Chapter 697 Age Is Just A Number
Sheldon mentioned how his family could only afford to get him and Tobias chocolate on Christmas and
how his brother would always let him have it.
Skylar could not help but wonder why Kai's father did not help Claudia when the woman needed it.
Motivated by her curiosity, Skylar jumped to her feet and went to sit down beside Kai. “Why didn't your
family help your Aunt Claudia back then?”
In response, Kai smirked at her before answering, “If you're hoping to get to know more about Tobias
from me, I'm afraid you'll be disappointed. Not even his own brother knows exactly what kind of person This content © Nôv/elDr(a)m/a.Org.
he is, so why would I? To be honest, our family is a little more complicated than most.”
Skylar rolled her eyes at him when he presumed to know what she was thinking. “That's not why I asked
the question. I was just curious why your family didn't help a relative in need.”
“Well, if you ask me, the relationship between relatives doesn't mean much to me. We'd be no better
than strangers to each other if my family didn't have to depend on Tobias.”
It was only then that Skylar realized why Tobias always came up with all kinds of excuses to avoid family
gatherings.
Since it was a chilly night, Kai removed his jacket and covered Skylar with it. When she tried to remove
it, he quickly stopped her. “Keep it on. The camera guy is probably drooling on his pillow right now, so
you can be sure nobody will see us. Besides, you're in Baykeep now; the paparazzi can only follow you
so far.”
Skylar decided that the man had a point, so she kept the jacket on.
Suddenly, she missed Tobias' smell, which was a mixture of his white sandalwood cologne and the smell
of tobacco.
Kai knew he would not be able to sleep unless he told Skylar everything she wanted to hear.
Nonetheless, there was a look of contempt on his face when he mentioned his family. “Aunt Claudia is
the eldest among her siblings; she had two younger brothers and one younger sister. Since my
grandparents passed away young, Aunt Claudia had to start working when she was only a teenager. My
father was a smart one, so he made a lot of money shortly after he graduated and began working. By
then, Aunt Claudia had divorced my uncle and owed a lot of money. My father pretended to be dead
while my uncle told Aunt Claudia that he was just as poor as she was. My younger aunt even disowned
Aunt Claudia when she asked for help. Aunt Claudia did everything she could to bring up her two boys
on her own, even though she was so poor that she couldn't even afford to get little Sheldon baby
formula. Even now, she feels like she owes Sheldon, so he could do whatever he wants, and she would
just let him.”
Skylar thought only financially-challenged families would be so cold as to disown a family member, but
Kai's words had clearly proven her wrong.
Since she finally knew what the family was really like behind all those seemingly heart-warming family
gatherings, Skylar felt disgusted by them.
Kai patted his thighs before continuing, “If I were you, I would stay away from them. Keep your distance
while you still can. You haven't met my younger aunt yet, but trust me when I say that you'd rather keep it
that way.”
Skylar had a solemn look on when she said, “I think we're getting ahead of ourselves here. My plan is to
just take it one step at a time. There's no point in overthinking it; it'll only add more wrinkles to my face,
and I don't want that.”
Gazing at Skylar, Kai did notice some wrinkles on the woman's face, but that could also be due to the
fact she had gotten skinnier.
“Hey, if you think you're getting old, imagine how Tobias must feel,” mocked Kai nonchalantly.
“I don't know what you're talking about. He's only in his thirties. Sure, he's a little older than I am, but I
think he's at the age where he's most attractive.”
To that, Kai sneered, “I'm sure he's always been that attractive because he managed to get someone
pregnant when he was just a teenage boy. It never amounted to anything, though. He wasn't ready to be
a father then.”
