The Charming Ex–Wife

Josiah’s brows furrowed tightly, almost immediately sensing something amiss. He positioned himself protectively in front of Lysander, Nilou, and Rhizone, his gaze sweeping the outside. After discerning the direction of the car lights, he said, “Quite a few cars came, all conveniently circling the waterfront. With such glaring lights, I suspect their intentions are not good.”
During his stay in the village, he had genuinely grown fond of the peaceful and leisurely lifestyle it offered. However, his sharp instinct for sensing danger hadn’t faded away,
Nilou immediately reacted and said, “Those terrible landlords must be back!”
As she spoke these words filled with righteous indignation, she calmly arranged, “Rhizone, quickly escort Dr. Thorne and Mr. Guerra back to the health center. These people are capable of anything. Even knowing they are from the city, these people might not hesitate to take action.”
“Who are these people?” Lysander asked.
Even though she still didn’t know the origins of the people outside, she could infer from the children’s words that they didn’t bear good intentions.
Nilou said indignantly, “Dad said they are powerful and influential. Even Grandpa Blaine was bullied, let alone the others. However, we can at least avoid them if we can’t confront them. Mom has always taught us the wisdom of ‘there’s always hope. Let Rhizone guide you through the shortcut. You’ll be back at the health center in no time.
Upon hearing this, Josiah suddenly recalled his stroll with Lysander the previous night. They had caught sight of the pond from the edge of the village. Without a second thought, he scooped her up mid–shoe- tying and addressed Nilou, saying, “Why don’t you come with us? It’s safer at the health center.”
Given that these individuals are bold enough to do anything, there’s no guarantee this kid will be safe.
Nilou shook her head firmly. “You guys go ahead. I must go back and inform my parents and the neighbors living by the pond. We need to lay low for a while. Then we can all hide together in the village. They surely won’t chase us that far.”
After saying that, she immediately dashed out of the cabin, evidently prepared for whatever was to come.
Rhizone was even more shy than his sister. He usually didn’t have much to say unless someone initiated a conversation with him. However, his hands were now tightly clenched into fists, appearing as though he was ready to run at any given moment due to his nervousness.
Without further hesitation, Josiah only took their cell phones with him. Then, cradling Lysander in his arms, he and Rhizone took a detour around the back of the house and down a narrow path.
At such a moment, the absence of streetlights was a blessing. They didn’t have to go to great lengths to conceal themselves, merely blending into the night.
The weather was pleasant that night, with the gentle moonlight illuminating the ground. It was enough for those who had adapted to the darkness to see the path beneath their feet.
After they had walked a distance along the path by the pond, Lysander attempted to get down. “I think I should walk on my own.”

“The path here is tough,” Josiah softly told her. “My shoes are almost completely buried in the mud. When we return to the main road, I’m afraid I’ll scrape off a good few pounds of mud. You really shouldn’t ruin another pair.
As he spoke, there was a continuous squelching sound under his feet. He was genuinely walking through a muddy field. The shoes he had just cleaned that morning seemed beyond saving.
Compared to before, Rhizone up ahead was walking more steadily. He was far from matching Josiah’s height, so logically, he’d need to take two or three steps to match one of the latter’s. However, he was stepping quickly and walking briskly without even panting excessively.
Aside from being strong, this kid also has exceptional physical fitness. If he could truly escape from the village, he would certainly have the makings of a future sports champion.
Once Lysander had fully grasped the situation, she knew that with her pace, it would be difficult to keep up with the two of them. To not become a burden, she tightened her grip on Josiah’s sleeve and said, “Don’t worry. I won’t fall. You should hurry and catch up with Rhizone.”
“Okay,” Josiah replied. Even as he held her, his movements were firm and reassuring, shielding her from the chilling night wind.
The trio made their swift exit from the reed marsh.
Lysander glanced over Josiah’s shoulder toward the pond, noticing that the car lights were already too far to make out. Seizing the opportunity while they had some distance to reach the health center, she asked, “Rhizone, do you know who those people are?”
“Y–Yes. They’re big bosses from the city,” Rhizone stumbled over his words, caught off guard by their sudden question. His response was concise and to the point.
Even with Josiah’s impressive stamina, he was carrying someone while traveling. To spare him from further exertion, Lysander inquired further, “Why would they come here in the middle of the night? I heard that all the bosses who wanted to develop tourism in the village left after taking a look and never returned.”
If they were merely interested in promoting tourism, they didn’t have to show up in the middle of the night. They seem to be harboring ulterior motives. Besides, the villagers are known for their warm hospitality. If these people had no ill intentions, such vigilance against them isn’t necessary.
Lysander’s heart leaped to her throat.
To articulate his thoughts clearly, Rhizone slowed down his pace.
“This guy is different. He claimed their company had taken an interest in the pond near our front door. They wanted to build mansions in the vicinity and wanted everyone to move out. The villagers disagreed, so they kept coming to cause trouble,” he explained.
Josiah also slowed his pace before asking, “What terms did they offer to make you move out?”
“Terms?” Rhizone turned around, looking confused as if he didn’t quite understand.
Josiah assumed he was too young to comprehend the concept of relocation compensation. So, he patiently explained to him, “It’s the compensation you receive after moving out. You are the true owners of this

land. If they want to build mansions, they must pay you. Take your family’s situation, for example. If they wanted you to move out, they would have had to find you a new place to live and buy both the land and the house from you, provided you were willing to make that deal.”
He did his best to explain the complex relocation compensation in simple and understandable terms.
Rhizone shook his head disdainfully. “They didn’t say anything, only that we had a deadline to move out. Their insults were incredibly harsh.”
The kid has always been impeccably polite. The person in question must have been truly dreadful for him to make such a remark. The issue has become serious.
Lysander realized that those people were probably taking advantage of the fact that only the elderly, weak, women, and children were still in the village, with no legal awareness. They intended to seize the land through intimidation. She said indignantly, “In this day and age, they still want to take over a land by force? We should call the police.” Content from NôvelDr(a)ma.Org.
