No matter what Rowan thought, Minerva didn’t want to delve deeper.
Rowan said in a deep voice, “I’m genuinely concerned about you, Minerva. Even though we broke up, it doesn’t mean we can’t be friends. You don’t need to be so hostile toward me.”
For some reason, he had been reminiscing about their time together lately. When they were together, he felt at ease. And sometimes, he found himself recalling those passionate moments they shared.
Minerva scoffed lightly. “I’m someone who sees things in absolutes. We broke up because you were still very much in love with the one you deemed your true love, and I accepted the breakup. We will never have anything to do with each other again, let alone be friends.
“From now on, act like a stranger when you see me. Otherwise, Jenny will get upset when she sees you here like this. I don’t want to deal with any unnecessary drama.”
“Minerva, we don’t need to be so confrontational. I never meant to hurt you.” Rowan frowned as he noticed how she looked at him, as if he were a stranger.
He felt an emptiness growing in his heart under her indifference.
Rowan desperately wanted to hold on to something–perhaps even hold Minerva. At that moment, he didn’t want her to leave.
Minerva seemed to find his words amusing. “You never intended to hurt me? Rowan, are you playing a childish game here? You committed to marry me, then got entangled with Jenny. I hear you two are living together now.
“Surely, you must have made plenty of promises to her. Can you just come to my place and be honest for once? Our engagement hasn’t even been called off yet. How can you have the nerve to waste my time and youth like this?”
She was ready to be honest and open, tired of maintaining a false front. She felt particularly irritable that day and wanted to confront the issue head–on.
It was time for a serious discussion.
Her words took Rowan aback.
Minerva had always been the picture of grace and refinement in Rowan’s eyes. A woman of education. and society, she rarely raised her voice or spoke harshly.
During their relationship, he had sometimes thrown tantrums, but she had always remained calm and gentle.
Now, witnessing her anger and profanity, he was reminded of their more intimate moments. When he had pushed her too far, she had retaliated with bite marks on his shoulder and scratches from her sharp nails. It wasn’t that she couldn’t be angry. It was just that she had hidden her true self from him.
Rowan felt uncomfortable and said, “You don’t have to be so harsh, Minerva. I never meant to waste your time or youth. It’s just… I’m not sure how to break this news to your family.”
Minerva’s tone was filled with contempt. “Those excuses might fool naïve girls, but not me, Rowan. I’ve noticed you’re leaving yourself a way out. You plan to take Jenny back to your family and wait for me to Initiate the breakup so you can escape blame from both sides. You’ve thought this through, haven’t you? I
must have underestimated you.”
Their time together seemed to have been a complete waste.
Rowan’s expression darkened. “After all this time, do you really think I’m capable of such a thing? I haven’t considered everything yet. I promise I’ll visit your family in the next few days to explain everything. I won’t let you take any blame from them, I swear.
Mínerva’s expression softened slightly. “Let’s set a time.”
“You’re… in such a hurry?” Rowan noticed that Minerva had truly moved on. Her indifference toward their engagement made him feel a strange discomfort.
Minerva raised an eyebrow. “Of course, don’t let this interfere with you and Jenny being together openly. And I can’t have it stop me from seeing other people either.”
“Other people? You mean… You actually like someone?” Rowan’s expression changed.
Minerva didn’t want to say much more to him. After being hurt once, she had no intention of being hurt again. Instead, she wanted to focus on her career and escape the arranged marriage her family was trying to force on her.
But since Rowan had asked, she decided to play along and nodded. “Yes, I do.”
At her words, Rowan’s expression shifted once more. She actually had feelings for someone else.
