Chapter 139
Kira
Laughter and chatter filled the air as I walked into the kitchen, where the head maid was busy preparing dinner. The aromat of roasted vegetables and freshly baked bread wafted through the air, making my stomach growl with hunger. But I wasn’t there to eat. I was there to set the table, to do my duty as the invisible slave in this household.
She looked up at me, a smug smile spreading across her face. “Kira, can you set the table?” she asked, her voice dripping with condescension. I was about to set the table and she only asked if could to annoy me even more than I already was.
I set the table, my hands shaking with anger. I couldn’t believe this was my life. I couldn’t believe I was stuck in this never- ending cycle of servitude. My anger increased as Mara walked in the dinning room. Aston walked in right after her, a smile on his face. “Hey, Mara,” he said, kissing her on the cheek.
I felt like I’d been punched again, my heart shattering into even smaller pieces. How could he do this to me? How could he choose her, after everything we’d been through?
Mara smiled up at him, her eyes shining with adoration. “Hey, Aston,” she replied, her voice dripping with sweetness.
I stood there, feeling like an outsider. They didn’t even see me, didn’t even notice me. I was just a ghost, a shadow in the corner of their perfect little world.
Aston acted like I was invincible lately and it was killing me.
Helt like I was dying. like my heart was being ripped out of my chest. I didn’t know how much more I could take.
Brax walked in, his eyes avoiding mine. “Hey, guys,” he said, his voice gruff.
I felt a pang of sadness. Brax was the only one who ever talked to me, the only one who ever acknowledged my presence. But now, he was distant, cold. I didn’t know what I had done wrong.
Mara smiled at him, her eyes shining with warmth. “Hey, Brax,” she said, her voice dripping with sweetness.
I stood there, feeling like an outsider. They didn’t even see me, didn’t even notice me. I was just a whisper, a shadow.
It
s like a switch had been flipped, and suddenly everyone was treating Mara like royalty. Even Brax, who had always been kind to me, was now showering her with attention. I couldn’t understand why.
I had overheard Aston and Mara talking about marriage a few days ago. I was serving their meal, trying to be invisible as usual. But when I heard them mention the “M” word, my heart almost stopped. I almost dropped the dish I was holding, but I managed to keep it together. I couldn’t let them see how much it affected me.
As I continued serving, I couldn’t help but feel a burning pain in my chest. It was like someone had taken a knife and stabbed me right in the heart. I wanted to cry, to scream, to run away. But I couldn’t. I had to keep my mask on, had to pretend like everything was fine. The only source of solace I had was gone too.
Brax was suddenly busier than ever, always running off to help Mara with something. I didn’t even have the right to complain, because whenever he was around me, he was still kind and courteous. But could sense the distance between us growing.
Ifelt a pang of sadness, Brax was the only one who had ever shown me kindness, and now even he was slipping away. I knew I couldn’t blame him, though. He was just trying to fit in, to be part of the group.
As the days went by, things only got worse.
I walked down the hallway, trying to keep my emotions in check I had been serving Mara and Aston for what felt like an eternity, and it was getting harder and harder to pretend like I didn’t care. But I had to keep up the act, had to keep them

thinking I was invincible.
As I approached their room, I could hear the sound of laughter and whispers coming from inside. I took a deep breath and pushed open the door, trying to steel myself for what I might see
Mara and Aston were cuddled up in bed, looking like the perfect couple. I felt a pang of jealousy and anger, but I pushed it down, trying to focus on the what I needed to do.
“Good morning.” Mara said, smiling at me. “Thank you for bringing us tea, Kira.” She was just try to rub in my face and it was working.
I nodded, trying to keep my voice steady. “Of course, Mara. I’m happy to serve you.”
As I approached the bed, I couldn’t help but notice the way Aston was looking at Mara. It was like he adored her, like he couldn’t take his eyes off her. I felt a lump form in my throat, and I had to look away.
But as I was setting down the tray, my eyes were blinded by tears I didn’t see the bag on the ground, and I tripped, spilling the hot coffee all over Mara’s body.
“***k, Kira!” she screamed, jumping out of bed. “Kira, what the?”
I stood there, frozen in horror. I couldn’t believe what I had done
Aston rushed to Mara’s side, her him clean up the mess. He glared hard at me and I could feel my hands shaking. I was rooted to the ground in fear. There was pure unfiltered rage in Aston’s eyes and I was about to pee in my f***g pants. What the hell has I gotten myself into?
He closed the distance between us in nano seconds. I felt like I was in a nightmare, unable to wake up. Aston’s slap sent me crashing to the ground, my head spinning. I tried to sit up, but everything was a blur. My ears rang loudly, and I could hear m******
Aston’s face appeared above me, his eyes blazing with anger. “What the f***k is wrong with you?” he yelled, his voice echoing in my head. “Are you trying to harm my child?”
I tried to speak, but my voice was shaking. “N-no, Aston. I-I’m sorry,” I stuttered.
But he didn’t listen. He hit me again, his fist connecting with my jaw. I felt like I was going to pass out.

I lay on the ground, my body aching all over. I could feel hot tears streaming down my face, and my head was spinning.
Mara rushed to my side, helping me sit up. “Kira, oh my god, I’m so sorry,” she said, her voice laces with amusement and mockery, it was hard to miss even though it looked like she was trying to help, I could tell she couldn’t be happier.
But I just shook my head, unable to speak. I felt like I was going to vomit,
Aston stood over us, his chest heaving with anger. “Get out of my sight,” he spat at me, “You’re lucky I didn’t kill you.” I nodded, still trying to process what had just happened. I knew I had to get out of there, had to get away from him. Brax helped me up, and we walked out of the room, leaving Aston and Mara behind.
As we walked, Brax kept asking me if I was okay, but I just shook my head. I didn’t know how to answer.

We finally reached my roon and Brax helped me onto the bed I’ll get you some ice,” he said, and left the room.
I lay there, my body aching, my head spinning. I couldn’t believe what had just happened. The rage in his eyes. I had never seen him so mad before, fear gripped me.
I thought about everything that had led up to this moment. I thought about how I had been treated like a servant, forced to do their bidding. I thought about how I had been ignored, dismissed, and belittled. And I knew that I couldn’t take it anymore. He was really going to kill me.
He saved me countless times to kill me himself? What kind of monster did that?
I knew that I had to leave, had to get away from them. But I was scared. I was scared of what might happen if I left. I was scared of being alone.
But I knew that I couldn’t stay. I couldn’t keep living like this. Brax came back with the ice interrupting my thoughts and
