature club. Rather, we sit and drink wine with a group of forty-year-old women and gossip, but it’s still a lot of fun.”
“I’m very happy for you. Actually, I’m calling to tell you that I’m coming to visit you.”
“Magnificent. I missed you so much. Already people began to doubt that I had a daughter. I keep telling them that you are an important lawyer and you have a lot of work to do.”
Sophia laughed, hearing her mother made her feel great.
“And I won’t come alone.”
“Evelyn is coming?”
“No, my fiancé,” said Sophia.
There was a long silence on the other end of the line. Finally, there was a happy scream.
“You are kidding? Is it true? Who? Do I know him?”
“Alexander Stone.”
“Wait. Why do I feel like you’re not saying that sentence to me for the first time?”
