Chapter 233
Chapter 233
The silvery moonlight hung like a delicate hook in the sky.
In the master bedroom of the cozy suburban cottage, Gwendolyn was seeing off Roselind and Jeannie. With a medical kit in hand, she was ready to change Howard’s bandages.
As she pushed open the door, she saw the tall, commanding figure of Howard on the phone, his voice stern and his expression icy.
He wrapped up the conversation briskly and turned to her.
“Mr. Chadwick, I’m here to change your dressing,” Gwendolyn said, placing the kit on the side table and pulling out antiseptic wipes.
“Gwendolyn, there’s new information on Jack’s case. The police found out who’s backing him,” Howard informed her after ending the phone call.
“What? Backing him up?” Gwendolyn looked at him in surprise.
She had assumed that Jack was driven by greed, recalling how he’d initially threatened to strip her and take photos for blackmail.
She hadn’t expected a mastermind behind the scenes.
“Who is it?” Gwendolyn’s mind raced through possible suspects, even considering Ryan and Selina. But she instinctively felt that such high–profile individuals wouldn’t stoop to such vulgar tactics.
“The Walker family’s only daughter, Candy.”
The unfamiliar name took Gwendolyn aback.
Howard continued, “I’ve kept the details of Jack’s case under wraps. The public only knows that Candy was involved in an accident while being summoned for questioning. The Walkers have applied for bail.”
This was to protect Gwendolyn’s reputation, to shield her from the rumor mill that could cause secondary harm to a victim.
“Thank you, Mr. Chadwick,” Gwendolyn said softly.
Howard looked at her intensely, “The Walkers are planning to come and apologize tomorrow and discuss a private settlement. If you’re not into it, we can keep Candy Walker detained. But if you do decide to forgive her, then think about what you want in return.”
Gwendolyn paused before asking, “She’ll only be detained?”
Howard explained, “Although I emphasized attempted murder and burglary when I reported the crime, the police have their own assessments and investigations. Candy paid Jack to invade your privacy. As for what she planned to do with the photos, that’s all speculative, mostly Jack’s intent. After some back and forth, the most Candy could face is detention.”
Detention would be a tough pill for the Walker family to swallow.
Taking a deep breath, Gwendolyn replied, “I understand.”
She carefully unraveled the bandages from Howard’s arm, wincing at the sight of the raw wound.
“This might sting a bit from the alcohol,” she warned, her voice filled with worry.
10:20
Howard downplayed fats injury but seeing her care, he teased, “The doctor said fil have a scar, and consider it a battle wound for you. You’ll have to be extra nice to me now?
Gwendolyn nodded obediently
Howard chuckled, “That easy to foot? Then you’ll let me get away with anything”
“Roerdind said she’ll handle you, Gwendolyn retorted with a playful glare.
“You have gotten your crosshairs on me, huh? No wonder you are so indifferent”
“Stop teasing”
Gwendolyn’s voice had a hint of annoyance, and her hands pressed a little harder than necessary.
Howard sucked in a sharp breath as the alcohol hit the wound, his stoic facade crumpling, “Just yesterday, you were all lovey dovey, calling me ‘honey and promising amends. Now, with Roselind on your side, you’ve turned into a shrew”
Gwendolyn’s cheeks flushed, “Not at all,”
She realized that Mr. Chadwick had a side to him that was lively and vibrant, far more appealing than his usual cold, aloof demeanor.
“Do yesterday’s promises still count? He was asking for his due.
Gwendolyn stammered, unable to articulate a response, and Howard suggested coolly, “It’s still early. How about we watch a movie in the home theater?”
“But your injury hasn’t healed yet? Gwendolyn’s neck reddened, and she swiftly exited the room in a fluster. Howard’s lips curled into a smile, amused by where her thoughts had wandered. All rights © NôvelDrama.Org.
It was just an innocent movie viewing, after all.
The next day, dawn broke with a quiet serenity that was soon shattered by the sounds of commotion in the cottage.
