There were only two sentences written on the plain white paper. “Skye, you must divorce Joe within two weeks, or both of your lives will be at risk. Fate is unchangeable. Both of you aren’t meant to be.”
Skylar’s heart tightened at the letter.
Alexander sighed heavily, filled with concern. “You and Joe are both good kids. You’ve been married for a while now, and I know your bond runs deep. It’s incredibly unfair to ask you to divorce like this. But if Viola says your lives will be in danger if you stay together, then…
“Sigh! I can’t even bring myself to tell Gloria about this. We spoke on the phone yesterday, and she’s not been feeling well lately. If she knew about this, she’d be heartbroken. I’m not sure how she’ll take it.”
Truly, fate could be cruel.
At his age, Alexander thought he had seen and understood everything. His emotions shouldn’t fluctuate so wildly anymore. But right now, he couldn’t help but feel a deep sorrow.
Joe and Skylar had been through so much. Copyright Nôv/el/Dra/ma.Org.
The constant blows left Skylar unable to process everything. She looked down at the two letters in her hands, trying to prove they were forgeries. However, no matter how hard she looked, the letters were undeniably written by Viola herself.
Viola had always been correct in everything she did. She had never made a mistake. Viola wouldn’t have written these letters if it wasn’t something important.
The letters instructed her to avoid dealing with negative items and even suggested that she and Joe should divorce.
“You should take these letters with you. Discuss them with Joe and make a decision. You still have two weeks. Also, think about how you will tell Gloria without upsetting her too much. Take some time off. You don’t need to come to work for the next few days,” Alexander said with genuine concern.
Skylar nodded, unable to speak.
A few minutes after Skylar left, Caleb pushed open the door and walked in. He looked at Alexander and asked, “Grandpa, what did you say to Skylar? Her face turned so pale, and she seemed deeply troubled. You didn’t regret giving her this break, did you?”
Sometimes, older people could get really irritable. Caleb wondered if Alexander had snapped at Skylar. Alexander glared at Caleb. “What nonsense are you talking about? Get back to work. Do you think Skylar is like you? I wouldn’t be upset if I had to give her another six months off.
“But you, I get annoyed even with one day off. If Skylar comes to work in the next few days, you better be on your best behavior and not make her angry.”
Caleb felt relieved hearing this. “As long as you’re not making things hard for Skylar, that’s fine.”
“What’s going on in your mind? Get out,” Alexander said, waving him away. He was fed up with Caleb’s behavior.
Seeing Caleb leave, Alexander shook his head. The more he thought about it, the more frustrated he felt.
After leaving Alexander’s office, Skylar found it hard to calm down. She then walked straight out, not heading home.
Instead, she found a café on the way and sat there, drinking coffee and lost in thought.
Before she realized it, it was already past noon. She pulled out the two letters and tried to find any signs that someone had mimicked Viola’s handwriting.
But after two hours of scrutiny, she found nothing.
Just then, Joe’s call came in.
