Chapter 811 The Last Supper
Chapter 811 The Last Supper
After returning to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and taking a shower, Cedrick got back into his car. He changed his clothes and thoughtfully prepared an excuse for his change of attire.
If his wife were to ask, he would explain that he had an emotional argument with Joe. Then, he would it resulted in his coat getting dirty, and that was why he had to change his clothes.
The mere thought of returning home to rest in the arms of his sweet, soft wife cleared away all the gloom that had previously clouded his mind.
The clock on the wall pointed to two o’clock. The lab’s ward was very quiet. The breathing of two children. could be heard.
Gwendolyn sat worriedly by the bed, her fingers sliding across her phone. He hasn’t returned yet. Could it be that the matter with Joe is quite tricky? Or is it that Joe is up to his old tricks again?
After much hesitation, Gwendolyn decided to put down her phone, fearing she might interrupt his work.
After tossing and turning in bed for a while, she decided to step out for some fresh air. Just as she opened the door, she saw Cedrick’s happy face.
“Where are you going. Darling?” he asked.
Seeing him in a new set of clothes, Gwendolyn looked him up and down, then asked with a hint of suspicion, “What have you been up to?”
He recited his prepared excuse, and Gwendolyn didn’t question any further. She led him into the ward, and the two of them settled down to sleep together on the small accompanying bed at the side.
The next morning. Zendaya jumped directly between her parents, propping up her small face with her hands, blinking.
Gwendolyn was still sleepy as she held her precious daughter in her arms.
Feeling the presence of a little girl coming between them, Cedrick opened his eyes. “Zendy.”
Upon hearing his disgruntled voice, Zendaya immediately put on a pitiful look. She wrapped her arms around Gwendolyn’s neck and complained, “Mommy, Daddy is being mean to me. You need to manage your husband well.”
Amused by her daughter’s words, Gwendolyn stood up, carrying Zendaya to Benedict’s bed.
The mother and her two children lay under one blanket while Cedrick was pitifully left aside.
Gwendolyn handed Benedict a warm quilt, asking with concern, “How are you feeling now, Benny? Is there anything else that’s bothering you?” Property © NôvelDrama.Org.
Benedict shook his head. “Mommy, I’m not feeling unwell. Are you and Daddy going to work today?”
Seeing the hope in the child’s eyes, Gwendolyn could probably guess what he wanted to do. “Is there anything you feel like doing today?”
Benedict curled up in her mother’s arms, whispering, “I want Daddy and Mommy to be with me.”
Last night, Benedict had a dream. In his dream, his mom and dad were taken away by a monster. The monster even threatened that if he didn’t behave, his mom and dad would never return.
In the dream, it felt so real. A monstrous creature was about to devour his entire family with its gaping. blood-stained mouth.
Gwendolyn originally thought that Benedict wanted her to accompany him out for fun. She didn’t expect that he just wanted her to stay with him.
Thinking about what had happened recently, she could understand Benedict’s fear. She held him tighter. and promised, “If you want Daddy and Mommy to stay with you, then we will. And with Zendy, too, okay?”
Her son had always been incredibly strong, never showing any signs of fear or terror. That time, however, it seemed he was truly scared.
Listening to his son’s words, Cedrick realized that he had been too busy recently and hadn’t spent enough quality time with his children. Swiftly, he got out of bed and gathered his kids and their mother into his arms. “With me here, no one can bully any of you.”
Benedict felt an unparalleled sense of contentment in the embrace of his dad and mom. His short hair brushed against his mom, nuzzling her gently.
Zendaya, acting coy, wrapped her arms around Gwendolyn’s neck and asked, “Mommy, will you always stay with me and Benny?”
She might be a child, but she knew a lot more than one would think. Recently, her dad and morn had been dealing with issues caused by a villain, and she was aware of all of it.
“Of course. Daddy and Mommy will never let any bad people bully you. It’s still early, so sleep a little longer. When you wake up, Daddy and Mommy will take you to kindergarten together,” assured Gwendolyn.
Due to the matter concerning Joe, Zendaya had been staying in the lab. Unlike Benedict, she was meant to live a normal childhood, attending kindergarten.
“Mm!” The girl nodded.
Children always slept very well. Once they found a place of comfort, they would fall into a deep sleep.
Suddenly, Cedrick’s phone began to vibrate. It was a call from Nico.
In order not to wake the two children, Cedrick had no choice but to tread lightly as he moved outside.
“What’s the outcome?” Cedrick assumed Nico was calling to tell him about Joe’s case.
In truth, he knew without needing to be told. Joe had committed such a monstrous crime that, aside from the death penalty, there would be no other outcome.
“It’s a death sentence. Once the judicial bureau confirms there are no errors, the execution by firing squad will be carried out within seven days. At last, Joe will receive the punishment he deserves,” informed Nico.
After a moment of silence, Cedrick spoke. “Hmm, does he have any other wishes?”
After all, Joe was once Cedrick’s closest companion and dearest friend. If he hadn’t strayed from the right path, he wouldn’t have ended up in such a pitiful state today.
Nico responded affirmatively. “Joe said he wants to see you one last time, and.. He wants some wine.”
“Understood.”
After hanging up the phone, Cedrick entered the ward. He whispered a few words into Gwendolyn’s ear. then picked up his coat and walked out. He also had something to discuss with Joe.
Driving to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Cedrick brought two bottles of fine wine. He also had the bureau’s cafeteria prepare some exquisite dishes.
After all, that should be the last time he and Joe had dinner together.
Upon seeing Cedrick arrive, the people from the Federal Bureau of Investigation greeted him one after another. “Good day. Mr. Jenson.”
“Mm-hmm,” responded Cedrick,
Since Joe was a serious offender, he was kept in a surveillance room where his movements could be monitored at all times.
Cedrick took the private elevator to the place where Joe was being held. Joe was sitting in the corner. slumped and disheveled, a far cry from his usual confidence.
His shirt, unchanged, bore the stains of the rain from that day, dirt, and the traces of blood. A bandage was wrapped around his left leg as a result of the gunshot fired by Cedrick.
Upon hearing the sound, Joe slowly lifted his head, his eyes dull and lifeless.
“You’re here.” His voice was hoarse, his lips dry, cracked, and pale.
Opening the door, Cedrick took a seat directly across from him, slowly placing the object in his hand on the table.
Joe looked at him with a hint of surprise, not understanding what Cedrick meant.
Cedrick poured a glass of wine for each of them, raising his glass toward Joe. “Didn’t you want to drink?”
“You came here yourself. Aren’t you afraid I may kill you? After all, I’ve killed so many, one more won’t make a difference.” As Joe spoke, he limped over to the table, picked up the wine glass, and drained it in one gulp.
The liquor with high alcohol content was somewhat spicy. It scorched his throat, yet he laughed heartily. “Great liquor!”
Cedrick followed suit, downing the wine in his hand in one gulp. “You won’t kill me, even if you truly believed that I was the one who killed Eryn. You never considered murdering me, I know. Even if you were to lose all your humanity, you would still cherish the times we fought side by side. You wish for my death, yet fear it will become reality. Only I understand your contradictory struggle.”
Joe stood alone. Revenge had been the only thing driving him forward. His relationship with Cedrick was complicated.
Faced with Cedrick’s affirmation, Joe scoffed but didn’t retort, continuing to drink his wine.
Perhaps knowing that his days were numbered, Joe spoke at length with Cedrick, and they drank a lot of wine. It was as if the two of them had returned to the days when they used to carry out missions together.
Joe was somewhat drunk, sprawled on the table, looking at the person sitting in front of him. Everything. seemed a bit blurry to him.
“Cedrick, you know… I’m actually envious of you. You have everything a lover, a child, and a status that commands respect. Meanwhile, L… With a bitter smile, he didn’t even wait for Cedrick to respond before he abruptly slapped the table and sat up, glaring fiercely at Cedrick. “Don’t think for a second that I’ll let you off the hook, Cedrick. You owe me a life. Even if you end up in hell, I’ll make sure you pay. You owe Eryn a life.”
Cedrick was amused and exasperated, but he let Joe continue the latter’s nonsense.
