Chapter 65: Is There Anything Behind
The second Mrs. Qin soon clarified everything in Qin Wen’s tone on the Internet. Song Meirong looked coldly at these with a fury in her heart.
“Yaoyao,”
The old man’s throat tightened. After a lifetime of prestige, he almost cried in front of a younger generation.
“I’m sorry, Shiyao,” Old Qin closed his eyes bitterly. He knew the Qins didn’t like Shiyao, but he never expected them to be a group of wolves!
“No, Grandpa, it’s not your fault!”
Shiyao was flustered by grandpa’s sadness.
You Ze immediately consoled him,
“Don’t worry, Grandpa. I will well protect Yaoyao.”
The old man closed his eyes without saying anything, his eyelids quivering, and Shiyao lowered the head, guilty for his sadness.
“It’s getting late, You Ze. Take Yaoyao back.”
“Grandpa…”
Old Qin waved. He needed some time alone. He didn’t care about Shiyao’s revenge on Qin’s family, because Qin Wen asked for it. He was very relieved that You Ze was by her side, but he couldn’t forgive himself for letting Shiyao suffer so much under his nose. He didn’t protect her….
You Ze kept whispering in Shiyao’s ear to comfort her as he forcibly took her away.
In the car Shiyao was sobbing sadly.
“It’s all right…” You Ze held her shoulders with sympathy. She came to revenge, but why she was sadder than when she came?
“Stop crying, Grandpa will know, okay?”
Wiping Shiyao’s tears away with his soft fingertips, You Ze pulled her into his arms, as if holding a child. Shiyao said nothing but cried all the way, her tears wetting his clothes.
When they were back home, Jiang Fengyi had gone to bed. You Ze crept into the room carrying Shiyao, fetched a basin of hot water from the bathroom, and carefully wiped her face with a warm towel.
“You’ve swollen eyes like the rabbit…” You Ze couldn’t help making fun of her softly. Shiyao angrily pinched him. You Ze immediately curled up with pain and fell on the bed.

Shiyao burst into a laugh and said in a heavily nasal voice.
“Humph, I’m trying to make you laugh!” You Ze went on to wipe Shiyao’s body gently and occasionally complained about her figure.
Then You Ze changed her dressing as usual, helped her put on pajamas, and went to the bathroom to have a wash.
“I can dress myself…”
Shiyao murmured. She just got some cuts on the leg and was not disabled, but You Ze always treated her as a helpless child and did everything for her.
“In my view, you are really a child.”
You Ze grinned as if he had seen through her. Annoyed, Shiyao blushed and rushed him into washing.
Shiyao held a pillow and carefully listened to the splash of water in the bathroom, lost in thought.
You Ze seemed to have formed a habit of providing attentive care and showing gentleness in every detail.
As a girl who was revengeful but had a sense of propriety, this was the first time for Shiyao to be so impulsive. She had expected a zero-sum ending between the Qins and her, and on the way she was worried about whether she would drag You Ze in this mess. But the result seemed to be beyond her imagination. You Ze must have concealed something from her!
The fireflies outside the window were scattered, and old Qin was lying in the cool chair. The servant carefully covered him with a blanket, but the blowing wind kept him coughing.
It was obvious to everyone that old Qin was partial to Shiyao, but no one knew why he loved her so much.
“Wan’er…”
The old man was holding a yellow wooden hairpin, which clearly showed the traces of life. With Shiyao’s and Lin Wan’s faces alternately appearing in front of him, the old man’s mouth was full of bitterness, as if he had swallowed a gulp of bitter wine.
Lin Wan, the first love of old Qin, met him when he was down and out. Lin Wan’s gentle but courageous temperament and insight helped him a lot in the process of starting from scratch.
Although life was tough, they loved each other and helped each other. In order to support her husband’s career, she even gave up having a child for the time being to take care of him.
Finally, old Qin succeeded and his career began to take off. With Lin Wan’s sacrifice in mind, his feelings for her not only remained, but also got deeper.
However, old Qin’s mother, a selfish woman, saw her son’s success and began to dislike Lin Wan for her poor family! She tried to find fault with Lin Wan and accused her of not having children. Lin Wan’s body was getting weaker and weaker.
As a good son, old Qin always secretly comforted Lin Wan, but didn’t stop his mother. Once when he was out on business, his mother went home with another woman in Lin Wan’s presence and claimed that this woman would be her new daughter-in-law. Even in the presence of outsiders, she often bossed Lin Wan about, as if she was a servant.
Lin Wan’s parents were teachers who were not rich but brought her up well. Too proud to bear any grievance, she left Qin Zheng a letter and a Divorce Agreement, and then left alone.
When old Qin came back, he didn’t see Lin Wan but a Divorce Agreement. He immediately understood that it was his mother’s idea. After a big fight, he went looking crazily for Lin Wan, but was called back by his mother with the excuse of illness. Then he was tricked into having a night with another woman. That woman was Qin Shaofeng’s deceased mother.
A few months went by and the woman was pregnant. His mother persuaded him to sign the Divorce Agreement and remarry the woman.
A year later, he saw Lin Wan by chance in the street. There was a strange man with her and a baby in her arms. They talked and laughed, happy and sweet. Qin Zheng ran away. It was supposed to be a happy reunion, but he was afraid to face Lin Wan.
She looked happy with her new life, and he was also a father. No matter whether he loved his current wife, the past was over, and he should live in the present.
For many years thereafter, he kept sending people to secretly inquire news of Lin Wan. How was her life? She gave birth to another daughter; they quarreled and then made it up. The little things in her life were very precious to Qin Zheng.
Old Qin was playing chess with his grandson at home when Lin Wan passed away. Shocked by the bad news, he knocked over the chessboard. He rushed to her funeral, but it was too late to say goodbye to her.
Shiyao’s mother was grieved deeply, with the baby Shiyao in her arms. Old Qin recognized her as Shi Nian, who had just been driven out by Qin’s family!
Old Qin had a serious illness after coming back with a mixed feeling of happiness and sadness. His son slept with Lin Wan’s daughter and they had a daughter, and worse still, his son was married, so Shi Nian had been labeled as a home-wrecker for many years. Old Qin knew that she was not the one to blame, but his lustful eldest son, who forced Shi Nian to be with him, and put the responsibility on Shi Nian when they were exposed.
