Secrets Stained
A Daughter Marked by Failure
Faye, the protagonist, is a wolfless girl in a world where every member of a pack transforms into a wolf. Since her sixteenth birthday, she has lived with humiliation, rejection, and the constant reminder that she is “less.” Four years have passed, and because she never awakened a wolf, she is considered weak, powerless, and unworthy in the eyes of her family and her pack, Duskwood.
On a stormy night, Faye sits in the council hall with her parents. Looming above their heads is a terrifying decision — she must marry Hardy Brookhaven, a feared northern lord with a blood-soaked reputation. Hardy has already had four wives, all of whom are dead. Three died on the wedding night, and the fourth lasted only a week. The council claims this marriage is only ceremonial, meant to keep peace, but everyone knows it is a death sentence.
2. A Political Sacrifice
Faye’s parents pressure her to accept the marriage. Her father insists that the treaty with the northern territories depends on this union. If she refuses, Duskwood will lose protection, and their enemies — including Deon Raven — will attack. Her mother plays a different emotional card: Sally, Faye’s younger sister, is the pride of the family and has a bright future. If anyone must be sacrificed, it will be Faye, not Sally.
Faye realizes the truth — she isn’t being chosen. She is being discarded. She is the expendable daughter, the one without a wolf, the one who can be sent to die so the rest of them can live.
For her sister’s sake, for her pack’s sake, Faye finally signs the marriage document. In that moment, she becomes Hardy Brookhaven’s future bride — the fifth sacrifice.
3. An Attic of Isolation
After signing, Faye returns alone to her small attic room, a symbol of her diminished place in her own home. While Sally enjoys comfort and status, Faye lives like a forgotten shadow. The storm outside mirrors her fear. She packs the few belongings she owns — thin dresses, an old cloak, and her sister’s blanket — knowing she will soon be sent to the frozen, merciless North.
She tries to prepare herself for a cold life in Hardy’s territory, but deep inside, she knows she will not survive long enough to worry about winter.
4. The Wolf-Killer Arrives
Just as she tries to rest, something changes in the air. Faye senses a presence. The window flies open in the raging storm, and standing inside her room is the last person she ever expected — Hardy Brookhaven himself.
Huge, cold, and predatory, Hardy looks at her as though she is prey. Faye has seen him from afar before, but now she is standing face-to-face with the infamous man who destroys every bride he is given. Hardy’s eyes, voice, and stillness all radiate danger.
He mocks her, asking whether she will scream like a wolf or cry like a lamb when she dies. He reveals he already knows she is wolfless — and he clearly despises her for it.
5. A Deadly Conversation
Hardy asks a cruel question: What would happen if the bride killed herself before the marriage is completed? Faye understands instantly — he is testing her. He wants to see her fear, her weakness, or perhaps find an excuse to destroy her pack immediately.
But Faye does something unexpected. She refuses to break.
She answers him calmly, explaining that her death would trigger a war. The King requires a bride; if she dies, Hardy would be allowed to annihilate Duskwood. Her pack would burn. Her people would die.
Her intelligence surprises him. He expected a trembling, foolish girl. Instead, she stands her ground with logic and clarity.
6. Hardy’s Suspicion and Cruelty
Hardy claims her father is hiding something and implies Faye might be part of a bigger secret. Faye tells him the truth — no one trusts her enough to include her in council matters. She is worthless in their eyes. Hardy listens, and though he seems unimpressed, he does not kill her. His insults continue, degrading her for her weakness. Then, with a snap of his fingers, he orders his guard to arrange Faye’s death and burn Duskwood at sunrise.
Hardy turns to leave.
In that instant, Faye realizes she has only seconds to save herself — and her entire pack. She cannot beg. She cannot scream. She must prove she has value.
7. Faye’s Hidden Ability
She calls out to Hardy and claims she can be useful. Hardy pauses, amused. Faye then does something bold and dangerous — she reaches for a guard’s blade and slices her own palm open.
Before Hardy’s eyes, the wound begins to heal.
The blood stops flowing. The skin knits back together. In seconds, her hand is whole again.
Wolfless girls do not heal like that. No werewolf heals without a wolf. This means Faye is not normal. There is something hidden inside her — something even more mysterious and possibly forbidden.
Hardy’s guard draws a sword in panic and calls her a sorceress.
And the chapter ends on that powerful, shocking revelation — Faye is not what she seems, and her death may not be as simple as Hardy expected.
