Chapter 156

Chapter 156

“Candy!” Joe might be old, but he was not muddle–headed.

Although Candice had explained that she and Alex were no longer involved, he hesitated to let her

have any contact with Alex again.

He would not disagree that Alex was a good guy, but he knew that Alex would make Candice

unhappy.

Due to the sudden increase in his volume, Joe started coughing, so Candice quickly stood up to pat his

back and help him calm down.

As the coughing subsided, Joe waved his hand. “Let’s go back. I don’t want to eat.”

Candice agreed and was about to leave with him.

However, the ordered fish soup was brought to the table, personally delivered by Madam Zora.

She greeted them warmly. “Mr. Sundance, Candy! It’s been several years since you last came here. I

was thinking of coming over to say hello!”

Zora used to have a good relationship with Candice’s grandparents. She looked at Candice with a

smile. “Candice, you have grown so much. The last time I saw you, it seemed like you were still in

school, right? Time flies. I still remember how small you were when you first came here, so tiny

and pitiful.”

Candice nodded and pointed to the fish soup. “Madam Zora, could you please pack this for me?”

“Sure, sure.” Madam Zora swiftly grabbed a takeout box and chatted with Joe while packing.

Candice stayed silent until Madam Zora suddenly mentioned. “I saw Henry last month. He and his wife

have just had their second child. Now, the whole family is crowded in the urban village.”

Henry Renault was Candice’s father, and hearing him being mentioned, both Candice and her

grandfather’s expressions turned a little colder.

Madam Zora also knew that she should not say too much and passed the takeout bag to them

and returned to the kitchen.

Candice carried the bag with one hand while the other supported her grandfather out of the place.

However, Sonia and her group were sitting right in the center, so Candice had to pass by them to

leave.

As Candice helped Joe to move past them, she heard Sonia say. “Candice, it’s so rare to run into

you in the north of the city. How about joining us for a meal?”

Her tone sounded insincere, and Candice originally did not want to respond.

However, with her grandfather beside her, she had to coldly refuse. “No need.”

“Then, Candice, if you’re going for a health check tomorrow, remember not to eat breakfast in the

morning.”

When Sonia said this. Candice suddenly froze.

She turned her head with a stiff expression and saw Sonia looking harmless.

Candice’s gaze slowly shifted to Alex’s face. He did not have much expression, but he only looked

up after sensing her gaze.

Then, he casually spoke. “Didn’t you receive the hospital’s message?”

Candice felt a lump in her throat, and she could not make a sound.

Joe frowned and asked. “Candice, are you going for a checkup? Are you feeling unwell?”

Candice’s body was already trembling slightly. She looked at Alex in disbelief.

Alex had arranged a health check for her, and it was humiliating enough. She didn’t expect Sonia

to know about it as well. NôvelDrama.Org exclusive content.

And her grandfather was present too…

Alex stared at her for a while before casually averting his gaze. Then, he nonchalantly answered

her grandfather. “It’s a routine checkup required by the company.”

Candice did not even realize that her palms had turned ice–cold. She supported Joe, calmed

down, and finally found her voice. “I’m fine, Grandpa.”

It wasn’t until Candice and her grandfather left that Sonia’s father asked her. “Was that girl just

now from your company?”

“Yeah. She used to be Alex’s secretary. She’s very capable.” Sonia still maintained her obedient.

daughter image in front of her parents. That was why she had especially found a reason to show

her good relationship with others in the company.

However, she still felt a bit uncomfortable inside. She had unintentionally discovered that Alex

had arranged a health check for Candice.

When she asked Alex, he said it was a resignation checkup.

However, when she asked others, Aether had no such policy.

Thinking this way, she could not help but look resentfully at Alex.

After sending her grandfather back to the nursing home, Candice stayed to have dinner with him

before leaving.

It was already 11 PM when she made her way home, and there were not many people on the road.

Candice slammed on the accelerator, and the car roared forward like a fierce beast.

She gripped the steering wheel tightly, as if doing so could release the pent–up tension inside her.

It was not until the glaring headlights up ahead flashed at her that Candice suddenly snapped

back to reality. She brought the car to a sudden stop at the roadside.

She pressed her forehead against the steering wheel, silently breathing heavily, her throat dry and

aching.

When she arrived home, it was very late. But as soon as she opened the door, she saw Alex sitting

on the sofa.

Candice hesitated, stretching her hand to use the hallway cabinet as a support to gather some

strength.

With

a dry voice, she said, “What do you want?”

Alex casually put away his phone, then lifted his eyelashes to look at her with a cold and deep voice.

“What were you afraid of tonight?”

He was referring to the incident at the fish soup restaurant.

Candice tightened the hand that was holding onto the cabinet and said, “Alex, it’s fine if you target me,

but you clearly know my grandfather is not in good health. Don’t you think what you did was

too much?”

She truly did not dare to think about how Joe would react if Alex had said those harsh words in

front of him.

Since Yvonne and Henry’s divorce, Candice had thought she only had her grandfather as her family.

Alex also knew how important her grandfather was to her.

Candice’s eyes reddened, and she looked at Alex, murmuring softly. “Alex, it turns out you really don’t

care about my feelings at all.”

Alex watched her, and there seemed to be turbulent emotions surging in the depths of his eyes.

However, after a moment, he suppressed those emotions.

He looked at Candice with indifference and said, “That’s your grandfather, not mine. I have no

obligation to consider your feelings.”

These words made Candice feel that she was exceptionally pitiful.

How many times had her grandfather praised Alex in front of her before? But it turned out that this was

how Alex truly felt.

She had thought that Alex could at least sense a bit of sincerity.

Candice no longer wanted to talk to him about these things. She paused and asked, “So, what do

you really want?”

“Nothing. I just hope you don’t forget about the health check,” Alex reminded her emotionlessly.

“What are you trying to prove?” Candice’s voice was almost hoarse, and she watched Alex as her

vision gradually blurred. Despite that, she still held her back straight, repeating, “Alex, can you tell me

what you really want to prove? Why do you have to humiliate me in this way?”

As Candice spoke, a tear the size of a bean rolled down from the corner of her eye, along her face. till it

dripped onto the floor.

Alex squinted at her for a moment, then spoke in an extremely indifferent tone, “You’re overthinking. It’s

just a little discomfort from touching something not very clean.”
