Chapter 199

Chapter 199

Candice hesitated slightly. Her encounters with Alex had not been pleasant, and he had only just

terminated her that morning.

She pursed her lips, suppressing the urge to turn and escape.

Unable to sense the undercurrents between them, Dr. Brooks, hearing his phone ring, picked it up and

said. “If you still want to consult Dr. Sul, you can try seeking Mr. Elysian’s help. If you’re considering

other doctors, I can also recommend some for you.” He turned to Alex. “Mr. Elysian, I didn’t mean to

imply that you must do anything. It’s just that this young lady has been handling her grandfather’s

matters. Please don’t take offense.”

Dr. Brooks finished speaking and then went outside to answer the phone.

Only Candice and Alex remained in the office.

Candice kept her eyes lowered, but she could still feel Alex’s gaze on her.

There wasn’t much to say. Candice knew it was unlikely that Alex would offer to help. There was no

need to embarrass herself once again.

Thinking of Alex’s previous demands, Candice could not help but feel bitter. She took a deep

breath and turned to leave.

However, before she could take a single step, Alex’s voice, cool and melancholic, echoed slowly. It

seems that your grandfather’s well–being isn’t as important as it appears. Candice, your ridiculous

pride always appears at the wrong time.”

Candice’s steps faltered. She turned to face Alex, and straightened her back, meeting his gaze. “Is it

my ridiculous pride, or have you not seen enough of me being a clown in front of you? Alex, I really

don’t have time to play these meaningless games with you anymore.”

“Meaningless games?” Alex’s dark eyes showed no emotion as he looked down at Candice. “It’s you

who failed to seize the opportunity.”

Candice stared at him.

For the first time, she felt Alex was shameless.

Was his idea of seizing the opportunity letting herself be manipulated like a toy, obediently enduring his

humiliation?

Candice closed her eyes and spoke softly. “I don’t know what you want from me, but can you stop

being so unreasonable and causing trouble at a time like this?

“You wanted me to move out, so I did. You wanted me to leave Aether, and I left. If there’s still

something about me that doesn’t satisfy you, can you wait until my grandfather gets better to

discuss it?”

She genuinely did not have the energy to deal with these matters now. She was already hanging on by Content © NôvelDrama.Org 2024.

a thread. And she was afraid that at any moment, that thread might snap.

Every night was mostly filled with insomnia, her nerves on the brink, and she could only stare at

the ceiling in a daze.

“Unreasonable and causing trouble?” Alex squinted, repeating Candice word–for–word. He

sneered. “Do you even have the right to say such words?”

Candice clenched her fists slowly. She stared at Alex with a dark expression for a moment, then

turned and left.

“Chad will be staying in Dorrington for the next few days.” Alex’s tone was calm, filled with his

usual arrogance. He stared at Candice’s fragile figure, a hint of a peculiar emotion flashing in his eyes.

He tapped his fingers twice subconsciously as he spoke in a low voice. “Candice, you know

I have little patience.”

Candice stood still, her body trembling slightly. Alex’s words seemed to imply that she would

inevitably come back to beg him.

Distressed, she returned to the ward and, as usual chatted with her grandfather for a while before

preparing to leave.

Before she left, she saw the nurse bringing in a plate of fruit.

“Dr. Brooks said that Mr. Sundance can have some regular food now,” the nurse explained. “He even

had a small bowl of porridge tonight, so I prepared some fruit for him.” The nurse handed the plate to

Candice. “Don’t worry. I cut the fruit into the smallest pieces and they are all fresh and

clean.”

Candice checked and found no problems.

She went downstairs and passed by Dr. Brook’s office, but Alex was no longer there.

The rain had eased up significantly, and when she arrived at the villa, Nadia and others were still

playing games in the living room.

She did not see Hanley, and Ryan mentioned that he was in the study working on design drafts.

After such a busy day, Candice did not stay downstairs for long and went back upstairs to rest.

She had been having poor sleep lately and was afraid of disturbing Nadia, so she had arranged a

small room for herself.

Returning to her room, she took out her phone again, opened the bank notification, and stared at the

considerable sum of money.

After a while she searched online for several well–known neurologists in Dorrington. Although

they might not be as famous as Chad, their experience seemed promising.

Candice took screenshots of the information about these doctors and sent them to Dr. Brooks, who

replied promptly.

Of the four doctors Candice sent him, two of the doctors were currently attending academic

conferences in other cities, one was primarily focused on academic work and only held consultations at

the hospital on Wednesdays.

And the last one, the director of the Silverstone Hospital, was currently abroad for further studies

and might return in a few days.

“If the patient’s condition remains stable, waiting for Dr. Zachman to return should be fine, unless

there’s a sudden change,” Dr. Brook responded.

Considering her grandfather’s stable condition over the past few days, Candice felt a bit more

relieved.

She paused for a moment, subconsciously reaching for the pillow to find the peace charm that her

grandfather used to give her.

Candice used to fall sick easily when she was young, so Joe would buy a talisman for her to put it

underneath her pillow, saying that it could help disperse any illnesses.

It had been many years, but she still kept the habit.

However, when she reached under her pillow nothing was there.

Her heart skipped a beat, and she suddenly remembered that she used to get a new talisman every

year. Her grandfather used to ask her to return the old talisman to the temple for blessings.

This year, when her grandfather gave her the talisman, she was busy with work and had not had the

time to return home with it. She had been called back to the office for overtime just after

receiving it.

Candice’s gaze turned inward.

She had no choice. She could only call Kayla, briefly explaining the situation and ask her to go to

the office tomorrow to find the item.

“I can help you find it now.” Kayla offered. “I’m still in the office.”

“Why are you still at the office so late?”

Kayla took the opportunity to complain. “Candice, you don’t know, but Sonia returned to the Secretary’s

Office again. She had been hanging out in the President’s Office all the time, and today she came

back. The moment she got back, she made a mistake in a document, and now we’re all helping her fix

it.”

Candice was not too interested in hearing about Sonia, and instructed Kayla to help her find her

talisman and ended the call.

That night, Candice fell asleep and woke up a couple of times, feeling groggy.

It went on till early morning when she was thoroughly awakened by the sound of the phone

ringing.

She groped around for her phone. The caller ID was Dr. Brooks. Candice sat up straight.
