I Once Married You (Harper and Benjamin)

Chapter 539

Chapter 539 Internal Strife

"I believe you, Benjamin, I really do. I know you have the skills and ability, but can you hear me out first?"

Larry felt like an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.

Seeing Benjamin fall silent, Larry hurriedly explained, "I admit, it was Annie's request that I couldn't refuse, but it's been days and Harper hasn't shown up. Don't you think the Martin family might start suspecting something? What if Sir Martin steps in and hurts himself? Right now, it's good that Mrs. Martin knows the situation. If you don't want Harper to leave just yet, let me speak to Mrs. Martin, alright?"

Benjamin didn't respond immediately, his deep-set eyes gazing into the distance, his face tense since hearing Harper's voice.

Nobody knew how he felt when he heard Harper's questioning.

Just thinking about it made his brow furrow, his noble aura turning noticeably colder as he said in a low voice, "It's not time yet. She's safer here than anywhere else."

Larry sensed Benjamin's displeasure and assured, "Don't worry, I know what to do."

After ending the call, Benjamin's absorbed expression remained unrelaxed for a long time.

Harper's questioning echoed in his ears; she must be blaming him.

Because of his promise to Benjamin, Larry had to be honest with Harper. She didn't ask why, nor did she understand why Benjamin was doing this.

But she didn't want to make things difficult for anyone, especially since Lily had just become furious after an argument with a bodyguard. If the argument escalated and something happened, she'd feel guilty.

So she conceded, "You all can go back. Don't worry about me, I'm fine here, just bored."

Lily wanted to say more, but Larry stopped her.

"Mrs. Martin, why don't we step out and let Annie talk with Harper?"

A resigned, apologetic look was in Lily's eyes, but thinking that the two friends hadn't seen each other for a long time, she finally nodded in agreement.

After Larry and Lily had left for the garden outside, Annie finally pulled Harper aside and asked, "Harper, what are you thinking? If you want to leave, expose that Benjaminas keeping you here. I can't believe he'll remain indifferent under the pressure of public opinion."

Harper shook her head. "I don't want to do that."

"Why not?"

Because of grandma and grandpa." Harper had seriously considered this. "Grandma's surgery is starting in a few days, and I don't believe,

Annie understood the Martin family's regard for Harper, so she was also in a dilemma for a moment.

She hugged Harper. "So, what do you need me to do for you?"

"Prepare a way out for me. If what they say is true, then there's no reason for me to stay with him."

Annie immediately understood her meaning.

She nodded without any attempt to dissuade her, only agreeing to do as she requested.

Harper was rational, and her words were not spoken lightly, so Annie didn't offer advice, just support, once Harper had made up her mind.

Harper walked Annie to the door, and they reluctantly let go of each other's hands.

She watched the three of them say goodbye and waited until their car left the villa before she turned and went back inside.

That Harper couldn't leave with

them didn't really stir much emotion

in her, especially compared to Benjamin, who would hang up the phone the moment he heard her voice, all of that seemed trivial.

She pressed her lips, a nameless sorrow welling up inside her.

She didn't know what the outcome of their relationship would be.

If only she could see the future, she wouldn't be so lost and helpless.

Regardless of the outcome, it would be better to be prepared mentally sooner rather than later.
