Chapter 98 A Big Fire

After Betty got out of Jeffrey‘s car and returned to her villa, she ate dinner as she usually did. Soon she went for a bath before going to bed.

She felt strange and extremely sleepy that day and even when she was taking a bath, she felt dizzy. Al most as soon as her head touched the pillow, she fell asleep. No dream had interrupted her sleep.

She didn‘t know how late it had been when she was awakened by a pungent smell of smoke.

She coughed while she was sleeping, feeling stifled by the smoke.

Then she struggled a little and woke up. Her eyelids were heavy and her eyes ached because of the s moke.

There seemed to be something wrong. She got up quickly. But when she sat up, Betty

found her body so weak that she had no strength at all.

The woman wondered what went wrong with

her.

But she could not care so much at that

moment. She turned on the light on the bedside table immediately.

Then she saw the whole room submerged in the billowing black smoke.

Was it on fire?

Betty was so frightened. The pungent smoke made her cough worse. But she calmed down as soon as she could. Then she stumbled out of bed, dragging her tired body, grabbed her coat and rushed out of the room.

But when she opened the door, she was completely dumbfounded.

There was a spreading fire.

Thanks to the door, the flames didn‘t burn

its way into her room. But now that she was at the entrance, she saw the whole corridor was gobbed by the fire, the tongues of the flames greedily licking the pillars and walls.

“Lillian! Robert!” At that moment, Betty was still worried about the two elderly people in the villa. But no one responded after she called several times. Then she was choked a gain by the smoke.

She couldn‘t care too much at the moment. She had to get herself out of danger first.

But it was impossible for her to escape such a big fire by rushing out directly. It was too late.

She tried to calm down and ran back to the room, closeing the door. Betty rushed into the bathroom wit h a blanket in her hand. She then soaked the fabric in the water, and then put it around her shoulder an d rushed out again.

With the protection of the dampened

blanket, she felt bolder. She lowered her body as much as possible in the burning corridor to avoid inhaling too much smoke.

When she finally reached the stairs, she found the fire was bigger. Several steps had been burnt down, which made it impossible for her to get through.

When Betty was in a panic, she suddenly saw a cloud of violent smoke billowing and approaching her.

She looked at the fog and was stunned for several seconds before she realized it was smoke from a fire extinguisher.

The next second, a familiar slender body rushed over through the smoke.

“Betty, where are you?” Contentt bel0ngs to N0ve/lDrâ/ma.O(r)g!

Upon hearing the sound, Betty felt shocked yet delighted. She screamed as if she finally had the hope of being saved. “Jeffrey, I‘m here!”

The fire seemed to subside a little. But soon after Betty saw Jeffrey running towards her, a railing in the corridor suddenly fell off due to the fire and lay across the corridor, which separated the two of them. T he fire surged again.

“Damn it.” Betty heard Jeffrey muffled a curse. And he yelled to her, “Stay there and I‘ll come to your re scue right away.”

Before Betty responded to Jeffrey, all of a sudden she remembered something.

Kerwin‘s necklace was still in the room.

She was certain about it.

Kerwin loved the necklace deeply. He never brought it out of the villa. He usually kept it in the drawer w hen he went to work or went on business.

She was afraid if the fire was so fierce, the necklace might not be intact since the fire

could certainly burn the table down.

If so, Kerwin would be devastated.

She thought of the scene when he held the necklace with a sorrowful look, and she suddenly felt bitter.

She hated it when she could be safe and sound while leaving Kerwin‘s treasure back in the room to be burnt to ashes without helping him retrieve it at all.

Although she knew that the necklace was not a living creature but a thing, it was still her husband‘s bel oved treasure. She really couldn‘t have it deprived of him. That was almost his last hope in the world.

Thinking of this, she looked at the blanket on herself. It was still wet. She could use it to keep off the harm of the flames for a while. The fire was not as ferocious as it was before. And perhaps it would still take Jeffrey some time to get to her.

So she bit her lips, held her breath and screamed, “Jeffrey, I have to go back to the

room to get something.”

Jeffrey was struggling to put out the fire. He heard Betty‘s yelling and shouted back to her with rage, “Betty, are you crazy? What can be more important than your own life?”

She didn‘t say anything more and ran back to the room directly without hesitation.

Her body felt kind of fatigued for some reason. But she could not pay attention to it. She just held her br eath and darted back to the room.

She ran too fast, and inhaled too much smoke. The dark fog made her cough badly, but she kept walki ng and rushed to the table.

She didn‘t close the door when she left the room before, so at that time the fire had already spread into the room. The ta ble was burning, Betty went over to open the drawer with the blanket draping on her shoulders.

But the fabric was almost dried up by the fire.

And her hands were nearly scalded at that moment.

“Ouch,” she screamed in pain. But she was determined to pull out the drawer anyway.

Soon, she spotted the crystal necklace, taking it out swiftly.

Then she also wanted to take the photo out, but it was a combustible object and once it was taken out, it was burned down immediately.

She gave up the picture, and held the necklace tightly, but did not dare to exert too much force so as to break it.

When she rushed to the door to try to get out, the bookcase by the entrance suddenly collapsed with a thump.

All the books on the shelf had long been burned to ashes. The wallpaper of the shelf blocked the passag

backwards, feeling frightened.

“What am I going to do?”

The door was blocked at once. She didn‘t know how to get out then.

She thought of rolling onto the ground out of the room with the blanket around her. But the fabric piece a

She was in a dilemma. At that moment, she even regretted her whimsical and impulsive decision.

“Oh! Could it be that I‘m going to die with this necklace?”

She didn‘t know if she was really going to die in this fire, would Kerwin moan for her or wept for the lost j

Probably the latter.

After all, compared with Julia, whom he had once loved so dearly, she was just a stranger whom he had met for a few months.

Betty couldn‘t believe she would still think too much at such a critical moment.

The fire around her is getting more and more

treacherous. She could hardly see the corridor clearly. The smoke was getting thicker. She coughed and tears blurred her

eyes.

“Am I going to die here?”

When she was nearly about to collapse, she carefully put the necklace around her neck to protect it.

If someone had found her and the necklace on her corpse, Kerwin could understand her good– willed intentions. She hoped her husband could appreciate it and would take

good care of her mother after she died.

While she was weeping and thinking, she

suddenly heard a loud roar…

“Betty!”
