Chapter 651
Chapter 651
"Yeah, guys like him, living off women, probably only see the ones with deep pockets and killer looks."
He must have done his homework on me, probably even considered making a move.
"What do you think I want from you?" I asked, my tone dripping with sarcasm.
John met my gaze directly. "It's about Deborah, right?"
So he did know about my close ties with Deborah Walker, and I didn't deny it. "Yes, I want to know what you've done to her. Beyond what you've told the cops, is there anything else?"
"Ms. Hudson, I'm under no obligation to answer you," John had the audacity to set conditions at a time like this.
"And what would it take for you to talk?" I asked bluntly.
Here he was, a prisoner, as if he had any use for money. Yet, he brazenly held up two fingers.
I chuckled, "Aren't you worried about stacking blackmail on top of your other charges? Plus, even if I handed over the cash, where would you even spend it?"
His expression grew serious, "Not for me, for my parents."
His words caught me off guard.
The guy was no good, but you've got to hand it to him-the way he loved his parents was something else.
"I doubt they'd even accept it if I went to offer them the money," my comment made John face reality.
After a moment, he spoke up, "I didn't do much to Deborah, just tricked her into getting me some cash."
As if I'd believe him. "If it was just that, why did she take her own life?"
John hung his head, remaining silent.
"If you want someone to look after your parents, you'd better come
clean. I bet your actions have already tarnished your parents' reputation, probably got them treated like outcasts," I wasn't aware of his parents' situation but could
only imagine.
John's eyes snapped up to mine, "You've seen my folks? Are they being harassed? Damn it, once I'm out, I'll take down those bastards..."
He was visibly agitated, almost jumping up until a warning shout from a nearby officer calmed him down. This is property © NôvelDrama.Org.
"I haven't seen your parents, but the mess you've made speaks for itself," I reminded him.
Dustin Wagner had told me about his debts and scams. It was clear he'd conned everyone he could.
Running a hand through his hair in frustration, John pleaded, "Ms. Hudson, know you're wealthy. Help me clear the debt I owe to relatives, let my parents hold their heads high. I'll owe you big time when I get out."
I wasn't about to take him up on that offer.
My silence was my refusal. Though his devotion was commendable, his parents weren't innocent in this. They had a part in his upbringing, after all.
I had money, yes, but it was reserved for those who truly deserved it.
"If you're not willing to help, why should I tell you anything? Get lost," John's last word echoed as he stormed off.
"Hey, did you pressure Deborah into doing something?" I shouted at his back as he walked away.
John paused momentarily, then continued walking away.
Leaving the detention center, I headed to Goldbridge that evening to find Deborah. Following the address, I arrived at a rundown rental block. Navigating through the dilapidated pathways, I was searching for Deborah's unit when a ruckus nearby caught my attention.
Three burly men were pounding on a
rusty door of one of the units,
ne
shouting, "Come out, you coward! If you don't pay up today, we're breaking this door down."
A chill ran down my spine, fearing it was Deborah. Without a second thought, I rushed towards the commotion.
