“Good evening. I’m here for Mr. Joel Asante. Is he around?” Thalassa asked the lady at the front desk of the Astoria Hotel.
She felt tense, tapping her fingers on the desk, unaware of how loud it was until a woman standing beside her hissed and shot her a glare. Flashing an apologetic smile, Thalassa quickly turned her attention back to the receptionist, who had finished checking the appointment.
“Yes, he is. And he’s expecting you. Suite 13. Take the elevator to the seventh floor, then turn left,” the receptionist replied.
“Thank you.” Thalassa nodded, turning toward the elevator, her unease growing with every step she took. Something didn’t feel right.
She had been sent to meet Joel Asante by her mother-in-law, Linda Miller. Linda had never liked Thalassa ever since she began dating her son, Kris Miller. The disdain had only grown since Kris and Thalassa got married a year ago.
So when Linda called today, asking Thalassa to deliver some documents and get them signed—if she wanted to earn Linda’s approval—Thalassa hadn’t hesitated. Perhaps if she earned Linda’s approval, Kris might start behaving like the man she had married again.
Her phone rang, breaking her train of thought. Seeing that it was her best friend, Karen Blade, she quickly answered.
“Lassa, are you really going to do what your mother-in-law asked?” Karen asked.
“Yes,” Thalassa replied. “I’m at the hotel now. But Karen… I don’t know why, but something feels off.”
Karen sighed. “Lassa, I’ve already told you, you’re overthinking. Linda just wants you to do something simple to earn her approval. Don’t make it more than it is.”
Thalassa smiled, feeling reassured. “You’re right.”
As soon as they ended the call, the elevator dinged and its doors slid open. Thalassa stepped out and turned left, just like the receptionist had instructed.
She arrived at door number 13 and pressed the doorbell. After a few moments, she was about to press it again when the door suddenly opened to reveal a half-naked man. He was wearing only blue shorts, his upper body exposed.
Thalassa grimaced slightly, her voice tense. “Mr. Joel Asante?”
“At your service.” The man flashed her a smile that was surely meant to be charming. “And you must be Thalassa Miller. Please, come in.”
Thalassa slowly stepped into the suite’s living room. The man pointed toward the couch.
“Please take a seat.”
She hesitated, wanting to remind him that she was only there for his signature, but when she remembered her mother-in-law’s warning not to annoy the man, she slowly sat down.
“What can I offer you? Champagne, wine, beer?” the man asked.
“I’d like nothing, thanks,” Thalassa answered, gritting her teeth. She just wanted him to sign the papers so she could leave. And why wasn’t he attempting to put on a shirt?
“Oh, come on. Surely, just a glass of wine won’t hurt, will it?” he insisted.
This time, Thalassa didn’t bother to hide her glare. “I’m sorry, but I’m just here so you can sign these documents.”
She pulled a folder from the handbag she’d brought along and handed it over to the man. “My mother-in-law, Linda Miller, said that you already know what the documents contain.”
