His Beloved Ex-Wife

Chapter 629

She slumped down, as if all her strength had drained away.

Thankfully, Josiah caught her just in time, preventing her from collapsing onto the cold floor.

“Lysander.” He held her tightly in his arms and consoled her, “Don’t be afraid. Don’t be scared, for everything will be just fine…”

Lysander squeezed her eyes shut in agony, clutching Josiah’s arm tightly. She struggled to lift herself up, but her drained energy would not allow it Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org exclusive © material.

Josiah helped to steady her, saying, “Don’t move anymore. You might feel a bit more comfortable leaning

on me.”

There were seats not far behind them, but Lysander lacked the energy to reach them. She stood as close to the emergency room as possible, clinging tightly to Josiah for support as he suggested.

As tears slowly trickled down Lysander’s cheeks, she could no longer contain her sorrow. She buried her head in Josiah’s sleeve and broke into a heart–wrenching cry.

It was common to see distraught family members of patients wailing in despair outside the emergency room. Medical workers passing by had grown accustomed to such scenes, offering only a sympathetic glance.

Lysander had always been strong and never needed pity, especially during her most vulnerable moments.

Josiah positioned himself with his back to the hallway, effectively blocking any gazes directed their way.

Lysander had suppressed her emotions and held back her tears for the past few days. Only now could she finally let go, unable to contain her pentup feelings any longer.

Josiah remained silent, holding her tightly as a steady, supportive presence.

After what seemed like an eternity, the doors of the emergency room swung open, and a doctor emerged. He was Lysander’s former classmate and had been briefed that the patient inside was her father. That was why he personally came out to update her on the situation.

“Lysander, I need you to mentally prepare yourself before I share the following information. Your father is still unconscious, and his vital signs are extremely unstable. At this point, all we can do is to admit him to the ICU. We’ll need to observe him further before discussing a specific treatment plan.”

In other words, the medical staff had exhausted all options, and now it was up to fate.

During her tenure there, Lysander had handled similar situations involving families of critically ill pregnant women. It was not until she found herself in their position that she truly grasped their emotions.

It was quite impossible to truly walk in someone else’s shoes.

Lysander’s eyes were brimming with tears. She struggled to maintain her composure while handling Maverick’s paperwork. Her demeanor betrayed a sense of emptiness, as if she had lost a part of herself.

Before the doctor could inquire further, Josiah stepped in, saying, “You take a rest for now, and leave everything else to me.”

He led Lysander to a nearby chair, speaking softly as he asked her to wait there. Then, he proceeded to manage the paperwork as instructed by the doctor.

When presenting the critical illness notice, the doctor reminded them of the hospital’s protocol. This agreement should be signed by a family member of the patient for it to take effect.”

Josiah paused for a brief moment before replying. “I am the patient’s son–in–law.”

The doctor glanced at him and then at Lysander. Seeing no objection from Lysander, the doctor proceeded to methodically advise Josiah on the next steps. Soon after, they transferred the unconscious Maverick to the ICU.

Lysander trailed behind them like a lost spirit, standing outside the glass window with her gaze fixed on Maverick, who had tubes all over his body. His organs had deteriorated severely. The fact that he managed to hold on until now and only fell into a coma recently was miraculous in itself. Nonetheless, Lysander silently prayed in her heart that he would pull through.

After Josiah completed all the necessary tasks, he came back to her side. It was a while before he spoke again. “Lysander. I’ll keep watch over Mr. Thorne. You should go rest for a bit. Mrs. Thorne and the others. should be here by now. I’ll let you know immediately if there’s any update.”

Lysander gently shook her head. “I’m not going anywhere. I’ll stay right here with Dad.”

After confirming her decision, Josiah did not push any further. He stood by her side, offering his quiet support.

“I’ll stay with you.”

Shortly after, hurried footsteps echoed from the other end of the hallway as Laura and Michelle arrived.

Laura had already learned about Maverick’s lung cancer from Michelle on the way to the hospital. Seeing him in a coma from the other side of the glass window made her eyes well up. She asked, “Lysa, when will he wake up?”

When Lysander saw Laura and Michelle, she knew she had to be strong for their sake. “Mom, the doctor has already issued a critical condition notice for Dad,” she said, her voice hoarse.

All they could do now was wait.

Earlier in the day, Laura had been reminiscing about her youthful days with Maverick. By evening, she was dealt such a severe blow that she fainted from the shock of the drastic turn of events.

“Mom! Mom!”

Lysander and Michelle rushed over to support her, while Josiah quickly called for the doctor.

Fortunately, being at the hospital meant the doctor arrived promptly. After examining Laura, the doctor explained, “She fainted from extreme emotional distress. She should wake up after some rest, but it would be best for a family member to stay with her.”

Lysander felt utterly overwhelmed as she was caught in a difficult situation. She glanced between Maverick and Laura, wishing she could/split herself in two.

Michelle, who had been crying uncontrollably, managed to hold back her tears. Choking on her sobs, she said, “Lysander, Josiah, you stay here with Dad, and I’ll take care of Mom.”

After saying so, she did not wait for them to respond. She swiftly turned around and hurried off with the doctor.

As Lysander watched Michelle’s figure recede into the distance, an overwhelming sense of helplessness washed over her. Her eyes brimmed with anguish as she confessed, “I shouldn’t have agreed to Dad so casily. What he wanted me to do… I just can’t. I thought I could protect my sister, take care of Mom, and hold this family together. But what happened? I’m standing here, powerless, watching it all unfold. Despite. being a doctor, I couldn’t even save my own father…”

Her heart nearly shattered into pieces when confronted with harsh reality.

Josiah spoke in the gentlest tone possible, “As a doctor, you’ve saved countless lives. As a daughter, you’ve done your best to fulfill Mr. and Mrs. Thorne’s wishes. You’ve done exceptionally well, and you can’t bear all these responsibilities alone.”

Lysander’s face was pale, she was so weak she could barely blink. She looked at Maverick, who was only separated from her by a pane of glass. In her most desperate moment, she noticed him slightly raising hist hand.

The ICU nurse also observed the same thing. She strode toward Maverick to conduct an examination before leaving the room.

Lysander hurried over, only to hear the nurse speak in a solemn tone. “The patient has regained consciousness, but based on our experience, it’s likely terminal lucidity. If there’s anything you’d like to say, now would be the time.”

Her worst fear materialized despite her hopes.

Having already plunged into despair, Lysander was numb to any further impact. All she managed to utter was a resigned, “I see.”

She was about to turn around and get Michelle and Laura back, but Josiah timely stopped her. “You go check on Mr. Thorne first, I’ll bring them over immediately.”

After guiding her to the door, he swiftly turned and dashed off, shouting for assistance as he went.

– Lysander snapped out of her reverie as she entered the ICU and saw Maverick, who had just taken off his oxygen mask. His face was no longer as pale as before. In that instant, she realized keenly that this would be their final meeting in this lifetime, as father and daughter.

“Mom and Michelle are on their way, Dad,” she updated him softly, holding back tears as she approached the bedside.

Maverick had already scanned his surroundings and grasped his own condition. He held Lysander’s hands tenderly while conveying his profound affection for his eldest daughter, saying, “I know.”

Lysander clasped his hand tightly, afraid he might slip away in an instant.
