CHAPTER XLVIII
~~~
SOPHIA’S LIPS PARTED, and she stared at Lucas , wishing she could just disappear in order to run away from the hateful glare he was throwing her way. Was he really going to tell her the truth?
Chase growled behind her, snapping her out of her thoughts. “Lucas,”
Again, Lucas ignored Chase. He didn’t care again. He didn’t care if Chase would kill him. All he wanted was to make sure Sophia got the memo that he hated her so much. She had to know that she wasn’t meant to live. She should have it at the back of her mind that she was only living due to Chase’s favors and if she tried anything stupid, she’d be as good as dead. “You call us sinners? Your father has done a lot worse than we have ever done. I hate to say this, but trust me on this. Your father has taken innocent lives. He has raped a lot of helpless women. He has trafficked people and sold them out for money. He has used a lot of people for sex slaving. Would you like to know that all those helpers you’ve grown up to meet for those first eight years of your life were victims of human trafficking? To make it even more disgusting, Sophia, your mother knew all about this. She supported your father in whatever he was doing. She supported every decision he made like a woman of this world should have. Her fucking mistake was being so foolish to trust him because he impregnated a marri-,”
Everything happened so fast within the blink of an eye, and Lucas was interrupted by a hard shove from Chase.
Chase turned to face Sophia. “Take Charlie and go to your room,”
Sophia nodded, sniffed, and wiped the tears rolling down her cheeks with the back of her hand. She bent down to pick Charlie and scurried out of the kitchen, Lucas’ words not leaving her mind.
Once he was sure Sophia was out of earshot, Chase turned to you out of your fucking senses? You could have told her the truth,”
“She was being too nosy. She should mind her fucking business and be grateful for being let to live,”
Chase asked. “Because of that, you think she should know the truth?”
“It doesn’t matter if she knows again. I don’t care if she finds out that she’s my sister. I don’t give a flying shit about her,”
“She’s going to be broken, Lucas. It would destroy her if she knows all her father has done,”
Lucas scoffed. “She’s already broken, Don. You broke her,” He was trying so hard not to sound too protective of her.
Those particular words hit a nerve in Chase, and he curled his fists around Lucas’ hair, pulling him closer so he could sneer his words right on his face. “I am your Don and I demand respect but when it comes to Sophia, I don’t care about it. You won’t ever talk about her like that, Lucas. She is your sister and you don’t have the fucking right to talk like that about her. She’s innocent. She doesn’t know the whole truth so it would be best if we leave everything like that. Ignore and forget the fact that you said those words to her today. Sono chiaro?”
{“Am I clear?”}
Lucas matched Chase’s stare without blinking his eyes. Maybe Chase was right, and he had acted like that on impulse. He knew very well that there was a small-no tiny- part of his heart that had that brotherly love and instincts for Sophia but he still wanted to block it all out. “si, Don,”
{“Yes, Don”}
“Bene,” Chase muttered before letting go of Lucas’ hair.
{“Good”}
Sophia couldn’t sleep again. Even if she had taken milk, she wasn’t sure it would have calmed her. Not after seeing the look in Lucas’ eye, directed towards her.
She twisted and turned on the bed, clamping down on her lip to stop it from trembling and also to stop the tears in her eyes from falling.
“All that matters is that I’m here for you,”
Sophia sat up abruptly once those words rang in her head. She turned to look at her side and found Charlie sleeping there. She couldn’t wake up the poor cat.
Maybe she could meet Chase to help her out. Maybe he was right when he said he could calm her down.
Sophia got down from the bed and walked out of the room, barefooted until she got to Chase’s wing of the mansion. Immediately, she sighted him just as he was about to walk into his room.
“Chase,”
It couldn’t be her, right? Chase stopped and turned towards the direction where Sophia’s voice came from. True to his thoughts, she was there, standing and staring at him.
Chase pulled out the cigar between his lips. “What’s it?”
“I-,”
Chase motioned for her to come forward with two of his fingers, and Sophia did so. Once she was standing in front of him, he accessed her whole face, and that instant, he knew she was finding it hard to sleep. The redness of her eyes told him so. “Do you need anything?”
“I-I can’t-I couldn’t sleep so, I-,”
Chase raised a brow. “You want to stay with me?”
Sophia nodded. “I’m sorry if I disturbed you. I’ll just go back to my room,”
Just when she turned to leave, Chase gripped her arm and turned her to face him. “Did I say you disturbed me?”
Sophia shook her head. “I-,”NôvelD(ram)a.ôrg owns this content.
“Come,” He picked her up bridal style and stared into her eyes. “I don’t want you to ever think you’re disturbing me. Am I clear?”
Sophia nodded her head and wrapped her arms around his neck. “Y-yes,”
“Good,” He smiled at her.
Chase managed to open the door of his bedroom and walked in with her, shutting it with his foot before dropping the cigar he was holding on the ashtray. He slowly walked towards the large bed and dropped her on it. Once he was sure she was comfortable, he covered her body with the comforter and placed a peck on her forehead. “Sleep,”
