Chapter 541 Yareth Died With Regrets
Chapter 541 Yareth Died With Regrets
At ten in the evening, Jonathan took a break in the house where Yareth had lived before his death.
Torrence and the others had already returned to Yaleview with Mabel. Jonathan had a lot of matters to attend to, but he had to postpone them due to the mourning period. Recognizing that Jonathan needed time and space, Mabel and the others decided not to disturb him.
During this time, Beatrix took the opportunity to return to Lostaria to visit her master, Richard.
The dim yellow glow from the lights inside the house added to the antique ambiance, a setting Yareth had grown accustomed to and preferred. He did not favor bright lights, which was why the old house had become his favorite place.
Jonathan and Bruce were sitting and chatting in the parlor.
Bruce's graying sideburns made him look exceptionally old. “Mr. Jeremiah and the others are just having a hard time accepting Old Mr. Harrington's death, Mr. Lawson. I hope you won't hold it against them.”
Jonathan nodded and replied, “Mr. Parker, don't worry. No matter what they do, I won't hold it against them. I'll let it slide for the sake of Grandpa and Catherine.”
Bruce nodded, saying, “Now that Mr. Lawson is here, I believe Old Mr. Harrington can rest in peace.”
A pang of sorrow hit Jonathan hard. After a moment of silence, he turned and asked, “Mr. Parker, are there still no updates about Catherine?”
Sorrow flickered in Bruce's eyes. He shook his head and responded, “There's no news about her. Old Mr. Harrington has been constantly thinking about you and Catherine. It's a pity that he didn't get to see Catherine.”
Jonathan clenched his fists, saying, “It's all my fault. I failed to protect Grandpa and Catherine.”
“Please don't think like that, Mr. Lawson. How could you blame yourself? Old Mr. Harrington already knew this would happen about a year ago,” said Bruce.
A flash of deep regret and self-reproach crossed Jonathan's eyes, but in the end, he said nothing more.
Suddenly, something popped into Jonathan's mind. He asked, “By the way, Mr. Parker, how is Alicia? Is she all right?”
“She's now pursuing her studies in Ustrana. We've hired a maid specifically to take care of her. She's doing well, so don't worry about her, Mr. Lawson.” Bruce paused before adding, “Alicia is a very sensible child, and she also respects Catherine's decision!”
Jonathan nodded, then asked in detail for Alicia's address and contact information. He had made up his mind to visit her when he was free. After all, he had promised Lucille he would take good care of her. I owe my life to the Lunar Pendant, so I must never forget her kindness. We should always be grateful to people who have lent us a hand when we need assistance.
“So, Mr. Parker, what other plans do you have for the future?” Jonathan asked Bruce again. Text property © Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org.
Bruce replied, “Mr. Lawson, if you don't mind, I would like to stay here permanently. I don't have any
children, and now that Old Mr. Harrington is gone, I really don't know what to do.”
Jonathan nodded, saying, “I feel the same way. Mr. Parker. You've taken care of Grandpa all your life, so now let us take care of you. Before I go, I'll leave some money for you, so you don't have to worry about finances!”
Bruce was touched by his remark. “Mr. Lawson, you're indeed a kind and generous man.”
With a smile, Jonathan said, “I'm just doing what I should. If I fail to take good care of you, not only will I be unable to face Grandpa in heaven, but Catherine would also blame me!”
As the two were in conversation, a housekeeper entered and said, “Mr. Lawson, Bruce, sorry to interrupt. Mr. Jeremiah and Mr. Brendan have arrived. They wish to see you, Mr. Lawson.”
Jonathan froze for a moment before responding, “Please let them in.”
“All right, Mr. Lawson,” the housekeeper said before leaving the parlor.
Bruce turned to Jonathan with a worried expression, “Mr. Lawson, if they were to accidentally offend you, please, you mustn't—”
Jonathan interjected, “Don't worry, Mr. Parker, I understand.”
Bruce's unease lingered, prompting him to position himself slightly behind Jonathan. Jonathan allowed Bruce to assume his chosen spot.
After a while, Jonathan heard the sound of footsteps approaching.
He stood up and walked to the door to welcome Jeremiah and Brendan. As they saw Jonathan standing before them, their gazes were overwhelmed with mixed reactions.
“Jon.” Jeremiah sounded gentle.
Bruce was taken aback for a moment, wondering how Jeremiah had suddenly transformed into a completely different person.
Jonathan said, “Uncle Jeremiah, Uncle Brendan, please come in and have a seat.” His tone struck a balance between humility and confidence, neither overly warm nor unwelcoming.
His courteous invitation made Jeremiah and Brendan feel even more uneasy.
With everyone settled in their seats, Jonathan's demeanor stayed composed. He inquired, “Uncle Jeremiah, Uncle Brendan, what brings you here at this hour?”
Upon exchanging glances with Brendan, Jeremiah spoke. “Jon, we've decided to acknowledge you as the head of the family.”
Brendan chimed in, “From now on, your uncle and I will fully support you. We hope that you can put aside any unpleasantness that has occurred between us. Let's just let bygones be bygones.”
Bruce was left speechless. He could not fathom what Jonathan had done to make Jeremiah and Brendan, who usually carried themselves with pride and arrogance, lower their stance and speak to him in such a humble tone.
“The unpleasantness between us is not worth mentioning,” Jonathan said lightly, “Uncle Jeremiah, Uncle Brendan, don't worry. No hard feelings.” He paused, then continued, “Actually, I just feel a little upset.”
“Upset?” Jeremiah asked in puzzlement.
Brendan, too, had a flummoxed look on his face.
Jonathan laughed self-deprecatingly and said, “I feel sorry for Grandpa.”
“Jon, we don't quite understand what you're saying,” Brendan muttered hesitantly.
“Is that so? It makes sense you don't understand what I just said.” Jonathan stood up and continued, “I know why you came to see me today. It's simply because I've killed a few big shots from the Langeton family, and you're terrified. You're afraid that I might kill you, too, aren't you?”
Jeremiah and Brendan instantly turned pale. With a trembling voice, Jeremiah asked, “Did you really kill them?”
A sharp glint flashed in Jonathan's eyes as he replied, “You're right, Uncle Jeremiah. I killed them. But do you know why I had to?”
Bruce was momentarily stunned, but soon, a flash of approval crossed his eyes. The news was shocking, but Bruce quickly understood Jonathan's intentions.
Jonathan continued, “I killed them for you, Uncle Jeremiah and Uncle Brendan. In fact, I did that
primarily for Grandpa and the Harrington family's sake. I won't be staying here forever. Now that Grandpa has passed away, all the families will be eyeing us, trying to take us down. If I don't take drastic measures, who will suppress them for you after I leave? Who will ensure your safety? With the death of the Langetons, everyone will know that they came to cause trouble at the mourning hall today. Who would dare to offend the Harringtons again in the future when they learned that they died right after causing a scene?”
At this point, Jonathan cast a cold glance at Jeremiah and said, “Today, you questioned Grandpa, and he passed away, feeling upset. Do you know what he was thinking before he died? I'm sure he must have been utterly down-spirited because his sons don't understand his father! Grandpa knew a year ago that he only had one year left to live, so he arranged for Catherine and me to get married to protect you and the Harrington family. He appointed me as the head of the family, also to safeguard you all. Otherwise, who among you could handle the Langetons as it is today? It's a pity that you people dismissed the efforts Grandpa put in as worthless. He spent his whole life protecting you, and even in death, he made arrangements for your future. But Uncle Jeremiah and Uncle Brendan, have you ever truly understood Grandpa's intentions? I bet all this while, you just can't wait for him to die, can you?”
Bruce turned to Jonathan with a worried expression, “Mr. Lawson, if they were to accidentally offend you, please, you mustn't—”
Jeremiah and Brendan's faces turned deathly pale.
At that moment, Jeremiah's body began to tremble. He buried his face in his hands and started to sob uncontrollably.
Brendan's eyes also turned bloodshot, his face full of shame.
Jonathan's expression remained indifferent. Whether Jeremiah and Brendan were genuinely remorseful at this moment, or they were merely putting up an act, it no longer mattered to him anymore.
Jonathan stood up and declared, “I've done what I can and even did what I shouldn't do. From now on, you're on your own!” After saying that, he strode away from the Harrington residence.
Jeremiah and Brendan stood in silence, watching Jonathan walk away. After a long while, Brendan couldn't contain his curiosity any longer, “Where's he going? Doesn't he plan to stay with the Harrington family?”
Staring into the distance, Bruce replied, “Mr. Lawson's only intention is to protect the Harrington family. He has no desire to seize control of the family.”
Tears still glistened in Jeremiah's eyes as he asked, “What makes you say so?”
Bruce replied, “Mr. Jeremiah, what you deem important might be insignificant in the eyes of Mr. Lawson. With his capabilities, the wealth and power he desires are within easy reach. He has no need to take over the Harrington family!”
Some people might perceive an iPhone as valuable and important, but to some wealthy people, it was as ordinary as a bun in a bakery store.
Meanwhile, Jonathan took a stroll under the night sky instead of driving.
Under the vast expanse of the starry sky, he walked alone, surrounded by profound tranquility.
At this moment, Jonathan buried his anger and hatred deep within his heart.
When one lacks strength, engaging in discussions fueled by hatred and anger is an immature act. Jonathan vowed to gradually improve himself until the day he could kill Ignatius in front of Tristan. After that, he would capture Tristan, making him kneel and apologize at his mother's grave.
He would one day repay the hatred that Tristan had sowed in his heart years ago. I'll never forgive him. He'll reap what he sowed! A weakling talking about kindness and forgiveness is nothing but a display of cowardice. All things in this world are illusory and unpredictable. They are as ephemeral as dewdrops or a flash of lightning.
The next day, Jonathan gathered Mabel, Aurora, Torrence, Yeverie, and Walrion.
Walrion finally made it there last night.
Everyone convened for a meeting at Jeff's mansion, a place that was tranquil and secluded.
On the other hand, Jeff, a man with a jam-packed schedule, hurried off to attend to his numerous affairs.
Firstly, Jonathan confirmed all his storage rings could no longer function effectively, rendering them mere collectibles now.
The second matter was that Jonathan had given the Luminous Sword to Torrence. However, since the sword made traveling difficult, Torrence could not carry it everywhere. Therefore, Jonathan decided to keep it on his behalf temporarily.
The third matter was that they had arranged for Torrence to take up the identity of a Chanaean.
The fourth matter, which was also the main topic of the meeting, centered around devising strategies for reclaiming Eastsummer.
