Redmption 259
Redmption 259
I realized how awful of a daughter I was right then. I only knew my parents died in a car crash but not how or why.
Bree's expression shifted slightly, and she held my wrist. "Maddie, didn't I say not to bring it up? It's in the past."
"I'm no longer a kid now, Bree. I can take the truth. Tell me, please." I held her hand.
Her fingers trembled slightly. "It's all history, Maddie. Why do you wish to bring it up?"
I stayed silent briefly before saying, "That's because they're my parents, Bree, my only family in this world."
My parents were orphans who grew up at the orphanage. Similarly, I became one when they left me.
My words probably pulled at her heartstrings, so it took her a second to recount the incident.
"Zack and I did go to the place of accident. By the time we
arrived, your mother had passed, while your father was hanging on his last breath. He grabbed Zack's hand and only uttered your name..."
Bree choked up, and I could feel my chest tightening. The incident was still a fresh wound to her despite how old it was. At that
moment, I understood why she refused to bring up the past. She was afraid of hurting me.
"We knew he wanted us to look after you because he cared a lot about you," she murmured.
I felt terrible triggering such sadness within Bree. However, I didn't bring this matter up for mourning. I suppressed my searing emotions and asked, “H did the car crash happen? Was it a collision?"
She sighed. "The car rear-ended a large tanker truck."
In my mind a similar scenario I had seen in
a video suddenly played, shrouding me in apprehension. My breath was thin as I asked, "Did the brakes malfunction? Was that what caused the accid
Bree pursed her lips. "I'm not too sure about that. Even the
driver passed away at the scene, and the car was completely totaled. The cause of the accident remains unclear."
"Not even Zack knows?" I remember him reacting rather emotionally when I asked last time.
"Well..." Bree seemed hesitant.
"Please just tell me, Bree." I carried

Her avoidance spiked my anxiety. “What is it that you can't tell me, Bree?”
Faced with my emotional state, she sighed and said, "I think... the
brakes malfunctioned."
"Didn't the driver check the car?" I asked.
She held my hand. "Maddie, the driver is dead."
In other words, I couldn't pin the blame on anyone, especially not on person. Besides, the

"Maddie, that's enough. Let's eat." Bree switched the topic.
But how could I eat after that? I knew Brandon's father couldn't have
been the culprit because he was investigating his death as well. But.... perhaps it was related to the
contract my dad was supposed to sign.
I looked at Bree again and asked, "Bree, do you know if my parents were working on a startup before their passings?"
She was about to place some food on my plate when her hands
trembled, causing her utensils to clatter to the ground. I looked at her skin, which was covered in goosebumps.
I couldn't ignore such a strange reaction. My heart dropped, and I could feel my scalp tingling. "Bree...
