Chapter 1900
Zoey's heart was pounding fiercely, her palms tingling.
It was only after she realized what she had done that she took a step back. Fitch lowered his lashes, his fingertips wiping away the trace of blood at the corner of his mouth.
"What's there to be afraid of? I'm not going to hurt you."
"Mr. Haskins is correct, but maybe deep down, I think you might hurt me?"
She had forgotten, but her body still remembered the slap he had given her at the Haskins' Thanksgiving dinner. Fitch stopped wiping his lip, falling silent. Zoey had no desire to engage with him further and found a chair to sit in. Fitch seemed frozen in place, her words striking him like a dagger, drawing blood.
She had become clever now, he thought. He tried to provoke her into remembering the past, and she hit back with even greater force. But she truly didn't remember, so she couldn't grasp the intent behind his words. Unfortunately, he remembered all too well, so one could only imagine the impact of her words.
Zoey didn't want to look at him; she just sat still in her chair. After a while, she felt her chair sink slightly as he sat down beside her.
"Zoey."
He called her name.
"We're not close; you should just call me Zoey."
"I'm sorry."
"Mr. Haskins, you have nothing to apologize for. Today's incident with Nolan was my oversight."
"I do have reasons to apologize, so I'm sorry."
Zoey suddenly felt irritable, and just at that moment, her phone rang. It was Henry. She stood up and walked to the side to answer the call, not noticing Fitch putting on his wireless earbuds. "Hello, Henry?"
"Zoey, I'm all set. Can I come over to your place? I'm on my way, and my folks are with me. At this hour, I bet your parents haven't left yet. We'll just pop by for half an hour."
Henry sounded eager. Zoey had been ready to give up; two people with an unstable relationship, soon to face a long-distance challenge, were 99% likely to drift apart. But now Henry was calling her.
She breathed a sigh of relief and was about to answer when she heard footsteps behind her. In the next second, Fitch took her phone and said, "She can't make it today."
Zoey stared at her empty palm, dumbfounded for a moment, and then saw him hang up the phone. Anger flared up instantly. This belongs to NôvelDrama.Org - ©.
"Are you insane? Give me back my phone!"
But Fitch clutched the phone tightly. "Zoey, you had a car accident four years ago and lost your memory. Have you ever considered that maybe we knew each other before?" Her anger subsided, "What are you trying to say?"
"You want to get engaged to Henry? Then marry him?"
"Yes, I think he's a good match."
"Do you know what you and I were to each other?"
Zoey fell silent for a few seconds before responding coldly, "Even if we were once a couple, it doesn't matter now. Since my memory loss, I have no impression of you at all, which means I didn't care that much about you. Or maybe I did care about you I once, but four years ago, I was Willing to let you go. Mr. Haskins, I have a new relationship now. It's better for both of us not to hold on to the past."
She reached for her phone again, but Fitch grabbed her wrist.
"Come back to Greenfield with me."
Zoey was about to retort, but then she noticed several bodyguards approaching from behind, and her face turned pale. "Fitch, what the hell are you doing?"
As the words left her mouth, the
doctor came out holding Nolan. Seeing Nolan's frail figure, Zoey didn't want to curse in front of the
child and held back. She was
elet
escorted to a car and saw that they
were heading toward her apartment complex, which confused her.
Was Fitch taking her home?
Apparently not.
The car stopped across from her place, and she was ushered inside. The bodyguards followed close behind, handcuffing her hands in the foyer. Fitch went upstairs holding Nolan aying the child on the bed. Nolan lowered his lashes, wanting to
say something but his eyes reddened, and he remained silent. Fitch patted his head gently.
"It's okay, Nolan. I'll come clean to your mom in a bit."
