Chapter 142 A Change of Mind

Avery stared at the large chunk of meat in her bowl, unsure of what to say.

Carl and Randy, who were still growing, praised Lois's cooking skills.

Noticing that she didn't eat, Frank explained, "The ingredients on the island are limited, so you'll have

to make do."

Carl bit his lip and, though reluctant, put his portion of meat into Avery's bowl.

"Avy, you look pale and should eat more."

Avery's heart ached even more as she looked at the pile of meat in her bowl.

For someone lacking love, even the slightest kindness could light up her world.

"I'm sorry. I'm not hungry. You guys enjoy your meal."

Avery held onto Ethan and left. In winter, the island seemed even more desolate in the pale moonlight.

Before long, someone sat down beside her. It was the taciturn Frank.

"If you're hungry later, you can't find any food."

"I know, but I'm really not hungry."

The man took out a piece of mousse cake from behind, which had been slightly deformed from the

bumpy journey.

"You must be unaccustomed to the food in the mountains. These should suit your taste."

Avery didn't refuse. Instead, she let the sweet and sour taste of the strawberry spread across her

tastebuds.

"Are people here always so hospitable to hostages?" she whispered.

"You're a guest rather than a hostage."

Frank propped himself by putting his hands on the ground. Gazing at the moon, he muttered, "I know

you look down on us. In the eyes of pampered ladies like you, we're dirty souls. But even so, we still

live on, fighting against all odds."

"No, I never look down on you. Frank, we need to talk."

The man gazed at her and said, "Alright."

Avery picked up the yawning child and got up. "I'll put him to bed first."

As soon as they entered the room, Carl brought in hot water. "Avy, Lois said people from the city value

cleanliness, so we boiled some hot water for you."

Avery smiled gently. "Thank you."

"No worries. We may not have delicious food, but we have enough water."

Carl secretly took out a piece of chocolate from his pocket and continued, "I took this earlier. It's so

tasty. Since you haven't had dinner, you must be hungry. Please have it, and don't tell Randy."

Hearing footsteps, Carl hurriedly stuffed the chocolate into Avery's pocket. The newcomer was Randy,

with a thick blanket in his arms.

"It's cold at night. Lois asked me to give you an extra blanket. Let me make the bed for you."

Met with her silence, he quickly explained, "It's made of wild cotton that Lois picked and sewed. It's

been washed clean and is very warm. It's not dirty."

"I know. I'm just grateful."

Avery patiently put Ethan to sleep. After leaving his parents, the boy was surprisingly well-behaved by

her side. He hadn't cried once, and he soon fell asleep.

Carrying a small lamp, Avery left the room. Frank was still waiting for her.

His clothes were thin, but he didn't seem to feel the cold at all.

Avery turned off the lamp and sat beside him, wrapping her down jacket tightly around her.

"After spending a day here, I really like the island. Although it's not big, the residents here are all

simple. You aren't bad people."

Half of Frank's face was hidden behind a mask, and a self-deprecating smile tugged at his lips. "Isn't a

kidnapper demanding ransom considered bad?" Belongs © to NôvelDrama.Org.

Avery's gaze remained firm. "I've changed my mind."
