The Charming Ex-Wife by Gwendolyn

Chapter 665

Chapter 665 Carrying Her

Lysander reached out, interiding to take back the mosquito repellent.

Seeing her persistence, Josiah didn’t insist on holding onto it. He had just handed it over when he heard footsteps approaching. Before he could even glance toward the door, Rhizone, clutching a blanket, appeared before them.

Compared to his eloquent sister, Rhizone was much more reserved. His words were always brief but meaningful. “Josiah, Dr. Thorne, Mom said it’s cold here. She asked me to bring you another blanket.”

The bedding and pillowcases that Nilou had previously brought over were still there. Now, with the addition of this thick blanket, it was clear that their family had truly put thought into it.

Upon seeing Rhizone clutching the blanket that almost covered his eyes, Josiah quickly unzipped the mosquito net to assist him.

Lysander said, “I really can’t thank you enough.”

“It’s fi…” Rhizone was mid–way through the response as his sister had instructed him when his gaze fell upon the cushion next to Lysander. Suddenly alarmed, he blurted out, “Don’t move!”

Upon hearing those words, Josiah, who had just received the blanket, and Lysander, who was about to continue applying the medicine, simultaneously halted their actions.

Leaning forward, Rhizone whispered, “Dr. Thorne, there’s a centipede near your foot!”

Lysander’s face instantly turned deathly pale..

“I–Is it poisonous?” she asked.

Rhizone shook his head. “I can’t quite make it out.”

In the rural health center, there was simply no antidote available. Hence, anyone unfortunate enough to be bitten would likely be left to the mercy of fate.

Naturally, Lysander knew she should avoid the centipede at this time, but from her perspective, she couldn’t determine where it was. If she happened to touch it when she got up, it would be even worse.

Josiah was about to drop the blanket in haste to squash the centipede. Before he could even do so, Rhizone had already lifted Lysander effortlessly with one hand supporting her knee and the other on her back.

Rhizone was considered tall among children around eight or nine, standing at approximately 1.3 meters. However, Lysander was also notably tall among girls. Surprisingly, he picked her up, nearly causing the nerve in her brain to snap.

“Here, Mr. Guerra,” Rhizone said

Understanding his intent, Josiah took Lysander from Rhizone’s hands, carrying her in a bridal carry.

After looking carefully, Rhizone exclaimed, “It’s poisonous!”

Lysander suddenly felt the arms around her tighten.

mosquito repellant over there. I don’t know if it works, but give it a shot.”

“Shh!”

Rhizone pressed his finger to his lips, signaling her to keep quiet. Then he crouched down, swiftly picking up the centipede that had crawled onto the mat through the crack in the bricks.

The centipede was roughly half the length of a palm, its body gleaming darkly under the moonlight, appearing ominously venomous.

Lysander couldn’t care less about being surprised by Rhizone’s strength, urgently saying, “Quick, throw it away. Make sure you don’t get bitten!”

This kid is really quite bold.

Holding the centipede, Rhizone stood up, explaining without a hint of fear, “I’m fine. The village elder taught me how to catch centipedes. As long as you hold it below its head like this, it can’t possibly bite you. However, grabbing its tail is dangerous as it can curl up and bite you.”

The centipede squirmed desperately in his hand, its countless legs writhing in an exceptionally unsettling manner. Yet, all its efforts were in vain, for escape wasn’t an option.

Only then did Josiah notice that Rhizone’s way of holding the centipede was unique, a sign of rich experience. He reassured in a gentle voice, “Don’t worry, Rhizone’s method of catching centipedes is

correct.”

Lysander asked doubtfully, “You can catch centipedes?”

“Catching all kinds of bugs is done like this. I’ve never caught a centipede but once caught langoustine.”

At Josiah’s mention of langoustine, Lysander’s reaction was less than favorable. She instinctively turned her face away, evidently not fond of them.

Josiah subtly shifted his body, ensuring the woman in his arms was away from the menacing centipede Rhizone held.

Having grown up in the village, Rhizone never found centipedes particularly frightening. He had always been oblivious to Lysander’s fear until Nilou came running over with a clay jar soaked with lotus flowers and seed pods.

“Rhizone, quickly get rid of that centipede, don’t scare Dr. Thorne!” Nilou instructed, spotting the issue at a glance.

Upon hearing his sister’s words, Rhizone hastily carried the centipede away from the direction of the cabin. It seemed he intended to release the insect into the wild.

Only then did Lysander slowly release her tight grip on Josiah’s arm.

Nilou glanced at their position, cheerfully holding the jar as she said, “Josiah, Dr. Thorne, you two seem to share a strong bond, just like my parents. When mice entered our house previously, my dad also held my mom like this to hide!”

Feeling a bit awkward, Lysander signaled Josiah to set her down.

Without waiting for him to crouch, she swiftly hopped out of his arms onto the ground. Original from NôvelDrama.Org.

Having removed her shoes earlier when applying medication, she only wore a pair of thin socks. Luckily, the moistureproof mat was not too cold, merely slightly cool under her feet.

Lysander couldn’t help but ask, “Did you also come to deliver things as per your mom’s instructions?”

“No.” Nilou shook her head, presenting the clay pot like a precious gift. “The blanket from Rhizone is more than enough. I remember you’re fond of the lotus and seed pods in this jar, so I brought them to accompany you, Dr. Thornc.”

The young girl was articulate and eloquent, speaking with clarity and coherence.

Josiah praised approvingly, “You’re so clever and good at business too. And your younger brother, he’s quite strong. He was even able to lift Dr. Thorne just now.”

Upon hearing that, Nilou’s smile brightened even more. “Rhizone is the strongest kid in our village. Not to mention carrying a slim girl like Dr. Thorne, even helping my dad tow a boat filled with lotus seeds and fish wouldn’t be a problem for him.”

Josiah suddenly understood something from her response.–

It turns out that Rhizone didn’t look back while crossing the bridge because he was afraid I might fall into the water. Rather, he was worried that the load I was carrying might be too heavy for me. He wanted to offer help but was too shy to say it. It seems I, as an adult, have underestimated the children here.

With these thoughts in mind, Josiah exchanged a silent glance with Lysander. They were determined to help these two children leave the village so their natural talents wouldn’t be wasted..

Upon locking eyes with him, Lysander quickly looked down to put her shoes back on. As she was still reeling from the shock and checking if a centipede was lurking beneath, the distant sound of an engine suddenly echoed.

How could a car have driven in here so late at night?

Suddenly, Lysander’s movements came to a halt. Trembling, she tied her shoelaces and stood up to look outside.

The next moment, the blinding beams of several car headlights pierced through the darkness, reflecting off the water’s surface. The intensity of the light was so strong it was almost blinding.
