Her apology was heartfelt because she felt that the person she had let down the most in her life was Edmund.
Edmund was the most outstanding descendant of the Chivers family, possessing noble character and integrity.
If he hadn't met her, he would have certainly accomplished great things.
With his abilities, he would've surely upheld the Chivers family's honor and elevated them to a higher level, making them stand shoulder-to-
shoulder with the Luther family.
But now, all the hopes and expectations of Yoel and Gwendolyn had been completely destroyed by her.
If Edmund had never met her, he would probably have had a successful career and plenty of children by now.
Alas, he encountered her and was tricked by her. His vow to never get married shattered all hopes for the Chivers family.
At times, she wondered what kind of feelings Edmund must harbored for her to make such a declaration. He must've loved me very deeply.
The love was so profound and beyond her reach that even a lifetime of devotion wouldn't be enough to repay or reciprocate his feelings.
Gwendolyn looked at her with reddened eyes, her expression a complex mix of emotions. Just judging by this young lady's character, she's
unquestionably good, and I feel a connection with her. Yet, fate can be playful. The heavens bestowed such good fortune upon Chivers Group Property © 2024 N0(v)elDrama.Org.
but did not grant the two the chance to stay together. What's even more frustrating is that she is in love with the Chivers family's nephew,
leaving us with no room to fight for her. If I incite my son to interfere in their relationship, it would lead to an infighting. Regardless of who
wins in the end, both sides will suffer losses and live in regrets. Moreover, this girl and my nephew have three children together, and they
deeply love each other. How can I dishonor the Chivers family's ancestors by goading my son into doing such a thing?
“Bay, you're here.” The gentle voice of Edmund reached Gwendolyn's ears, pulling her back from her wandering thoughts and breaking the
awkward atmosphere in the room.
Bailey subconsciously turned her head and saw Edmund coming in through the side door, pushing a wheelchair.
The main entrance had steps and a threshold, which made it inconvenient for him as he was in a wheelchair.
This side door must have been specially opened by the Chivers family for him, leading directly to the front garden outside.
Edmund was a proud man. Having bodyguards carry him in and out every day would be a severe blow to his self-esteem.
Yoel and Gwendolyn understood their son, fearing that he might overthink because of that, so they tactfully handled the situation in a way that
preserved his dignity.
The moment Bailey saw him, her eyes slowly reddened, a mist of tears welling up in her gaze.
Edmund turned his head toward Gwendolyn, smiling as gently as he always did. “Mom, Bay came over at this time, so she probably hasn't
had lunch yet. Have the kitchen prepare a few dishes she likes. We can't let our guest go hungry when she comes over.”
Gwendolyn gave her son a significant look, sighed silently, and as she turned around, she discreetly wiped away the tears at the corner of her
eyes.
She bore no resentment, yet she was somewhat bitter. She resented the way fate played with people, pairing two perfectly matched individuals
yet denying them a future together.
After watching Gwendolyn leave, Bailey let out a gentle sigh, striding over to the side door. She stopped in front of Edmund and slowly
crouched down. “Let me take a look at your leg.”
After she finished speaking, she carefully rolled up his pant leg.
The muscles on Edmund's right leg had fully recovered and no longer resembled the bare bones of a few months ago.
Bailey gently prodded the newly grown muscle with her fingertips, asking, “Does it hurt?”
Edmund shook his head with a smile. “It doesn't hurt. You don't need to be so cautious. You can apply a bit more force.”
Bailey finally breathed a sigh of relief.
If pressing the muscle didn't hurt, it meant the bone inside had healed.
As long as his bones were intact, she was confident she could help him stand again.
How could she bear to see Edmund, a man as proud as he was, confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life?
Given his temperament, if his leg didn't heal, he might stay within the Chivers residence for the rest of his life.
She had let down his affection and captured his heart. She couldn't trap his physical being too, causing him to suffer endlessly in that confined
space.
Gradually, she applied more strength to her hand.
The muscles were relaxed and lacked elasticity due to lack of exercise. If he walked more, the muscles would firm up in a few months.
Seeing that the surface had recovered well, Bailey couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief. “It's mostly healed now. Next, I will specifically
conduct rehabilitation for you. Some bones in your leg were shattered, but I have since replaced them with artificial ones. Even though the
artificial bones have merged with your body, they're still not a part of your body, so it's difficult to control. Nevertheless, that's okay. Trust me.
I will use acupuncture to stimulate the nerves and muscles in your legs, and we will treat your legs gradually.”
Edmund gave a light smile. “Okay. Since you said we would be treating my legs gradually, there's no need to rush. You've just returned and
haven't gone home yet, right? Have dinner here with me, then go back and rest for a few days.”
Bailey reached out and held Edmund's hand, speaking softly. “Let me accompany you for a walk. You must be curious about my experiences
abroad these past few months. I'll tell you about it, bit by bit.”
“All right, then.”
As Bailey gently guided him back through the side door, she spoke while walking. “Mrs. Chivers is upset. I have indeed failed to live up to the
care she once gave me.”
Edmund gently patted the back of her hand, resting on the wheelchair handle. His voice was gentle as he said, “Don't overthink. Mother has
lived a long life, and she understands. She's just unsure how to face you. Give her some time. Once she's come to terms with it, I assure you,
she'll be just like she used to be.”
“Edmund, I—”
“Don't apologize and don't feel guilty, or else you're just making me angry for no reason.”
Choked with emotion, Bailey turned her face away slightly, allowing the tears to slide down from her eyes.
Edmund gave a smile, pointing to the gazebo not far away. “I've brewed some coffee. Let's go have a taste.”
“Okay.”
Meanwhile, inside the study of the Luther residence, Gerald leaned back on the couch, squinting at his two sons sitting across from him.
He asked, “Which one of you is going to take over the Luther family business? Do you have any idea? Ever since the two of you stirred up
those incidents, the forces within the family have been getting restless. If you both don't step in to suppress it, I fear there will be internal strife
within the Luther family.”
Simon hastily spoke up. “The Luther family still looks to Artemis for decisions. Previously—”
Before he could finish speaking, Artemis suddenly interrupted, “We'll proceed as we decided a month ago. Announce my abdication to the
public and let Simon take over to become the new head of the Luther family.”
Simon was taken aback. “Artemis, we had a clear agreement before. I would only borrow the position of family head to pursue my wife. Once
I've won her over, I would immediately—”
Artemis didn't give him a chance to continue speaking. He waved his hand and said, “Let's settle it this way. Bailey hasn't returned yet. I'll go
pick her up. You can discuss the succession matters with Dad.”
Having said that, he stood up and headed straight for the door.
Simon stared at his retreating figure, belatedly realizing he had been duped.
“D-Dad, don't tell me Artemis is trying to pin the responsibilities on me?”
Gerald sighed silently.
He finally understood. Artemis was simply taking advantage of Simon's gullibility, setting a trap for the latter to step into. “The facts are lay
bare before us now. Is there still room for doubt?”
