Patrick nodded, giving his approval.

He pulled up a chair and sat down next to Sophia. “How’s she doing? Has the doctor confirmed that the surgery was successful?”

“She should be fine. The doc just said she needs to rest up after surgery.” Sophia replied, then she got up and shook Leah gently. “Leah, Leah, wake up, wake up.”

Patrick seemed confused. “Why are you disturbing her sleep?”

“The doc said so. She’s still under the effect of the anesthesia; I need to wake her up.”

“Let me help you then.” Patrick offered.

Before long, Leah slowly opened her eyes. The white ceiling was too bright, and she quickly shut them again.

Sophia heaved a sigh of relief. “Finally, you’re awake. How are you feeling?”

Leah slowly opened her eyes again, turned to look at Sophia, and asked, “Where am I? Am I dead?”

“No, you’re not. You’ve been saved. We’re at the hospital.”

Leah paused for a moment and then suddenly tried to sit up on the bed. “Where are my kids? My two kids?”

Her sudden movement pulled at her wound, causing her to turn pale from the pain and fall back onto the bed.

Sophia quickly reassured her. “Your kids are doing just fine; they’re okay. It’s you who need to take care of yourself first before you can see them.”

“Are they alright? They didn’t get hurt, did they?”

“No, they’re fine. You saved them!” Patrick chimed in. “We really owe you one.”

“They’re my kids. I’d do anything for them.” Leah replied, her head lowered. “When I rushed over to save them, did Emmett see? Is he mad at me for not telling him first?”

“Why would he be mad? You saved his son. He should be grateful!”

“But my presence has been a nuisance to him.”

“Nuisance? Your presence is a godsend. Don’t overthink it. Just focus on your recovery. I’ll have a word with him and try to get him to accept you sooner so you can be with your kids and bond with them.”

Leah’s eyes lit up at this. “You mean it? I can be with my kids?

“Absolutely! If anyone says otherwise, they’ll have to answer to me.” Sophia tucked Leah in. “Close your eyes and get some more rest. I’ll fetch the doctor to check on you. Don’t worry about anything else. I’ll have the housekeeper record more videos of the kids for you to watch. They’re not little anymore, and they remember what you’ve done for them. It’ll be easier for them to accept you when the time comes. Your injury is not in vain.”

Once both Patrick and Sophia had left the room, Leah struggled to get her cell phone from under her pillow, and after successfully obtaining it, she dialed a number. After a few rings, the call was picked up.

“Miss, are you okay? I was so worried! Dawson pissed me off! I only asked him to act, but he actually shot at you! Thank goodness he died right then, or if I ever found him, I’d make him regret it!”This content © Nôv/elDr(a)m/a.Org.

Leah coughed weakly a few times and then whispered, “I should thank him for his convincing act, The Melendez family has changed their view of me, and I think Emmett is also starting to accept me.”
