Skylar glanced at Joe, who was still engrossed in his work. She then lowered her head to respond to Aiken.

They sat in silence for quite some time.

As the night deepened and the occasional croak of frogs could be heard, Joe suddenly set his phone down. “A car will be here shortly to take me back to Jipsburg. I have some urgent work to attend to.”

His eyes appeared deep and unfathomable under the dim glow of the moonlight.

It was as if turbulent waves had once surged beneath the surface, but now they lay completely still. Skylar was taken aback. “Are you leaving tonight?”

She checked her phone and saw that it was already nearly 10:00 pm.

“Yeah.” Joe’s tone sounded flat. He exuded a demeanor that suggested he would not be disturbed, a stark contrast to the more approachable man she had encountered in the past couple of days.

It felt as though he was a different person, leaving her with a sense of disconnection. Skylar pondered what had changed since their return from Viola’s house.

Joe’s demeanor seemed off, and she couldn’t help but wonder if it was related to work.

They fell into a silence that lasted for several more minutes.

Skylar had no idea when Joe had made the call, but soon enough, she heard the sound of a car approaching outside. Moments later, there was a knock at the door.

Skylar was about to open it when Joe strode across the room with long strides and reached it first.

He opened the door and addressed the person outside, saying, “Wait a few minutes.”

Joe entered the room and pulled out his suitcase. As he passed Skylar, he said, “Call me if you need anything.” Content from NôvelDr(a)ma.Org.

Skylar looked at him and replied, “Okay, be careful on your way back.”

Joe exchanged a glance with Skylar before quickly averting his gaze and heading out. Soon after, she heard the sound of a car starting up.

Just like that, Joe left. The quiet yard was left with only Skylar.

She stood there for a moment, lost in thought for a moment. However, it didn’t take long for her to shake off the feeling of melancholy and regain her composure.

It was time for bed. The following day, Skylar woke up early. After getting out of bed, she searched for what Janine needed.

Even though it had been a long time since she was home, Janine remembered where everything was

stored.

Skylar and Janine video–called each other.

Janine gazed at the familiar surroundings of their rural home and sighed. “When I married your dad, I thought I would spend my entire life here. I never imagined I would leave after living there for half a lifetime.

“When Christmas comes, and you all have some free time, let’s come back and celebrate together. It’ll be just like when your dad was with us.”

“Sure, let’s make it happen,” Skylar replied, excited about returning home for Christmas.

The countryside would be perfect for setting off fireworks. The family could gather in the yard, enjoying food and drinks in a relaxed and carefree atmosphere

Nothing brought more joy than having the whole family together in good health.

Janine couldn’t help but reminisce as she gazed at the familiar surroundings. “I don’t know what’s been going on lately, but I keep thinking back to when we were young and I first married your dad.

“We didn’t have much money, but we were so happy. Then, when you all came along, our situation improved, and we even built a two–story house. But then your dad had that accident, sigh!”

Skylar could hear the nostalgia in Janine’s voice as she looked at their familiar home. Wanting to change the subject, she asked if Janine needed anything else.
