Redmption 292
Redmption 292
"Madeline!" It was Yerick, and the grin he flashed me was nothing short of feral delight.
My lips curled at the sight of him. It truly was my lucky day. "What? Did you get in trouble or something?"
It was unlikely Yerick had come to the police station for the fun of it.
He nodded and said without shame, "I got caught driving without a license."
This reminded me of the birthday party he had invited me to. He was still underage. I drawled
sarcastically, “Congratulations.”
"Thank you," Yerick replied graciously, unaffected by my withering tone.
Unlike him, I had bigger things to worry about. Dropping the conversation altogether, I cut
a look at the administrator in the midst of retrieving the case file for me.This belongs © NôvelDra/ma.Org.
The administrator stared unblinkingly at the computer screen, still searching. I wondered if
it took so long because my father's case had happened over a decade ago.
Yerick leaned close to me and asked curiously, "What are you doing here, Madeline?"
*Just running an errand." I humored him.
He took it as an opportunity to play hero. "What kind of errand? Is it a tough one? If it is, I could hook you up with someone and have them help you."
1 scoffed. "You're better off looking for someone to ball you out."
He was fortunate he hadn't injured anyone while driving without a license. If he had, I reckoned he would be behind bars for a while..
Yerick smiled smugly. "I'm already in the clear."
I suddenly thought about Chris' appearance earlier. From the looks of it, he had come to save Yerick.
The next second, I felt a nudge against my shoulder as Yerick inched closer. He said in a low voice, “My brother-in-
law and the captain are pretty close."
I was right, but hearing him refer to Chris as his "brother-in-law' irked me to no end. I knew he said it on purpose, too.
"I'm good, thanks," I ground out.
"It's fine. We're pretty
tight. I'm sure I could get him to pull some strings. I'll go and talk to him right now," Yerick offered, my affronted reaction only spurring him on.
He and Jewel truly were related.
They seemed to have a knack for
annoying others. However, I had become immune to such jestings and I even learned to give a snappy comeback from time to time. "Very well, then. Go ahead and tell him. I'll wait right here."
Only then did Yerick's smarmy, mischievous grin fade. He then snorted as he demanded, "You'd seriously stoop that low?"
"You didn't care about discretion, so why wouldn't I stoop low enough to ask him to pull strings for me?" I countered venomously.
Yerick shrugged and finally gave up on his shenanigans. However, he started talking again after two seconds. "What are you having them look into any
As he said this, he poked his head forward to try and read the administrator's computer screen. I grabbed his hair and pulled his head backward, hissi "Ow! Ow! That hurts!" he yelled, though it was hard to tell if he was faking it.
"Go away. Get out of my sight. The further, the better," I warned as I released him and shoved him to the side.
Just then, the administrator found the case file and said, "It'll be two dollars for printing. You may pay by scanning the code."
"Got it," I answered, fishing out my phone only to see a slew of unread messages.
I couldn't be bothered going through them right now and quickly scanned the provided code to make payment.
The administrator clicked the "print"
button, and within seconds, the
whirring of the printing machine. filled the air. My heart thumped wildly as the printing machine worked.
The print job was done within moments. After the administrator stapled the pages together, I heard a familiar voice behind me.
"I swear, Yerick, the next time you get in trouble, you're on your own!"
It was Jewel!
The only reason why Yerick could get away with the things he did was because Jewel had been cleaning up after him.
It was not surprising to see her here, not that it mattered. I only had to pretend I didn't hear her. I just wanted to see the report.
Unfortunately, fate was inclined to torture me. The next moment, Yerick yelled like a wimp, "Madeline, save me!"
Before I could register what he said, he charged toward me and grabbed my wrist, pulling me forward so that he could hide behind me.
