Chapter 116
As she watched Kristin and Rhett leave, Hertha’s expression turned sour.
“Ms. Haywood…” Rhett’s secretary spoke softly.
“I’ll wait here.” Hertha responded, her face quickly returning to an innocent smile. “I’ll have lunch with Rhett after his meeting.”
She settled onto the couch, where she remained the entire morning.
Her love for Rhett stretched back to childhood. Yet, Rhett never seemed to notice her. But Hertha had always known that Rhett would be hers somehow. By any means necessary, she’d ensure that he would marry her.
The secretary nodded and exited the CEO’s office.
Leaning back, Hertha was lost in thought. “How could I force Kristin out of the company?”
“Sirens! We need an ambulance!” The commotion outside pulled Hertha from her
scheming.
She stood up and grabbed someone passing by. “What happened?”
“Mr. FitzGerald had an allergic reaction and he’s in shock!”
Hertha went pale with worry and rushed towards the conference room. “Is the meeting over? How did he have an allergic reaction all of a sudden?”
“Apparently, the new assistant didn’t know about Mr. FitzGerald’s peanut allergy and offered him a peanut brittle after the meeting.”
Hertha frowned deeply. Kristin was a troublemaker!
Hertha’s stride faltered, but then a sly smile tugged at the corners of her lips..
With such a blunder, could Kristin even stay at the company after this?
“Ms. Haywood, don’t fret. The ambulance has arrived and Mr. FitzGerald is already on his way to the hospital,” the secretary reassured.
Hertha nodded, her voice heavy with implication. “Randall, how long have you been
with Rhett?”
“This is my second year,” the secretary Randall promptly replied.
“Rhett is demanding. To be by his side for two years means he trusts you, second only to York. But this new assistant seems unreliable without a trustworthy degree or credentials. Now she has made Rhett allergic and he was even sent to the
hospital. This is serious, isn’t it?”
Randall hesitated before agreeing. “It is. A mistake like this during such an important meeting will be taken seriously. The board will hold Kristin accountable. They definitely emphasized Mr. FitzGerald’s allergy during training.”
Poor Kristin was in hot water.
“The chat group is blowing up. Nobody can save Kristin now. Mr. Holcomb is already on his way here.”
Hertha widened her smile, “That’s right. We can’t have someone so careless around Rhett.”
Tapping her cheek thoughtfully, Hertha asked, “Has Holcomb arrived?”
“He’ll be here any moment,” Randall confirmed.
“I think Rhett’s assistant should be someone professional to trust. I can’t trust anyone else with him. I should do it myself.” Hertha was ready to volunteer.
“Absolutely, Ms. Haywood. You’re bound to be Mrs. FitzGerald soon. What’s better than being his assistant? It would intensify your relationship with Mr. FitzGerald!” Randall caught on quickly. “When Mr. Holcomb arrives, I’ll make sure to recommend
you.”
Hertha nodded. “Once I join the FitzGerald family, I won’t forget to reward your loyalty.”
“Ms. Haywood, your word is all I need,” Randall beamed.
At Harborside Haven.
Vincent, hoping to take credit for the work, arrived early at Harborside Haven with Nicola, only to receive a call from the company.
“Kristin has caused a mess. She unknowingly gave Rhett peanut brittle.”
Vincent stood abruptly, furrowing his brow. “Kristin gave Rhett peanut brittle?”
This was a disaster…
The board wouldn’t let Kristin off the hook.

concern for Kristin.
He chuckled bitterly at his irony and was going mad.
Back at Garner’s place, Vincent had panicked at the sight of Kristin slashing her wrists emotionlessly before him.
His chest hurt.
He couldn’t let go of Kristin even after all her mistakes.
“Kristin gave Rhett peanut brittle?” Nicola entered, her laughter filled with glee. “Lisa, you’re brilliant. Now the board will have to take action against Kristin. We should strike while the iron’s hot. Kristin already has a record. We’ll insist that the training emphasized these points and accuse Kristin of deliberately endangering Rhett. We’ll call the police and get her locked up again.”
Nicola sat back, a cold huff escaping her.
Kristin nearly sent Vincent to jail, and then Nicola took revenge on Kristin.
“Mom!” Vincent rushed over, snatching Nicola’s phone. “What are you doing?”
Nicola was startled by his reaction. “What’s gotten into you?”
“You let Lisa set Kristin up? Did Lisa fail to inform Kristin about Rhett’s allergy?” Vincent’s anxiety was palpable, his heart racing.
Kristin might not survive back in jail.
That day she attempted suicide, which wasn’t an act. Her eyes were void of life like a walking corpse without a soul.
“I did it for you. Kristin dared to plot against you, dragging our names through the mud. Sending her to jail is letting her off easy,” Nicola retorted coldly..
If it weren’t for the stain of Vincent getting hauled off by the cops, would they be slumming it in Harborside Haven so early, hustling to wine and dine Eddie just to save face?
Vincent clenched his fists and turned to leave.
“Where are you going?” Nicola was steeped in shock as she stared at Vincent.
Had he completely lost his mind?
“I’m going back,” Vincent declared his intent to return.
He could hurt Kristin but didn’t want to be the reason she’d end up behind bars

again.
In truth, he regretted it the moment he stood in court five years ago, pointing the finger at Kristin for extortion.
Kristin had just gazed at him, her eyes filled with shock and despair.
His remorse was immediate. He wanted to retract his accusation and flip–flopped, but Kristin confessed. She admitted she was a con artist in a hoarse voice and had been swindling money all along.
It was Kristin who had sealed her fate and sent herself to prison. She’d been locked away for five years.
During that time, he’d tried to visit her countless times, only to be rejected each and
every time. He had his regrets.
“Vincent! I’ve already set up a meeting with Eddie for you. If you dare walk out today. you’re no son of mine!” Nicola darkened her face with fury at the thought of him rushing back to Silvergrove City. Had he lost his mind?
“Vincent!” Nicola couldn’t believe her eyes as he didn’t even glance back.
Her son had gone mad again.
For that bitch, he had already gone mad six years ago, locking himself in his room, refusing to eat or drink.
If it hadn’t been for Ruby’s companionship coaxing him back to life. Nicola would have thought Vincent might have starved himself over the bitch in distress!
“Worthless!” she cursed in anger.
For a woman, Vincent had defied Nicola time and again.
Kristin had become a problem that needed to be eradicated.
