Chapter 53

Just shy of 8 a.m., Gwendolyn reached the hospital entrance.

Out of nowhere, a figure darted forward. Scott intercepted her, gripping her wrist tightly.

“Gwendolyn, please forgive me.”

“Scott, let go of me.”

The last thing Gwendolyn expected was for Scott to cause a scene at the hospital. With the constant stream of people, all eyes were now on them.

Tears rimmed his eyes, Scott dropped to his knees and pleaded, “I don’t care if you were the side chick, I just want you back. I can give you money. I know you got into Bayridge Hospital by pulling strings. Otherwise, a country girl like you, without connections or clout, how could you…”

Passersby began to gossip and point at Gwendolyn, “Shameless, playing the field.”

“The morals of the world are declining. Nowadays, even pretty young girls are looking for shortcuts.”

Their words were encircling Gwendolyn, weighing her down.

“He’s not my boyfriend.” Gwendolyn retorted sharply, “Keep your hands off me, or I’m calling the cops.” Original from NôvelDrama.Org.

“Someone talks some sense into her. Her name’s Gwendolyn, an intern in the Acupuncture and Rehabilitation department, and she’s my girlfriend. She’s been fooling around with some rich old men, and I don’t want her going down the wrong path.”

Scott’s eyes glittered with malice as he deliberately spread Gwendolyn’s personal details. Mamie had said Gwendolyn was dumped by her sugar daddy, tarnishing her reputation and leaving her with

nowhere to turn.

He thought about his own recent misfortunes and felt nothing but resentment. Everything his family touched seemed to crumble, and he himself couldn’t catch a break.

“Lady, you should be grateful for such a devoted boyfriend.”

Gwendolyn was at a loss for words.

In this day and age, it was far too easy to spread rumors about a beautiful woman. No one would waste their time seeking the truth.

Just as she pulled out her phone to call the police, someone in the crowd knocked it out of her hand.

“Make way. Don’t block the hospital entrance, clear out.” Several security guards called out, pushing the rubberneckers aside.

“Move along

Good morning, Mr. Hamilton.”

Sanford approached, bending down to pick up Gwendolyn’s phone, his cold gaze resting on Scott.

“Causing a ruckus at the hospital entrance can get you detained,” he warned.

Scott, with a stubborn tilt of his neck, retorted, “Since when is talking to my girlfriend a

crime?”

“You’re disrupting my employee’s ability to work,” Sanford said with impatience, “Security, take him to the security office and put him on the blacklist.”

“Let go. Gwendolyn, you’re something else, snagging yourself a new man so quickly.” Scott’s complaints were cut short as security led him away.

Gwendolyn took a deep breath, her fingers trembling, a blaze of anger kindling in her heart.

Sanford extended his hand, offering her the phone.

“Thank you, Mr. Hamilton, Gwendolyn said, steadying her voice.

“I don’t know what your deal is with that guy, but next time, don’t bring your personal drama to the hospital,” Sanford admonished with a frown, “It would be quite the embarrassment if Howard found out about this.”

“Understood.” Gwendolyn replied.

“Get to work,” Sanford said, feeling an unexplained irritation at seeing her so distressed.

“Yes.”

Gwendolyn stepped into the hospital, only to find Mamie waiting for her in the corridor.

“Gwendolyn, did you enjoy this morning’s drama?” Mamie teased, her smile sultry, “Scott is so smitten with you. Too bad his family is going bankrupt.”

“It was you who stirred him up.”

Gwendolyn glared at her coldly, “What have I ever done to you?”

Mamie’s face hardened with scorn, “Your very existence is an offense to me.” After all, how dare Gwendolyn, a girl from the sticks, be so pretty, competent, and well–liked?

She was supposed to be a nobody, a country bumpkin who’d fade into the background. Why did she have to shine?
