She had a sinking feeling that something major had gone down.

“Is Warren in there, right?” Jameson sighed heavily, knowing Jarvis had been caught, and now Bainbridge had pulled another ona

Misfortune had befallen the family.

He felt even serier for Wamen.

“He’s inside. But Warren instructed that if Gwendolyn arrives, she is to enter alone” the butler, Zack, reminded her

Jameson pointed to his nose, I can’t go in? But Gwendolyn…

Gwendolyn pressed her lips tightly together as she looked at the door before her and said, “Til go in by myself”

Her hand rested on the doorknob, gently tuming it.

Beyond the wall of bookshelves, the bedroom scene was obscured.

This was her second time entering Warren’s chamber.

The door closed behind her, Zack ensuring privacy.

Gwendolyn hesitated for a moment before stepping further inside. There she saw Bainbridge, his face contorted with anger, pinned to the floor by a burly bodyguard. Warren lay with his eyes shut on a recliner beside him a bamboo side table with a bowl of some dark and cold concoction that must have been some kind of herbal remedy.

“You’ve come.”

Warren’s voice was hoarse and worn as he slightly opened his eyes to look at Gwendolyn, the light in them long extinguished.

“Did you specifically ask for me? Gwendolyn glanced at the disgraced Bainbridge on the floor, then back to Warren,

“I did.” Warren seemed more at ease with her. He motioned with his hand, “Trouble you to check what’s been added to this medicine.”

Gwendolyn approached and carefully lifted the bowl to smell its contents.

It was a familiar scent.

“Tampered deadly drugs… Direct consumption could lead to poisoning, even death. This was Waldo’s concoction for killing Howard.”

Gwendolyn was calm in her tone.

Wamen inhaled deeply upon hearing this, “Bastard!”

He hurled a glass from the side table at Bainbridge, the impact swelling his forehead. © 2024 Nôv/el/Dram/a.Org.

“Grandfather” Bainbridge streamed with tears, “It’s all Howard. He’s relentless and put Jarvis away, and I’m next! I need that 30% share to stand against him.”

Warren coughed furiously.

“Even with the shares, you can’t stand against him!” he snapped.

“Why! Are you also siding with Howard? Since your 70th birthday, you’ve been planning to give the shares to Howard, haven’t you?” Bainbridge screamed, defiantly lifting his head to face Warren with resentment.

Warren spoke with a raspy voice, “It’s all my fault I shouldn’t have played favorites. After the car accident, I cleaned up your mess, not wanting to lose two grandsons at once. But you just got worse. Haven’t I been good enough to your side of the family?”

“Good? Because we’re easier to control, right? We do whatever you say. Not like Howard who has his own mind!” Bainbridge’s laugh was bitter, his eyes reddening.

Warren waved a dismissive hand, full of disappointment, “I won’t pursue today’s poisoning. Get him out, I don’t want to see him.”

Who would have thought that at seventy, he would end up so utterly alone?

The bodyguard escorted Bainbridge out, leaving only Gwendolyn and Warren in the vast room.

“You’ve witnessed quite the spectacle.” Warren said, looking at Gwendolyn.

Her expression remained calm as she replied, “You didn’t ask me here just to identify poison, did you?”

Warren spoke softly. “Go open the top drawer of the bedside table.”
