“I can’t wait to see the look on Howard’s face when he’s utterly defeated,” he sneered with devious pleasure, “Send an invitation for the groundbreaking ceremony over to him, and make sure he knows his attendance is mandatory.”
He wanted Howard to be there, to witness his moment of triumph.
Of course, Mr. Bainbridge.”
“No need to keep an eye on the hospital anymore. I don’t want him catching on to us.”
“Understood.”
“And one more thing…” Bainbridge chuckled, “Get a hold of Summit Corp’s project manager, Larkin. Tell him I’ve signed that wager deal.”
He was staking his twenty percent shareholding on the success of the “Utopia Skylines Project.” If Utopia Skylines was completed without a hitch, the Chadwick Group would soar to new heights. Any mishaps, though, would be a blow solely borne by the Chadwick Group.
But failure was not an option in Bainbridge’s mind.
After issuing his orders, Bainbridge couldn’t resist popping open a bottle of champagne to celebrate his cunning plan. The bubbly drink made for a refreshing start to the day.
Monday came around in no time.
It’s the intern assessment day at Bayridge Hospital.
Word of the wager between Mamie and Gwendolyn had spread through the corridors like wildfire.
Mamie was under the tutelage of a very responsible doctor and was performing exceptionally well.
Gwendolyn, on the other hand, was left to menial tasks without a mentor to guide her.
It seemed she didn’t stand a chance.
“It’s just wishful thinking on her part. The hospital ain’t like school where you can ace a test just by hitting the books, hard,” the gossip went around.
“She thinks she’s all that,” Polly said with a tinge of jealousy, “Always fussing over the patients in Room 2106, acting like she wants to tuck them into bed herself.”
‘That’s not the half of it, and I heard there’s been some hugging and coziness. If she loses, she’ll have to slink back to school with her tail between her legs.”
Gwendolyn stood in a corner, tuning out the remarks. She remembered Mr. White’s words
about the assessment, and it was all about pinpointing the right spots and diagnosing the basic symptoms.
Gwendolyn, there’s still time to back out,” Mamie said with overconfidence, “Today’s examiners are Dr. Yates and Dr. Ladd. They’re both quite strict, and Dr. Ladd is my mentor. Just kneel and admit you’re not as good as me, and I might let you off easy.”
Gwendolyn’s cool gaze flickered over her as she sneered, “Are you still dreaming? You can go back to bed.”
“We’ll see how tough you talk later.” Mamie retorted.
Nine o’clock struck.
The examiners entered the room, and the assessment began.Exclusive content © by Nô(v)el/Dr/ama.Org.
Each intern faced a mannequin, the first step being to locate the right points.
Dr. Yates was stern, his presence on the stage devoid of any smile, his voice cold, “The Acupuncture and Rehabilitation department is one of the most renowned at Bayridge Hospital. Fail this assessment, and you’re out of the department.”
He was celebrated for his miraculous healing skills and held a prestigious position at Bayridge Hospital. Rumor had it, that he had crossed paths with the legendary Enoch in his younger days.
Dr. Ladd, in contrast, was more approachable but deferred to Dr. Yates.
Everyone tensed up.
“All your little movements, I can see them. The assessment starts now.”
As the questions cranked up the heat, many interns started to sweat, their hands. trembling as they punctured the mannequins with needles, unsure of their accuracy.
Even Mamie, who had been doing well, clenched her teeth, barely keeping up.
Only one intern remained calm, her movements fluid and precise, fast and accurate.
Each point was hit with meticulous care.
Her needling technique was mystifying, carrying an indescribable grace.
Dr. Yates‘ attention was soon captured by her, his face softening as he approached. He strolled over, tossing her a challenge meticulously masked within his question.
The other interns groaned/and this was beyond the syllabus.
Gwendolyn pursed her lips, her execution steadfast and unflustered.
Mamie glanced over and was struck by disbelief and shock.
