The cries within the ward grew louder, piercing and heart–wrenching.

Snapping back to reality, Lysander saw her father, who was covered with a white sheet, being wheeled away by the nurses.
She realized she was no longer the little girl her father used to send to school while walking hand in hand. Tears streaming down her face, she ran forward, growing taller and older with each stride until she finally morphed into her current self.
“Dad, don’t leave. Wait for me…
This time, Maverick did not look back like he used to when dropping her off at school. The darkness around her gradually engulfed her.
“Lysander! Wake up!” Another familiar voice roused her from the nightmare.
She slowly opened her eyes and met Josiah’s concerned gaze. He must have been watching over her for quite some time. Even his lips had become pale and dry.
“Where’s my dad? Josiah, where is he?” she asked anxiously, clutching his arm.
Understanding her distress, he replied gently, “Calm down and listen to me. Your father passed away peacefully without any pain. He even had a smile on his face.”
Is he truly gone? She gripped the blanket beneath her as hot tears slid down from the corners of her eyes, unable to utter another word.
He stayed by her side until she had calmed down before beginning to recount the events that had transpired after she lost consciousness.
“After you passed out, Mrs. Thorne also soon fainted from crying too hard. She hasn’t woken up yet. Michelle is devastated, but she’s staying strong and is currently with her in the ward next door. As for Mr. Thorne’s funeral arrangements… The hospital contacted the funeral home but I asked them to hold things off for now, so the cremation hasn’t taken place yet. Do you want to…”
He wanted to ask whether she intended to visit Laura first or go to the morgue to take one last look at Maverick. The words were on the tip of his tongue, but he found himself unable to say anything. Both of these options are just too cruel.
She was no longer crying and merely nodded numbly instead. Regardless of what he said to her next, she had no intention of responding.
Seeing that reminded him of the time she lost her child, and the pain of that memory was as though someone was twisting a knife in his heart. It was unbearable.

“It’s late already, and you barely touched your dinner. If you keep this up, you won’t be able to hold up. I’ve asked someone to get some soup. Have a little, okay?”

“I had someone deliver some over already. Mrs. Thorne will be able to eat when she wakes up.”
Lysander gave a slight nod.
He pulled a chair over to sit by the bed and told her about the situation in the adjacent ward as he opened the takeaway container. Then, he spooned up some soup and brought it to her lips. “Come, open your
mouth
There was a spark in her gaze when she heard him mention her mother and sister. “How’s Michelle doing?”
“She claims she has cried enough for the day and that her tears have nearly run dry, so she’s not going to cry anymore. Even if it’s only to take good care of Mrs. Thome, she forced herself to have some soup. She has grown up a lot,” he replied with a hint of nostalgia.
She lowered her head in anguish and hastily rubbed her face.
After he finished speaking in a low voice, he continued to cautiously persuade her to eat. “At least have a little bit to eat.”
“I really have no appetite,” she answered dully.
It broke his heart to hear her voice that had been reduced to a hoarse whisper from all her crying. “If Mr. Thorne were looking down on us from heaven, he surely wouldn’t want to see you like this. Even if it’s just so he can rest at ease, you must take good care of yourself.”
When she heard that, her body swayed slightly, finally showing some movement. She attempted to lift her hand to take the spoon but found that the little strength she had left had been completely depleted during her time in the ICU. She was so weak that she did not even have the energy to ball her hand into a fist.
“Just sit there. I’ll feed you,” he quickly said.
He gently held the spoon up to her lips, waiting for her to slowly swallow before scooping up another spoonful. However, she furrowed her brows, retching while struggling to suppress the discomfort welling up from her stomach.
Josiah quickly set down the container of soup and rushed to pat her back.
“Josiah,” she said, her face awash with tears..
It was hard to tell whether it was because of her grief or from the retching.
“Mm, I’m here,” he murmured, using a tissue to wipe her face.
“I don’t want to eat anymore.”
When one was consumed by sorrow, it was impossible for them to have
any appetite.
Seeing that, he dared not persuade her to drink the soup anymore. Instead, he set down the takeaway container, picked up the thermos flask he had prepared earlier to pour her a cup of warm water, then held it out to her. “All right. You don’t have to eat for now if you don’t want to. How about drinking some water?”
Her eyelashes fluttered slightly. At the thought of everything she had to attend to after this, she finally forced herself to take a sip of water from the cup in his hand.

Josiah waited until she shook her head to indicate she did not want to drink anymore. He was about to place the cup back on the bedside table and coax her to sleep, but before he could even get up, she had already stood up with an expression of anguish. Not only was her gait unsteady, but she also looked so frail as though she could break at any moment.
“Let me help-” he began, assuming that Lysander was worried about Laura and Michelle next door and wanted to check on them. However, he was mid–sentence when he saw her cover her mouth and rush into the bathroom.
She managed to stay upright by leaning heavily against the water tank for support. Then, she bent over and threw up the water and soup she had just consumed.
He dashed in, gently patting her back to help her catch her breath. Once she no longer felt the urge to throw up, he fetched some water for her to rinse her mouth.
“Never mind. You don’t have to drink it anymore.”
Lightly wrapping an arm around her, he slowly helped her return to the bed. Then, he bent down to take off the shoes she had put on in a rush earlier.
She sat there limply, allowing him to move her around as he pleased as though she was a lifeless ragdoll.
He was in utter distress. Despite knowing that whatever he said might not be of any use, he still called out to her, “Lysander, I know you’re listening. You need to let yourself cry. You can’t keep holding it in like this.”
Slowly, she turned her head and looked at him.
Nodding at her, he continued, “There’s no one else here. Being strong is a virtue, but emotions need to be expressed.”
She was silent.
“I’m here by your side.”
“Josiah…”
“I’m here. Go on. I’m listening.”
“I… I don’t have a father anymore…”
”
At that point, she could not care less about her past grievances with him. Simply seeing him as someone who could understand her current pain, she hugged him and buried her face in his shoulder, allowing herself to sob uncontrollably.
She cried herself to exhaustion and drifted off to sleep just like that. His shirt was soaked through with her tears at the shoulder, but he dared not move. Instead, he gently helped her lie down, adjusting her into a comfortable position where she could lean against him.
In the early hours of the morning, she stirred once from her slumber but did not do anything. She simply continued to weep, cried herself to sleep, and then woke up only to cry again. After several cycles of such emotional turmoil, she finally managed to fall into a peaceful sleep.
A few days later, the funeral home sent word.
