Chapter 979 The Last Shred Of Value
Catherine could have easily evaded the incoming slap, but on second thoughts, she ultimately
abandoned the notion of avoiding it.
With this slap, the mother-daughter bond between them would come to an end. From this point onward, Property belongs to Nôvel(D)r/ama.Org.
she would no longer grieve over familial bonds.
Five seconds later, the pain she anticipated still hadn't materialized.
She instinctively glanced upward, only to see her mother's arm frozen in mid-air.
It wasn't that she had a sudden surge of conscience and couldn't bring herself to follow through.
Instead, a powerful arm had shot out from behind Catherine, intercepting the older woman's limb.
Then, a cold and aloof voice resonated from above her head. “Mrs. Rogers, owing to your seniority, I
will let this slide, but I hope you can be more mindful of your actions in the future. Don't resort to
physical violence each time. Catherine is no longer the daughter of the Rogers family, but the matriarch
of the Luther family. Given the international standing of both our families, even if you don't bow and
grovel at my wife's feet, you should, at the very least, show her the respect she deserves.”
Once he had finished speaking, he abruptly pushed her hand away.
Stephanie, being a coddled noblewoman, was in no condition to endure the vigorous push from Simon,
especially considering the anguish of losing her son she was currently suffering.
Almost immediately after he released her, she staggered backward and collapsed directly onto the
bench behind her.
With trembling fingers, she pointed at Catherine, her voice quivering as she spoke, “I've heard that the
Luther family is mounting a full-scale assault out there, and it's all because of you. You've brought
trouble into this family! Catherine, how can you be so shameless and ungrateful? To appease this man,
you've actually forsaken the family that raised you for twenty years. You're truly malicious and evil.
People die every day in this world. Why don't you die, too? Why?”
After enduring everything she had, Catherine believed her heart had toughened sufficiently to remain
impervious to external factors.
However, as she listened to her mother cursing her, she couldn't prevent an overwhelming wave of
sorrow from washing over her.
She had always thought her mother cherished her deeply, that she was the precious gem cradled in
her mother's palm.
When everyone had been adamant about preventing her from giving birth to Luna, her mother had
stood by her side in silence, offering her the strength to bring the child into the world.
Alas, reality once again inflicted a merciless wound upon her heart.
She was a daughter, incapable of carrying on the family lineage for the Rogers family. Consequently,
regardless of how much she contributed and sacrificed, they viewed her as nothing more than a pawn.
A ridiculous, pathetic pawn.
Her sorrowful and despondent demeanor shattered Simon's heart.
The entire Rogers family was now under the control of the Luther family. His beloved woman shouldn't
have to endure such stifling agony.
“Cath, they may not care about you, but I do. My father and mother, Artemis and Bailey, and even
Caridee, all of them care about you as well. Cath, you've done everything in your power for them, yet
they failed to recognize it. Don't punish yourself for their mistakes. Everything is under control here.
How about I bring you back to Hallsbay now, to meet my parents?”
Catherine remained silent, her head slightly lowered, lost in her own thoughts.
At that moment, the emergency room doors swung open, and a doctor hurried out. He said to
Stephanie, “Mrs. Rogers, Mr. Harvey has displayed signs of life again, but he has sustained severe
injuries from the silver needle, causing significant physical damage. There is a chance he may be left
with a lifelong disability. You should be mentally prepared for this possibility.”
Upon hearing the first part of his statement, Stephanie sprang up from her seat in excitement.
However, upon hearing the latter part of his words, she slumped back into the chair in despair as if she
had been thrust into an icy abyss.
The doctor added, “However, the good news is that his impaired nervous system has returned to its
normal function due to the stimulation.”
A hint of an expression that was neither a smile nor a cry appeared on Stephanie's face when she
heard that.
Should I be excited or sad? Harvey has regained consciousness, yet he is now disabled.
The heavens are truly stingy, removing one torment from me, only to replace it with another hardship.
“No,” Stephanie exclaimed, her voice filled with urgency. “Harvey is the heir to the Rogers family, the
next family head. He can't lead the family from a wheelchair. It would make us a laughingstock to the
outside world.”
With that, she rushed to the doctor, grasping his arm tightly. “Please, do everything in your power to
save Harvey's legs.”
The doctor was troubled. If they could, they would undoubtedly do so with all their might.
However, there was nothing they could do.
“Mrs. Rogers, Ms. Catherine is friends with Ms. Jefferson. Why don't we have her ask for Ms.
Jefferson's help? She is the renowned doctor, Anonymous, known for her expertise in acupuncture. I'm
sure she can cure Mr. Harvey's condition,” the doctor suggested.
Stephanie was puzzled. “What Ms. Jefferson?”
The name quickly registered in her mind after she had posed the question.
Bailey Jefferson. Yes. She's the renowned doctor, Anonymous. Her medical skills are unparalleled. She
must have a way to cure Harvey.
With that thought in mind, she turned around and rushed to Catherine, tightly gripping the latter's hand,
and urgently said, “The disaster that befell the Rogers family is all because of you. You must atone for
your sins. I'm not asking you to restore the family to its former glory, but you must ask Bailey to
intervene and save Harvey, you must.”
Her sorrowful and despondent demeanor shattered Simon's heart.
Catherine chuckled softly, a profound sorrow and pain that couldn't be dispelled loomed deep within her
eyes.
It seemed that her final vestige of utility lay in beseeching Bailey to rescue Harvey.
How pathetic.
Simon looked at the trembling woman in his embrace, his heart throbbing with profound anguish.
Relentless waves of suffocating pressure overwhelmed him, compelling tears to stream from his eyes.
Suddenly, a flurry of hurried footsteps reverberated from outside the infirmary.
Following that, Artemis stormed in, cradling Bailey, who was drenched in blood. Two female doctors
trailed behind him.
Simon blurted out, “Artemis, what's wrong with Bailey?”
Artemis shot his younger brother a frosty glare.
All of this mess is because of this brat. If not for him, my precious Bay wouldn't have been hurt.
“Stay outside and keep an eye on everyone here. Don't let them barge into the ward during the suturing
process and disturb Bailey's treatment,” he warned.
After Artemis rushed into the nearest hospital room with Bailey in his arms, Stephanie once again
gripped Catherine's wrist tightly. “It seems like fate doesn't want to cut off the Rogers family line. We
were just talking about Bailey, and she showed up immediately. Cath, Harvey is your blood brother. You
must save him. Please.”
Catherine slowly pried her mother's fingers away, her countenance devoid of emotion as she declared,
“All right, I will ask Bailey to save him. But after this, the Rogers family will have absolutely nothing to
do with me.”
After she finished speaking, her eyes rolled backward, and she collapsed into Simon's arms.
Following a day and night of turmoil, she was physically and mentally drained. She simply couldn't hold
on any longer.
Simon let out an alarmed cry but was soon reassured when he saw her breathing steadily, appearing to
be fine. Cradling her in his arms, he promptly made his way to another hospital room.
The chaos outside had already come to an end.
The Rogers brothers had been apprehended, and the remaining individuals were all executed to the
very last one.
This family, with a legacy spanning hundreds of years, now teetered on the edge of collapse.
While it hadn't entirely crumbled, the severe blow it endured today would require a minimum of three to
five decades to recuperate from.
In the hospital room, the two maids had already dressed Bailey's wound when Stephanie barged in
from the outside at that very moment.
