Chapter 584 She Is a Gem
Chapter 584 She Is a Gem
Just the thought of Lucas having almost gotten stabbed with the knife made him overwhelmed with frustration while he was stitching Leigh's wound. It was his calm self-restraint and work ethic that allowed him to succeed in stitching up Leigh's wound. After the stitching was done, the only thought in his mind was to find out who it was that had a death wish by making an attempt on Lucas' life.
Lucas also wondered who it was that hated him so much and wanted to kill him but ended up wounding Leigh instead. At this very moment, however, staying with Leigh was of greater importance. After comparing the two options, he decided to keep her company. Together with Madeline, he took her back to the Oasis Law Office.
Madeline saw Leigh home and said to Lucas, "You take care of Leigh and make sure she doesn't come into contact with water. I'll go back and cook some blood-building food for you guys." Everyone was drinking in the evening, and before the meal was served, Leigh got wounded and had to go to the hospital for stitches. She and Lucas are probably hungry already.
"There's no need to trouble yourself, Madeline," replied Lucas. "It's late already. We can just order takeout ourselves."
"It's no trouble. There's a cook at home, so I'll just need to help her out," said Madeline. Then, she hurriedly left without waiting for him to say anything else.
Lucas had no choice but to accept her kind offer. He helped Leigh through the door, supporting her carefully as if she were an old man, which made her burst into laughter. "It's my arm that got injured, not my leg. Why are you helping me?"
He paused for a moment. "Doesn't it hurt?"
Leigh smiled and shook her head. "No, it doesn't."
"That's because the anesthesia hasn't worn off yet. It will hurt later." Lucas sat her down on the couch. "Someone tried to kill us, and you almost died as a result. Aren't you scared? Aren't you upset? Why are you still laughing so happily? Are you missing a few screws?"
"You're the one who's missing a few screws!" She smacked his head with her uninjured hand. "We're fine, aren't we? And besides, haven't you heard people say, 'No matter what happens today, the sun will rise again tomorrow?' Since days would continue to pass no matter if I'm happy or worried, why shouldn't I stay happy no matter what happens?"
Lucas was lost for words. Indeed, there was truth in what she said, but how many people could actually do so? I still think that Dr. Shefford is missing a few screws!
"It's okay. Don't be afraid." Leigh hugged him with her uninjured hand. "Don't worry. That assassin didn't succeed this time, and they won't have another chance in the future. Their cover's blown. Whether it's Sebastian or those from the Mansion, they won't let them get away with it. As long as we catch them, and if they have a mastermind behind them, we'll catch the mastermind, too. There won't be a second time for this kind of thing, and we can rest easy!"
Lucas thought about it for a moment. "You've got a point there." He massaged the back of her head, "Are you tired? Do you want to take a nap?"
"No, I'll go to sleep later," Leigh replied. "Didn't Madeline say she's going to bring us something delicious? I'll go to sleep after having a good meal."
Lucas was speechless. What else can I say? All I can say is that Dr. Shefford doesn't have a care in the world. Even a grown man like me isn't able to do that.
"Oh, right, I have yet to give you your birthday present!" Leigh stood up, went to her bedroom, and came back with a box soon afterward. She handed it to Lucas, saying, "This is for you. Happy birthday!" She leaned over and kissed Lucas on the cheek.
Lucas' face turned red at once, but this time, he didn't dodge her or say anything to ruin the mood. He accepted this readily. I'll never say again that Leigh isn't my girlfriend. She is my girlfriend. She's now my girlfriend and will soon be my fiancé. In the near future, she will be my wife and the mother of my future children. His heart warmed at the thought of this. Looking at the beautifully packaged box in his hand, he asked Leigh, "Can I open it?"
Leigh nodded. "Of course."
Lucas carefully unwrapped the box.
Inside the box was a thick photo album that was gorgeously beautiful. It was filled with photos of himself and photos of him and Leigh. He didn't even know when she had taken some of these photos. He had always known that he was good-looking; ever since he was a kid, countless people had complimented him on his good looks. However, he looked even better in the photos she had taken.
Flipping through one after another of these photos, he suddenly understood what the phrase "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" meant. Leigh loved him and had feelings for him, so even the photos she took of him were different from those taken by others. The person in her photos was clearly not moving, but they seemed to have a soul. Their expressions were vivid, and there was light in their eyes.
At the back of the photo album were photos of him and Leigh. There were photos of her acting funny, as well as photos she had taken of him without him noticing. These were photos she had taken by sneaking up beside him while he was doing something else.
Her eyes were sparkling, too; she was smiling brightly in every photo, her eyes sparkling with happiness like a dazzlingly gorgeous sunflower facing the sun. This girl was happy and filled with joy when she was with him. Although he had never explicitly reciprocated her feelings, she remained happy every day, and her happiness was genuine without a hint of gloom.
In his heart, he felt all warm and fuzzy. She's a real gem. If I abandon her because of my heart condition, I'll be the biggest idiot on earth.
As he carefully studied each photo, Leigh looked at him expectantly, asking, "Do you like this?"
He nodded. "Yeah, I like this."
Leigh smiled and asked, "Shall I give you one of this every year from now on?"
He nodded without hesitation. "Sure!"
Leigh smiled. "Then we should go to different places to take pictures so we can capture different scenery. We can't always take pictures at the same places. It'd be boring."
He nodded again. "Okay!"
"Why are you so well-behaved today?" Leigh smiled and tickled his cheek. "Are you touched by my
heroic act of saving you?"
Lucas was speechless. Hey, that's not the right way to put it, right?
She giggled like a little wild cat that had gotten into mischief.
Lucas felt his heart tickle from her laughter. Suddenly, he grabbed the back of her head and kissed her passionately on the lips…
It took a long while before their lips parted. After they stared wide-eyed at each other for a moment, Leigh was the first to find her voice, saying, "If you ever say again that I'm not your girlfriend, I'm going to punish you, my dear husband!"
Lucas paused for a moment before saying, "I won't say that again."
Leigh furrowed her brow and studied him for a moment. "I know you have feelings for me, but I'm not sure if you're aware of that. So, I have to ask, did you accept me all of a sudden because you finally realized you have feelings for me, or is it a way to repay me for saving your life?"
