Chapter 0522
Chapter 0522
Alex himself could not help but despise his own despicableness.
It was already deep into the night, and he looked at the ink-blue sky outside the window, a hint of confusion passing through his eyes.
-
Candice had already made things very clear the night before, and she had thought that Alex would leave.
However, when she woke up in the morning, she saw that breakfast was already set on the table, and there was activity in the kitchen.
Alex brought out the last set of breakfast and glanced at Candice, who seemed normal, with a faint nasal tone in his voice. "Let's have breakfast. I made it while wearing a mask."
Candice was about to speak when her phone suddenly rang. It was from Darius.
She glanced at Alex, then placed Ellis on the sofa and went to answer the phone. After Darius talked to her about some work matters, he changed the subject and asked, "Is Alex with you?"
Candice hesitated. "Yes." Text property © Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org.
Darius said, "He seems to be in the mood to come and find you now."
Candice could not discern his tone and did not know how to respond.
She hung up and returned to the dining room, only to see Alex heating milk for Ellis.
His expression was very serious, almost as if he were dealing with something very important. Candice saw that he was holding a phone in his left hand and a thermometer in his right hand,
measuring the temperature of the milk.
Meanwhile, Ellis was watching his back, smiling with her mouth wide open.
Candice looked at Ellis, then walked over, took the milk from Alex, and quickly heated it before feeding it to Ellis.
Alex watched her skillful movements, hesitated for a moment, and then explained, "I read online that milk shouldn't exceed 60 degrees, so I wanted to measure the temperature."
Ellis had already started drinking from the bottle, so Candice went straight to the kitchen to make herself a cup of coffee. "I'll be going to the office later. I'll also ask Mrs. Robinson to come over and take care of things."
What she meant was that Alex could leave.
Alex was stunned for a moment before saying with a nod, "Very well."
Candice finished breakfast and contacted Mrs. Robinson only to be told that she had gone on vacation because they had agreed she would not work on weekends.
Feeling conflicted as Darius had just called to inform her of a project that needed immediate attention, Candice looked at Ellis.
Sensing her dilemma, Alex set down his knife and fork and said softly, "I can wait for you to come back before I leave."
Candice looked at him, her eyes filled with suspicion.
A hint of bitterness flashed across Alex's face. "I'm her father..."
He paused halfway through his sentence, almost as if he realized he had said the wrong thing, and he glanced at Candice subconsciously.
Candice's eyebrows twitched, but she did not react strongly. It was a fact that Ellis was Alex's daughter.
Alex's pitch-black pupils looked at her, his gaze deep and tranquil. After a while, he said, "There are some things I don't know how to explain to you. You're right, I kept it from you. I'm a jerk. But I can assure you, when I found out about Ellis, I was happier than anyone else, and I never once thought of hurting either of you."
Alex spoke slowly. He rarely explained himself to anyone, but facing Candice's distrustful eyes, he felt like his throat was being constricted, making it difficult to breathe.
"When I was in Dorrington, I didn't know he would lay a hand on you, and I didn't know he would use my name to sign that consent form..."
Alex thought of the surgery consent form that had been handed to him with his name written on it glaringly, and he felt unbearable discomfort.
Even he felt angry and panicked when he saw such a thing, let alone what Candice's reaction would have been when she was deceived into signing it.
