CHAPTER 56
Chapter 56 Companionship.
I have thought Bentley might try to persuade me not to divorce Christopher.
But Bentley didn’t.
I could clearly perceive that Bentley’s life was gradually slipping away, his voice becoming incredibly weak. “Anyway, stop Evelyn from marrying Christopher, guard the Valence family for me.”
“Okay, Okay.“.
I was on the verge of collapsing, crying and nodding repeatedly. “Bentley, did Evelyn say something to you? Otherwise, why would your old issue suddenly act up?”
“She…”
Bentley s eyes showed disgust and anger, and he eventually just sighed. “Just remember what I said.”
“Okay, I remember; I remember everything.”
I choked up as I spoke, hesitant to ask further, afraid of angering Bentley once again.
But I still doubted Evelyn.
Evelyn must have said something to Bentley.
“Hope, don’t be sad. Take good care of your unborn child.”
With the last of his strength, Bentley looked at me kindly and smiled. “That way, I can rest assured.”
Suddenly, the monitor made a high–pitched, long–winded sound.
I looked at Bentley, who had already closed his eyes with a smile on his lips and instantly collapsed.
Bentley knew it all.
He already knew that I was pregnant.
But he had never asked me about this.
1 gripped the edge of the hospital bed, slowly kneeling on the ground, tears streaming down my face. “Grandpa, I will fulfill your wish. I will do everything you said.”
I hoped Bentley could still hear and leave peacefully.
“Grandpa!
After a long time, a familiar yet hesitant voice came from behind me
Chapter 56 Companionship
Evelyn finally allowed Christopher to come over.
Christopher was shocked and asked dully, “Hope, what happened to Bentley?”
“Bentley passed away.”
I answered quietly, completely drained of energy, letting tears slide down silently.
After decades, I had lost a loved one again. It tumed out that was how it felt.
This time, the impression was even more profound.
I couldn’t articulate the sensation; I just felt suffocated and desperate. Tears welled up, but no sound escaped, only the pain suppressed in my heart.
It was late autumn. Exiting the hospital, I felt chilled to the core.Property belongs to Nôvel(D)r/ama.Org.
I had just reached the curb, numbly reaching out to hail a taxi when Christopher suddenly appeared, pulling me towards the parking lot.
Too exhausted to have a word, I allowed him to lead me. Not until he ushered me into the car that I asked vaguely, “Where are you taking me??
“Go home.”
He looked gentle, leaning over to help me fasten the seatbelt as if it were a usual occurrence.
He said “go home,” not “take me home.”
I came to my senses, prepared to get out of the car, and quietly said, “I’m going back to Elissa’s house.”
Christopher didn’t give me a chance. He stepped on the gas, causing the car to fishtail as it quickly left the hospital and merged into traffic.
During this period, there was heavy traffic on the road, but Christopher’s car kept accelerating.
He drove faster and faster.
“Christopher!”
I woke up abruptly, gripping the handrail above. “Can you slow down a bit?”
He ignored my words.
His lips tightened into a straight line, his hands with distinct knuckles gripping the steering wheel tightly, veins bulging as if venting emotions through this action.
I just realized that he had been suppressing and holding back before.
Fortunately, he drove in the direction of Valence Manor, and after bypassing the downtown area, the traffic on the road

significantly decreased. We were much safer.
I couldn’t stop him, so I just hunkered back into the seat.
I kept thinking about what Bentley had said.
Previously, Bentley had disapproved of Christopher’s relationship with Evelyn, mentioning that she was a bit complicated. However, today, Bentley appeared to have a different attitude.
What did Evelyn say to Bentley in the end?”
As the car pulled into the old mansion, I got out straight away and started to walk. Christopher took a big step and caught up with me, pulling me into his arms.
1 froze as Chris buried his head in my shoulder. I looked a bit helpless as he spoke, “Hope, will you stay with me for the night?”
“Just one night.”
“I beg you.”
After hearing his words, I suddenly remembered the medical records I had seen in the study during the day and couldn’t help but feel sorry for him. “Okay.”
The atmosphere inside the old mansion grew heavy, and without Bentley, the entire house suddenly felt empty that
night.
When I woke up in the middle of the night, someone slowly embraced me from behind. Without turning around, I
knew who it was.
For some reason, I detect sadness in every move Christopher makes tonight.
“Have you fallen asleep?”
He rested his forehead against my head and asked in a very soft voice.
I didn’t respond, nor did I react with any movement. After a while, Chris‘ despondent voice sounded. “Hope, I must have disappointed Bentley greatly. I wasn’t by his side when he passed away.”
He actually chose to believe Evelyn’s clumsy lies and acting.
Such has been the case, and I didn’t know what to say either.
His voice hoarse, he asked, “Is Bentley mad at me?”
I looked at the moonlight streaming in through the crack in the curtains. “I didn’t tell Bentley that you were with Evelyn pretending to have abdominal pain when he was dying.”
It was the first time that I discovered how cruel I could be.

Although I was comforting him, my words also hurt him.
“I’m sorry.”
Christopher regretfully said, “I just wanted to comfort her and then quickly go back to Bentley.”
“It doesn’t matter anymore.”
1 didn’t want to hurt him with words, so I said, “You shouldn’t apologize to me either. It’s not me that you’re sorry t
He remained silent behind me for a moment and then replied, “I’m sorry to you and Grandpa.
1 felt bitter, broke his hand, lay flat, and looked up at the ceiling.
*Christopher, you will lose more because of her sooner or later.”
I did not explicitly mention who I was referring to, but we both understood.
Christopher hesitated for a moment as if he had pondered for a long time before making a decision. “Hope, let’s start over,” he said.
the light
1 suddenly sat up, fumbled in the dark to turn on the light, and was about to get angry, but then I saw his eyes turning red, tears welling up at the corners of his eyes.
It turned out that Chris was crying.
All my dissatisfaction disappeared in a moment.
After taking a deep breath, I made a great effort to calm down. “If you’re thinking this because of Grandpa, it’s completely unnecessary. Bentley never mentioned this request before he passed away.”
He replied earnestly, “Bentley told me during the day that my wife can only be you.”
I stood by the bed, looking at him. “If Grandpa hadn’t passed away today, would you still remember this sentence? Or,
if Grandpa wished for you to cut off contact with Evelyn, could you do it?”
His face darkened. He didn’t answer my question, instead making a decision. “Anyway, we can’t get divorced.”
“Are you informing me?”
I paused for a moment, then asked in astonishment.
