Joe said, “The ring belonged to Vera. She must have accidentally dropped it here when she came over last night.”
Joe felt a dull ache forming in his head.
The moment Skylar asked him, his mind went blank for an instant. But soon after, memories rushed back.
When Skylar heard it was Vera’s ring, she suddenly recalled a time in Fachington when they had dinner at a hotel restaurant. Vera had been wearing an emerald ring then.
It had looked familiar, but when Skylar tried to get a better look, Vera had hidden the ring under her sleeve.
Noticing the change in Skylar’s expression, Joe asked, “Is this ring a negative item?”
“I’m not sure yet. I don’t sense any negative energy from it, but there’s something off about it,” Skylar replied, shaking her head.
This ring was different from the negative items she had encountered before, and she couldn’t quite grasp what it truly was.
Joe’s expression darkened. “When I picked up the ring, I felt my thoughts slipping away. It was like a voice kept telling me I should return to Vera and choose her as my lifelong partner. That voice wouldn’t leave my head, and I tried to argue, but no words would come out.”
Before he could finish, he inadvertently glanced at his watch. When he saw the time, his expression changed dramatically. “Is it really 10:30 pm?”
“Yeah, it’s 10:30 pm,” Skylar confirmed. She glanced at the clock, which indeed showed the time.
After that, she continued examining the ring.
Joe’s expression turned serious when he saw the time. He furrowed his brow and said, “If I told you I’ve been sitting here fighting against that voice since I found the ring at 6:00 pm, would you believe me?”
Four hours had passed. Until he checked the time, he thought only a few minutes had passed.
He had heard that negative items could confuse one’s mind, and while he knew some people had been affected by them, he never imagined he would experience it firsthand. Now, he understood just how insidious these items could be.
“I believe you. You’re impressive. From what you described, this ring has a significant influence on you, and it’s rare for someone to resist its temptation like you have.” Skylar praised Joe sincerely.
Joe raised an eyebrow at her compliment, his expression still serious. “What do you mean when you say you’re unsure if it’s a negative item?”
“It’s probably because my abilities aren’t strong enough to determine its nature right now. I’ll take a closer look. If it is a negative item, then it must have been tampered with,” she replied solemnly. Content is property of NôvelDrama.Org.
Joe nodded in agreement. “I think it’s likely that it’s been tampered with. It’s a negative item.”
“Do you know who gave this ring to Vera? Can you ask her about it?” Skylar inquired as she examined the ring more closely.
Joe said, “It should be Molly.”
Skylar wasn’t surprised to hear that it was Molly. Joe had been investigating Molly for a while now. However, she hadn’t expected Vera, who had suffered from an encounter with a negative item recently, to
still have the audacity to accept such an antique from someone else, not knowing whether it was dangerous or not.
It was incredibly reckless of her. Or perhaps Vera knew it was a negative item and still chose to accept it.
“I’m close to finding out who’s backing Molly. I’ve recently uncovered some clues,” Joe added. Skylar suddenly thought of Viola. If they could find out who was behind Molly, it would certainly benefit Viola.
“Do you know that this ring was meant to target you?” Skylar asked cautiously.
She didn’t want to sow discord, but the ring’s significant impact on Joe indicated that Vera’s intentions were clearly directed toward him.
“Yeah, I know,” Joe replied, his voice calm but with an unmistakable coldness.
