Holding myself back
Roman’s POV
“Give me the strongest drink you have.” I muttered, plopping on the bar stool.
The waitress darted me a smile as she nodded before getting the equipments for mixing the drink ready. All text © NôvelD(r)a'ma.Org.
I sighed heavily, as I felt the blood vessels inside my head throb with a migraine.
The thoughts of the night before invaded my mind for the umpteenth time, and my heart lurched with guilt.
No matter how much the alcohol I drank was, I just couldn’t shake the image of Sofie staring up at me, her coffee eyes misty with unshed tears and atrocious hatred for me.
I had no idea what possessed me to take Sofie in the most painful way without her permission. Although a part of me hated her for lying to me, that didn’t mean I wanted to harm her.
I couldn’t even bring myself to apologize to her, because I felt both hurt and disgusted toward myself.
The flowery oud scent of an exotic perfume wafted into my nostrils, as I felt a shadow loom beside me.
I couldn’t bring myself to care about whoever the person was as I collected my drink from the waitress with a muffled ‘thanks.”
“Hey, baby boy.” I heard the person say but I just scoffed and gulped down my alcohol without paying attention to them.
“Ooh, cold. But don’t worry, I love a man with an icy demeanor just like you, y’all know how to spice things up in bed.” The person chuckled, and I just snorted to convey my disinterest.
“I’m not interested.” I mumbled in the coldest tone I could muster.
I felt a hand slide up my thigh, beside my crotch and I finally whipped my head sideways to dart her a menacing glare.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” I spat, forcefully shoving her hand off my thigh.
She didn’t seem mad, instead she looked amused as she rolled her eyes and cleared her throat, “You’re no fun, so fucking boring.”
“If being boring means I’m not interested in having sex with a classless stranger at a bar, then yes, I am.” I retorted.
“Arrogant bastard.” She snickered as she got up from the stool and headed to a dark corner of the bar.
I just shook my head as the waitress filled my now-empty glass again while sending me a sheepish look.
“You didn’t come with your friend, today.” She said, sliding the drink toward me.
I failed to suppress the scowl that captured my face at the indirect mention of Damien.
“Yeah, I didn’t.” I replied plainly, and she cocked a befuddled brow.
“That’s new, since you both became regular patrons here, you’ve never visited here alone. Is he on a trip or something?” The waitress pushed on, and I could feel my patience thinning with every passing second.
She’s not the cause of your misfortune, so why are you getting mad at her? A voice inside my head quipped and I couldn’t help but agree.
She was just being nice and asking after her client, she didn’t know something was up between Damien and I.
“Oh, there he is, he’s coming over here.” She said, her eyes lighting up with a smile as she looked past me.
I followed her gaze and ire simmered within me on sighting him.
It was Damien in flesh and blood.
He had a stupid smile plastered to his face as he walked closer to us.
The urge to lunge myself at him, and bludgeon his face with my knuckle until his face became a bloody mess stirred inside me but I suppressed it.
I just ignored him, and steered my attention back to the alcohol I was nursing.
“A lovely evening to you, Shelanda.” Damien greeted the waitress whose smile widened.
“It’s very nice to see you, sir. I just asked about you from your friend.” She said, gesturing to me.
“My schedule has been really tight nowadays, so I haven’t really had the time for my social life. How is business going by the way?” He asked, to which she nodded.
Yeah, I bet his schedule was really tight. He had to have fun with Sofie, pretend to be my good friend and also run his firm.
He was really an hardworking bastard.
“Great. Thanks for asking, sir. What drink would you like to have?”
“My usual.” He winked at her and she laughed before excusing herself.
“Hey, man. What’s up with you nowadays? You neither answer calls nor do you reply my texts, what’s going on?” Damien rambled out as he took his seat on the bar stool beside me.
“Work is really hectic. I have tons of proposals to review.” I muttered, sparing him the slightest of glances.
“Oh. You could at least text back, you know? You had me worried, I thought something happened to you.” He said, patting my shoulder.
Of course, he’d be worried about me.
The fucking nerve he had to pretend to care about me.
“Do you have Sofie’s contact with you? My phone is dead, let me borrow yours.” I lied, outstretching my hand toward him.
Damien froze for a millisecond before huffing. “Dude, why would I have her contact with me?”
“Right. I forgot, I’m starting to get tipsy. For a second, I thought you guys hung out.” I feigned an amused chuckle.
“No, man. She’s your woman, why would I hang out with her? Wouldn’t that be breaking the bro code?” Damien laughed along.
I shook my head as I laughed harder, I couldn’t believe Damien could be such a pathological liar.
“Right, you’d never hang out with my girl, would you?” I prodded, swirling my drink.
“Of course not, that can almost be considered cheating. What would we even discuss?” He shook his head and smacked my chest.
I guessed I really seemed stupid and extremely gullible that my best friend of over a decade was lying so casually to my face.
I just had to get tangible evidence that they were both cheating before exposing them.
“Right. What would you discuss?” I reiterated his words with an amused tone.
He laughed as he collected his drink from the waitress and we clinked our glasses together.
I will end you, Damien, I thought as he brought the glass to his lips.
I would be his worst nightmare very soon.
