As I gazed at Christopher, an indescribable emotion welled up within me. I suddenly understood the meaning of the phrase, Belated concern is worth nothing.
I pressed my lips together and said, “Believe it or not, it’s up to you.”
With that, I didn’t spare Christopher another glance and walked away. I wasn’t sure if it was because I didn’t want to look or because I didn’t dare to.
What Christopher thought no longer mattered much to me.
I just wanted to live my own life.
That was all.
Unfortunately, I forgot that many things were beyond my control.
Just as I reached the hotel lobby, I ran straight into Skylar
Strangely, I had no fondness for Kimberly, but I didn’t feel any aversion toward her parents; in fact, I found them rather endearing.
The moment our eyes met, I smiled at Skylar, but her face remained expressionless as she scrutinized me once more, even more openly than she had in the banquet hall.
I maintained my slight smile and said politely, “Aunt Skylar, I must be going now.”
Skylar’s expression was gentle, but her eyes held a distant chill. “We are strangers to each other. You should call me Mrs. Harris.”
My fingernails dug into my palm, my composure faltering for a moment as 1 hastily replied, “Alright. Then, Mrs. Harris, I have some matters to attend to…”
Skylar interrupted, “Ms. Royston, let’s have a brief chat. It won’t take much of your time.”
I agreed, “Alright.
For some reason, I found it hard to refuse Skylar.
I had a rough idea that Skylar was here to speak on Kimberly’s behalf, and I could guess what she might say.
I should have coldly refused and walked away, but for some reason, something compelled me to hear her out.
Skylar’s previously distant gaze softened a bit. “I heard that you and Christophor have been dragging your feet and haven’t finalized your divorce yet?”
Just as I had anticipated. I began to respond, “Yes…”All content is property © NôvelDrama.Org.
Before I could finish, Skylar interrupted with a sigh. “Actually, I wanted to apologize on behalf of our Kimberly. That child has been spoiled by us since she was young. Whatever she wants, she must have it. Please don’t take it to heart.”
I shook my head. “It’s alright. With or without Miss. Harris, we would have divorced anywny.”
“That’s good to hear.” Skylar seemed to breathe a sigh of relief. Seeing that I wanted to leave, she quickly added, “You and Jerry are just friends, right?”

I replied, “Yes.”
Skylar’s gaz
fell on me as she tentatively asked, “Do you have any feelings for him?”
Not sure of Skylar’s intentions, I answered honestly, “No. I’ve only met him a few times; we aren’t even close. Besides, I am about to get divorced and have no mind to think about such things.”
Skylar looked at me with satisfaction and advised, “It’s good that you think that way. Jerry’s parents are easygoing and indulgent, but they would never allow him to marry a divorced woman. It’s best that you don’t have such thoughts, or you’ll suffer in the future.”
A divorced woman.
If someone else had said that, I wouldn’t have cared, but coming from Skylar, it felt like a sting.
Tears welled up in my eyes, and I lowered my lashes to hide the inexplicable sense of grievance. Smiling. I nodded, “Alright, don’t worry!! know my place.”
Skylar continued, “As for your divorce with Christopher, you should finalize it soon to prevent any gossip about Kimberly from those who don’t know the situation.”
Just then, the door swung open, and a cold wind swept in, causing Skylar to pull her shawl tighter around her shoulders. In a tone that was both a promise and a condescension, she added, “If you ever need help from us, just ask.”

breath and curved my lips into a light smile. “No need! The Harris family is a prestigious household; I wouldn’t want to
With that, I left the hotel directly.
However, after only a few steps, my vision suddenly blurred.
It wasn’t sadness, just envy.
re, she would surely protect me too.
If my mother were still
here.
Mommy, Mommy, I missed you so much.
Suddenly, from behind a large pillar in the parking corridor, Jerry emerged, frowning at me. “What are you crying about? Weren’t you determined to get a divorce? Alter talking to him for a bit, you can’t bear to leave?“
I hastily wiped away my tears and sniffled. “No, the wind outside is too strong, and some sand got into my eyes.”
Jerry saw through my facade instantly and responded with biting sarcasm, “Got it. For you to cry like this, you really can’t tolerate any sand in your eyes.”
My bad mood dissipated a bit. I asked, “Didn’t you say you’d wait for me in the car? Why are you here?
“It’s stuffy in the car.” Jerry said this nonchalantly and walked ahead.
Once nestled in the car, the moment the warmth enveloped me, I realized just how profoundly the cold had seeped into my bones.
The sleek, silver–gray Pagani roared to life and seamlessly merged onto the main thoroughfare.
I gathered my thoughts. “Why did you call me over today, anyway?”
Initially, I assumed it was merely for the sake of feminine company. Then, I speculated that I had been brought here to play a specific role

Now, I sense a deeper undertorte.
On the bustling city avenue, the car couldn’t surge forward with its usual gusto due to the myriad of traffic lights, forcing even this beast of a sports car to stop and go.
Jerry glanced at me out of the corner of his eye. “What do you think?”
“To make me see the reality and stop competing with Kimberly for a man,” I said,
That’s absurd. Didn’t you claim I sabotaged your plans the other day? Jerry casually draped one hand over the window sill and deftly handled the steering wheel with the other. “Now I’m giving it back to you.”
Hearing this, clarity dawned upon me. Jerry wanted me to witness the Harris family’s unwavering resolve to secure Christopher as their son–in–law. In doing so, it would expedite the process of Christopher and I finalizing our divorce.
1 looked at Terry. “So, should I thank you?”
Jerry shrugged with a nonchalant grin. “Why not? You can treat me to a meal.”
I sighed, “You really don’t seem like the type to be so devoted.”
Jerry’s jawline tensed for a split second, then he offered a faint smile. Your way of paying compliments is one–of–a–kind”
“Won’t you face any repercussions for causing a scene today?” I asked casually.
Jerry retorted, “What trouble? Worst case, my father might give me a scolding, but I won’t lose a piece of flesh.”
It was clear this wasn’t his first rodeo; he appeared to be quite seasoned in this dance of defiance.
I chuckled, poised to respond, when Jerry nonchalantly lifted his eyelids and continued, “Even if he hits me, it’s whatever. As long as alive, Til keep bringing her up. Otherwise, if no one mentions her, if everyone gives up, she’ll really vanish.”
I was slightly taken aback. The her Jerry mentioned was the Harris family’s daughter.
I raised an eyebrow. “You’re so devoted, yet Mrs. Hagris is still worried you might impulsively marry me.”
y uttered, “She just likes to
to worry unnecessarily.”

As our conversation continued, the car descended into the underground garage. Jerry expertly backed into a parking spot and raised an eyebrow at me. “And you better not get any ideas about me either. There’s no way I could ever like you.”
“I know, I know. You’re really full of yourself, I mocked, stepping out of the car and heading toward the elevator alone.
Once out of the elevator, we went our separate ways. To my surprise, a cake box sat at my doorstep. I bent down to pick it up and saw a note through the transparent side panel.
[Hope, happy birthday, and all the best.)
Jerry must have heard the commotion from my side and turned to look, his eyes narrowing, and he asked in suspicion. “A birthday cake? Is today your birthday too?”
