Neither Lysander nor Josiah were surprised. They were just a bit worried about the situation at the health center, so they planned to sort things out before heading over.
Astrid then said with a cheerful smile, “We are here to watch over things. If there’s a situation we can’t handle, there’s still enough time to call for help. Besides, Mr. Alvarez has said that the food is all set. Everyone is waiting for you guys to arrive before they start the feast.”
Everything was all set. The only thing missing were the two main characters who were invited.
Left with no other choice, Lysander agreed. After shedding her white coat, she led Josiah toward Blaine’s house.
As night fell, the dirt road in the village became particularly difficult to traverse. The two individuals found themselves stepping unevenly, one foot deep and the next shallow.
Suddenly, Lysander missed a step, and her body lurked sharply to the side.
Without thinking, Josiah reached out to steady Lysander, who had already regained her balance. However, in doing so, he unwittingly stepped into a mud pit.
With a splashing sound, a significant amount of mud splashed up.
Prior to that, Josiah’s clothes were already covered in black handprints. At that moment, his pants were completely ruined as well.
What was even more unbearable was the way the mud and water rushed into his shoes. In an instant, he felt as if both his feet were soaking in icy cold water.
There was also a fair amount of sand and small stones in the muddy water, and stepping on them caused him a slight prickle of pain.
Lysander felt a bit guilty. “I’ve grown accustomed to the paths around here. I can find my way even with my eyes closed. That’s not the case for you. Your leather shoes aren’t meant for dirt roads. You should be careful.”
“All right. I’m fine,” Josiah responded.
–“Did you bring a change of shoes and socks?”
“No.”
“Well…” Lysander thought of suggesting perhaps they could ask Blaine for a pair of shoes. They might be a bit rustic, but at least they would be dry, which was certainly better than continuing to wear damp socks and shoes.
However, upon further thought, Lysander feared that Josiah might not agree. This golden–spooned man has never worn the cloth shoes typical of country folks, and even if he agreed, the size might not fit.
“Let’s discuss this later. We shouldn’t keep Mr. Alvarez and the others waiting too long.”
Josiah believed that Lysander was concerned about him. Seizing the moment, he pulled out his phone and turned on the flashlight to illuminate the surroundings..

With the presence of light, the journey became much easier.
However, with every step he took, she could hear the squelching sound of water.

Lysander touched her nose, noticing his expressionless stroll. She had no choice but to quicken her pace with a few small jogs to catch up.
By the time they arrived at Blaine’s house, Blaine was already waiting outside the courtyard. Clustered nearby were villagers from the surrounding houses, all there to help entertain the guests and join in the festivities.
Life in the mountain village was secluded, so visitors from the city were a rare sight. Regardless of age or gender, everyone was curious to take a look.
As soon as Lysander and Josiah appeared, they became the center of attention in the crowd.
Blaine’s house was considered one of the better ones in the village. It was a brick house with red walls and green tiles, funded by the children who worked away from home. However, even so, it was not spacious. To accommodate so many people for a meal, tables could only be set up in the courtyard.
Blaine, wary of the crowd and fearing that Lysander and Josiah might find it unsanitary, said somewhat uncomfortably, “There are small tables inside the house. You can go there.”
“No need. It’s quite nice here.” Lysander pointed at the sky with a smile. “Eating while stargazing, city folks rarely get a chance to enjoy such a beautiful view.”
Blaine turned his gaze toward Josiah.
Josiah was also smiling. “Yes, we’ll eat right here. It’s more lively when we are all together.”
Hearing that, Blaine finally breathed a sigh of relief and led them toward the head seats.
In the courtyard, there was a large square table assembled from smaller tables of various colors. It was clear that they had been borrowed from different households. The table was generously laden with seven or eight dishes, and the tableware used was of varying types and sizes.
Everyone really pulled out all the stops to entertain their important guests, contributing everything they could from their own homes.
Lysander was deeply touched. After taking her seat, she first thanked Blaine, saying, “You’re being too kind. There’s so much food. We can’t possibly finish it all.”
Blaine had intentionally invited his wife, Anita Acevedo, to join him in entertaining. Upon hearing her words, the two elderly folks, who were both well into their years, waved dismissively in unison. “This is only right. Your arrival has brought so much to our village. If we were to hide and hoard, would that be proper?”
They were not the only ones feeling that way. The other villagers who came to help shared the same sentiments. They saw the guests settling down and brought over the fried cheese curds that were warming on the stove.
Lysander had incessantly reminded and specifically advised Blaine not to slaughter a chicken. He truly took her opinion to heart, but after much consideration, he felt it was inappropriate not to have any protein dishes. Therefore, he decided to use a few of the eggs he had saved up at home.

Blaine personally got up to serve them food, not forgetting to preheat the bowls with hot water before filling them.
“This can be considered a specialty dish from our region. It’s a fried dish. Although it’s simple, it’s quite warming when eaten during cold weather.”
Lysander quickly reached out with both hands to receive the food.
Josiah also stood up.
Seeing no change in her expression, he assumed the food tasted at most as simple as the lunch they had, so he picked it up and took a bite. Right after that, his smile froze momentarily.
In the countryside, cheese and eggs were considered delicacies, only enjoyed during the holidays. To show their hospitality toward important guests, the villagers would generously offer more than usual.
For the first time, Josiah experienced such a peculiar taste, both sweet and pungent, that it was nearly impossible to swallow. Yet, under the expectant gazes of the villagers, he steeled himself and swallowed the food.
The children gathered around had hardly any snacks to eat. Their eyes immediately lit up with anticipation when they saw the fried cheese curds.
The women who came to help were worried about their children appearing impolite in front of the guests. They all subtly signaled to them, hinting that they shouldn’t display their eagerness for food.
Lysander noticed this scene, feeling particularly unsettled. She gently suggested, “The two of us can’t possibly finish all these dishes. Why don’t we all sit down and eat together? It doesn’t feel right to watch you all bustling about.”
The villagers quickly responded, “No need! We’ve already prepared our own meals, and there’s another table nearby.”
Compared to the grand table that was painstakingly set, the smaller one next to it was not only narrower, but it also had much simpler dishes laid out. However, everyone smiled as they guided their children to take a seat there.
Lysander knew they meant well, but it wouldn’t be appropriate to dissuade them any further. Hence, she had no choice but to join Josiah, sitting together with the highly respected elders of the village.
Seeing the fried cheese curds before him, she knew he wasn’t accustomed to the taste. While Blaine and others weren’t looking, she subtly swapped her empty bowl with his.
Josiah noticed and asked her in a low voice, “What are you doing?”
Lysander had already placed the bowl of fried cheese curds before herself. “This is considered a delicacy in the village. If you don’t eat it, people might think they’re not being hospitable.”
Upon hearing these words, Josiah immediately switched back the bowls and was about to eat all of its
contents.
Upon seeing this, Lysander quickly stopped him. “If you really can’t stand the taste, don’t force yourself to eat it. I’ll handle it.”
“It’s all right. I can handle it.”

With a faintly sweet yet slightly gamey taste lingering in his mouth, Josiah couldn’t help but furrow his brows, his Adam’s apple bobbing slightly.
Lysander then offered him a serving of vegetables with her fork, which Josiah leaned over to eat directly.
